Weird, my dad bought me Rayman kinda like that on a whim.
And he never bought me games outside christmases or birthdays.

This game is hard as fuck. That level in the music world where you have to jump across the SMALLEST FUCKING PLATFORMS EVER AT LUDICROUS SPEEDS doesn't help.

Good game though.

Fuck you Rayman was fun as fuck.

>aww this game looks so colorful and fun I'm going to buy it for my son

Some relative did the exact same thing to me but for pic related...any time I think back about playing this game I want to kill myself. The only game that even comes close to how shit this game is, is BUBSY 3D.

I only played the demo and until now had forgotten this was actually a real game. It's more like a Net Yaroze demo than something worthy of a full commercial release.

I remember renting this and liking it enough to rent twice. It was hard as fuck.

You must have shit taste, OP. Rayman was one of the best 2D platformers the playstation ever saw. Its 3D sequels were all shit and too Ubisoft entirely too long to realize.

I wasn't implying that Rayman was shit. In fact it's one of my favorite games of all time. I was just implying that it was too hard for a kids game.

Oh, fair enough then. Absolutely, it's fucking brutally hard.

I think I was about 11 when I got that game, almost 13 when I beat it, and almost 16 when I 100%'d the motherfucker.

i played it around the age of 10, managed to get to the mountain levels before eventually rage quitting. time before a memory stick so all of my password codes were and still are on the back of my mums phonebook lol, went back to it at 17 and beat it, band land is too hard for an early stage and the paint levels are infuriating

Which version of Rayman would you recommend for people wanting to play it nowadays? Seems like they all have various drawbacks in terms of features and compatibility.

Saturn, though the PS1 is an acceptable alternative.

Saturn lacks the brilliant music, doesn't it?

>> No.2532836

No. There is a very slight difference in the soundtrack (they added a bit of extra drumming to some tracks on PS1, i have mixed feelings whether it makes it sound better) but otherwise identical.

At least it's recent 2D reboots were fun as fuck. Not even remotely challenging, but it's nice to have someone remind Mario Bros how to make an enjoyable platformer.

Great game. LOTS of practice required though.

Rayman Gold on PC has the most content, but the God-tier soundtrack is messed up, so you'll need a copy of the original to "hack in" the soundtrack.

Every other port on consoles or otherwise is missing levels, but the PS1 and Jaguar ports are okay looking to me (never played them).

NEVER play the other ports. They got lazy and fucked up the physics engine so the parkour parts are no fun (and they had to add platforms to make the game still beatable because they messed up the momentum that bad).

>> No.2533590

Yeah, I think I want to stay away from the Jaguar version. However it was mentioned as port, and I responded to that.
As for the DOS version, I had a bit of bad luck with DOSBox, because the game's internal benchmark messes with the CPU throttling and leads to wrong results, making the game run too fast. Kind of a shame, really. It's the version I grew up with, and would love to play again.

Not sure why >>2533528 said to stay away from the Saturn version. It seems to be kind of comparable to the PS, but better resolution? When I tried the PS version in ePSXe out of desparation over the DOS version, it just seemed akward, as if parts were missing.

I had the PC bundle with Rayman Gold. Damn that version, it combines the usual difficulty with a full completion requeriment of every level for the goal to pop up, and a few items and triggers are VERY well hidden. One level even had the gall to feature Dark Rayman at it.

And now I'm curious to see anyone more patient than me finishing that version.

Definitive version? Rayman DOS (its the only hardcore way to play)
Best sequel? Rayman 2 before they jumped the shark with Rayman 3 and raving shit turds 17.

Rayman was amazing, my Mom bought it at randomly for me when I was very young. I played the shit out of it on a keyboard and did manage to beat it eventually too. I'm glad that I was able to play that and simcity on dos when I was younger.

Funny that i noticed this thread, i tried Rayman for PSX for the first time yesterday and got my ass absolutely handed to me in that music themed stage. At first i thought the game started out really easy, but then at like stage 3 or 4 the difficulty shot way up through the roof and i couldn't progress. A shame that such an artsy and beautiful game is almost impossible to play because of the difficulty.
