Should I use a guide?
And is the co-op any good?

>Should I use a guide?
No, the game is pretty good about telling you exactly what to do.

>Is the co-op any good?
You literally control the other party members so how good or bad the co-op is depends almost entirely on who you are playing with.

>> No.2544339

Recently started playing that for the first time with a bro.

I don't get what the hype is about

Generic story
Retarded button mappings
Horrible menu
Half the time your attacks do no damage because the enemy is still stunned from the previous attack or the attack from another party member. Yet sometimes you can attack a stunned enemy.
AI likes to get stuck

The co-op is the best part man. It was a pretty novel idea for its time.

>> No.2544363

>>2544241
No way. Why spoil something you can experience newly only once? I guess a guides ok if you're _really_ stuck, but >>2544252 is right more or less if you keep playing the game.

>>2544339
The translation sucks because of the fixed width font. It may not be the best story, but the art, music, theme, and (imo) gameplay are great. You have to time your attacks in Mana.

>>2544346
I envy you. The only time I got to coop is when I needed some help against the Vampire.

You may want to try Seiken Densetsu 3 with a fan translation. Very different flavor, but one of my favorite games.

How do I convince my gf to co-op this with me. Will she enjoy it, she is not into togs or games at all but I would like to try and play this with her. I haven't played it before but enjoy square snes games a lot.

>> No.2544737

>>2544729
does she play cutesy android or facebook games?

anyways, play the soundtrack in soundsystem and set the cover art as laptop wallpaper

No but this two patches are a must.
apply this:
http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/18/

then this:
http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1105/

also if you have sd2snes you should definite apply this:
http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2467/

to get the msu1 working!

to get all three patches working in combination. If anyone is interested here is what I did:

1. Applied a header to a original NTSC rom.
2. Applied the Variable Width Font patch (rom expanded to 3MB).
3. Applied the Proper-caser patch.
4. Removed the header.
5. Applied DarkShock's MSU1 patch.

Tested and working in BSNES 0.70 - I haven't tested against anything else.

I've been thinking about picking this back up for a while now, but I'm reluctant to play edited versions on my first real play through.... At the same time if it really makes it a better experience I might be inclined....

>> No.2544809

>>2544762
None of those patches are must at all.

>expands the story dialog.
This is rarely any good thing. It reminds me of FF6 retranslation fiasco.

>Everyone knows Secret of Mana’s menus are plagued with horrible, horrible all caps syndrome
Yeah, a hacker being full of himself. Big surprise.

>This patch adds support for CD quality audio to Secret of Mana using MSU-1 chip invented by byuu
Which is exactly against what bsnes is to begin with. This guy calls the other emulator author of inaccuracies and hacking, and yet he's doing the exact same thing behind their backs.

The game, like all Mana games, is mechanically brain-dead. There is little beyond the visuals and sound.

This is easily one of my favorite games from my childhood. I recently got a physical cart and I am so damn hyped to play this with my two girlfriends. I don't know if they'll be as into it as I am, but this game has this huge emotional resonance for me and I'm looking forward to taking the trip one more time. It's the perfect way to spend a lazy summer's afternoon.

>>2544339
Actually when the enemy is stunned after your friend hitting it and still hasn't rolled out damage numbers, if you hit it with your attack it'll add to the damage total, up to 999. You can also stack offensive magic spells this way.

You obviously never tried any of says patches and just like to shit posting
1/10 you made me respond

The co-op can be good, however, with 3 players, you get a lot more random interruptions to the flow of the game.

-I want to use this weapon
-Changed my mind, this one
-Maybe I'll use the whip in case we need to cross any gaps
-I'm going to level my magic by nuking anything that comes on screen
-Just checking how long it'll be until I level up
-Making sure I equipped the stuff we bought
And so on.

would be perfect if action didn't stop when in the menu

the fusuoya "proper caps & extended dialogue" patch just changes ONE dialogue near the end, when they find the mana tree. Plus it was not in the original japanese text, he made it up himself. It was a proof-of-concept thing he made to test out his text compression tool.

ok fair enough it's a bit more than just that one dialogue but still

co-op is great if you do it start to finish you and that person will remember it forever.

>> No.2546491

I remember near the end of the games the enemies just skyrocket in difficulty. Most of the time you have to use spells that exploit their elemental weakness just to survive.

I was around level 40 to 45 I think. I'm willing to accept the idea I was underleveled, in which case I would be surprised the game demanded more of me.

I'm a little shocked that it hasn't been remade/re-released yet. It would have been fairly easy to apply the approach in Crystal Chronicles on the Gamecube to SoM -- everyone has to stay on the same screen, but your menu is on the GBA, allowing action to continue while you changed gear or selected a spell.

Squeenix doesn't give a shit about anything that isn't Final Fantasy.
