In your opinion, what is the best startup screen for retro console or handheld?

My personal pick would be the Dreamcast's startup. Perfection.

PS1. Any different opinion is shit.

The digitized "seeegaaa" of the Genesis is nice, as is the rustic "ping" of a GameBoy.
Visually I'd have to go with the Saturn.
The Playstation had this sort of awe-inspiring, THX-in-the-theater kind of feel to it that was cool back when, but it feels kind of pretentious to me now.

Did anybody actually ever get that one PS1 startup glitch that sounded horrifying and supposedly struck fear into the hearts of children everywhere?

Not the one I was thinking of, but it'll do (close enough):

How is that audibly different than how it's supposed to be?

It's got the weird reverse glass breaking noise at the end or something.

Agreed, Dreamcast has the best startup.

>>2543473
PS1 is nice too... except most of the times it was more of an experience of being hopeful the lens would work and load the black PS screen.

would be my 2nd favorite after DC, the japanese one is great too and I like it a bit more than the american one.

Yeah I actually took the time to watch the whole video this time. I thought the last minute or two were gameplay footage.

That's pretty weird.

GameCube hands down, although the Dreamcast and PS1 are both amazing. The dissonant harmony of the GC start up screen always blows me away.

>dissonant harmony of the GC

Um, what? It's not dissonant at all. I don't think you know what dissonant means.

It's nice, but not retro.

Sega CD has the best theme song, IMO:

It's also cute how the console spends its idle time trying to impress you with its color depth and sprite scaling/rotation.

Dissonant and harmony are antonyms, anon.

I have literally never owned a PS1 and I know that it has the best startup sound. Come on guys. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=31ivdML1Xes

My favorite retro startup sound?

For a console it'd have to be the PSX, but the Sega retro consoles definitely knew what to do to show off what they could do.

Kind of lame, IMO: feels like I'm about to watch a direct-to-VHS horror movie.

The clean, crisp, and concise US version is my favourite.

It's not a startup screen if it doesn't happen every time you start the console.

>> No.2549716

More of a BIOS than a start-up I guess but the Japanese Master System intro really needs mentioning - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZQjiHKhQg0

>> No.2549865

>>2543470
That entire startup was composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto, hes in an incredible musician

also in typical MS fashion seeing this nuclear power blow up as opposed to an elegant intro was always funny but cool to me

He's done a bunch of soundtracks for games and anime, my favorite is probably Wings of Honneamise. He was a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra as well.
