For lack of better words, what games can you guys recommend that take place in medieval Japan? I'm guessing they aren't common

You have to take it' interpretation of "medieval" japan with a grain of salt. But one part of the game, Mother & Child rocks, looks so much like OP's pic, right down to the sunset.

How about East Asian in general? Legend of Sword and Faerie is a Taiwanese game that takes place in a fantasy-element-filled version of the Three Kingdoms period. I think it's been fan-translated into English by now.

"The leading character is a historical Japanese samurai, Taira no Kagekiyo (also known as Akushichibyōe Kagekiyo) who fell in the Battle of Dan-no-ura at the end of the Genpei War. In Genpei Tōma Den, he was resurrected and fights Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Saito Musashibo Benkei over the Imperial Regalia of Japan, as well as to defeat his enemy Minamoto no Yoritomo.

The game also features the Sanzu River, a place believed in Japanese Buddhism to separate "the current life" and "the afterlife", resembling the concept of the Underworld or Hell (The river is often identified with the river Styx in Greek mythology). Therefore, some mythological characters like Emma-o (閻魔大王; literally "Enma Dai-o"), god of the Underworld, and the Sun Goddess Amaterasu appear in the game"

came here to post this. been playing it recently. started a game a few months ago, but was kind of confused as to how the cities were laid out. then i found out there's a map screen.

fucking fun game, slowdown or not. feels like you can mercilessly beat the shit out of dudes even more than in RCR. just wish the stats were more in depth, and there more varied items in the shops like in RCR.

There's truly nothing else like the first Genpei Toumaden. Most reviews out there claim that it's ruined by the controls and the nonlinear nature of it, but once you learn to adjust to its rules, it's fucking amazing. Quite possibly Namco's magnum opus.

The sequel, while a more accessible and more polished game overall, lacks the originality and the atmosphere (not to mention the brutal difficulty) that made its predecessor so memorable.

>> No.2535891

Sword of the Samurai, it's a 1989 Sid Meier game for DOS. You play as a vassal to one of the clans and eventually aim to become Shogun and control Japan. You can either do this honorably or just get rid of your competition or, say, kidnap their family to blackmail them.
The game's like a mix of Pirates and simple wargaming, very fun.

You could go Tenchu: Stealth Assasins on the playstation.

Sometimes gets a bad rep. Early 3D, controls, camera issues.
But like a lot of those older 3D games, you had to learn to work in the limitations. Once you do it's quite an enjoyable stealth game.

ps. I'm not sure how the sequel fares.

It's too bad that the English voice acting is so goddamned atrocious. I hope they were trying to mimic the badly dubbed Hong Kong action movies of the 80s and 90s, because that's exactly what it sounds like.

Ready to go full weeaboo Op ?!

The early Goemon games.
The first game, Mr.Goemon for arcades is pretty cool and japanesey, it even fucking looks like an old japanese painting. The first 2 famicom games are still set in a somewhat "normal" feudal japan. The rest of the series is full of wacky anacronistic shit, so I don't know if that's what you are looking for or not.

There are other cool nes/famicom games too; Ikki, Legend of Kage ,Demon sword, Nazo no Murasame Jō, Yokai club and Tokaido Gojusan-tsugi.
There's also a Dragon Quest clone where you play as the son of Musashi and have to defeat Kojiro's ghost but I can't remember the name.

There's also Ninja masters for arcade and psx, and Kabuki Z for arcade.

Then there's Bushido Blade, wich doesn't really take place in feudal japan but lots of the stages and the "kill 100 ninjas" minigame could pass off as feudal japan shit, so you might want to give that one a try.

Have fun !!
