Whats the best zelda game? I played all zeldas on NES 8bit and 16bit. A link to the past is the best i have played. Some say that ocarina of time is a must? Is it really cooler than link to the past?

Asking because im thinking of playing through a zelda game i didnt already do.

I kind of lean towards Ocarina. The music and graphics are so cozy. I can just get lost in the world.

Funny because I didn't like playing it at all as a kid. I hated the controls.

I thought Link to the Past was the best thing as a kid, but I honestly find it tedious today. Haven't replayed it in a decade and attempts to do so do not get very far. Same goes with Link's Awakening, which was actually the very first video game I beat.

I may be a minority here, but Zelda II was my favorite. I'll say Ocarina of Time is a close second.

Zelda II was a solid platforming experience with RPG mechanics mixed in. Not too hard, but hard enough to make it rewarding; lots of aesthetic quality with the Greco-Roman style of Hyrule; great soundtrack; some level of replayability with self-imposed challenges. (i.e. Low level runs, skipping items)

I didn't actually get to play Link to the Past until it was ported to GBA, because SNES games were too expensive back then. Although Link to the Past was pretty fun, I wouldn't put it in my top 3. Probably not even my top 5. I think the fact that I've already played so many other top-down Zelda games kind of ruined LttP for me, because I was burned out.

I also didn't think LttP had any replayability. There aren't many self-imposed challenges you can do, because the game forces you to take upgrades such as heart containers. It's impossible to do a 3-heart run without cheating somehow.

Ocarina is a bit of a chore to play, the world itself is interesting and the temples/levels feel different yet still integrated into the world, plus I like the introduction of these new civilizations.
but really I felt it fell flat on its face and wasn't very polished, things like the camera in between combat and adventuring is a huge pain and the enemy design is kind of boring as well.

LTTP has far better level design and the world itself is so tight of an experience, not to mention how fluidly you can swap between worlds. the puzzles are far better as are the bosses and personally I think the dungeons are more fun even if they are not as dramatically different looking theme wise as Ocarina ones.
if you want a 3D Zelda play Majoras Mask since it took all the ideas of Ocarina and just made them so much smoother and more interesting.

And for the OP; while I personally think LTTP is the best, you should definitely try the game boy zelda games (links awakening and oracles). They are seriously good. Especially LA. And if you haven't, definitely play OoT and Majora's Mask. They're really good too.

Whether or not OoT is better than LTTP is a matter of opinion, and you can only find out if you play the game.

Ocarina is definitely worth playing. To be honest, every Zelda besides Skyward Sword and the DS games is worth playing.

Best way I can sum up Ocarina is that it's 3D LttP with more emphasis on story and lore building. Personally I prefer it to LttP because the game is generally more atmospheric which is something I love in games. Majora is my favorite but you should play OOT first.

>>2537659
It's not really comparable to LttP, it is way more combat focused and the world feels like a hub with more linear segments on the outside compared to the more immersive world of LttP.

That and it's way more action/combat oriented compared to the older games which are heavily exploration/adventure focused.
Really I just love the mystery and openness of the LttP world, the areas have a better atmosphere to them as well as I personally prefer the music.
Don't really care so much for the Ocarina story, I preferred the simpler ones prior to it and it was pretty much a copy of the LttP story anyways

ALTTP will always be my favorite, with Link's Awakening being a very close second. Why? Zelda 3 feels like what Zelda 1 was intended to be. You have better graphics, better sound, a bit more story, more NPCs you can talk to, larger multi-floor dungeons, and a general sense of epic scale. Zelda 1 was fun and all, but like many NES games, it felt constrained by the console's limitations.

OoT was fun, but it never felt quite right to me for some reason. When I play ALTTP, I still feel like I'm embarking on an epic adventure. With OoT, I feel like I'm a passenger just along for the ride.

>> No.2538052

Depends on what you meant by best.

Zelda 1 in terms of pure exploration is really good, you really aren't limited on where you go if you are good enough.

Zelda 2 added a lot of features in a Castlevania/FF style many that are used in Zelda even now despite how much some shit on it. Still one of my favorites.

LttP really made it feel like a world and was fucking huge in terms of map for a game at the time.

Links Awakening had a great nut punch of an ending.

I was never very impressed by the 3D ones as they dumbed many things down for 3D rather than expanding on them and really took away a lot of the exploration and free roaming. Granted one of them has exploring but there isn't much to see though not retro. Not played the newer 2D ones so can't comment there.

>> No.2538193

Overall I like A Link to the Past the best. The game has a grandiose feel to it that none of the other games (save maybe the original) have. Of course if you know what you're doing you can breeze through the game within a couple hours, but still.

Link's Awakening is my second favorite. Then the original.

Not big on Ocarina of Time much. The combat in that game can be entertaining sometimes, but I think overall it's just kind of bland. The map is generally somewhat empty and the puzzles show how boring they are once you get over the novelty of 3D space. Cool atmosphere, though. I like the boss fights too despite their easiness.

The Oracle games are alright.

But of course the camera as with everything is 100% flawless and the transition from 2D to 3D was utterly perfected the first game.

And beyond that the exploration of Zelda was lost, and that was what made the first and third games so much fun.

I can't believe there is so much crapping on Ocarina of Time in this thread. lol, it's almost hipsterish.

It's a fantastic game. It does many things right. If you are playing old games you are usually not caring about the graphics anyway, and OoT's art style is still very nice to look at, despite its pointy polygons (only TP looked as "serious", and it suffered from having too many goofy-looking characters).

The main dungeons are all very fun (though the first is a little too "tutorialy"), and the game achieves a greater sense of scope than its predecessors thanks to the 3D. I love all the Zelda games (well, except the bad ones*), and OoT is more than worthy of a playthrough.
