Can we get a thread about classic shmups like Gradius, Darius, Star Soldier, Fantasy Zone, Aleste, etc. Most of the time I see discussions about shoot 'em ups, it's usually bullet hells and Touhou that steal the entire focus of the thread. It would be nice to talk about something like Gradius for a change. Horizontal shooters seem to get the least appreciation anymore.

I managed to clear loop 2 of the NES Gradius a few days ago. It's nowhere near as ridiculous as the loop 2 of the arcade version, but it got me a pretty nice looking score. Not quite a counterstop but

And I forgot to mention, this was a run where I died near the end of loop 1. I thought I was done but I somehow managed to claw my way back, when I was down to my last life no less.

The traditional scrolling shmups are my favorite kind, followed by the manic shooters, and then the static/fixed shooters, and then the on-rails Space Harrier variety. Arena shooters would be second or third if you want to count those. Regardless though, there's not nearly enough appreciation for the classic style anymore. Gradius, 194X, Parodius, and Aleste are equal or better than any bullet curtain series. Star Soldier as well once it moved to the TG-16.

I sure like it, it's really fun with friends. It's one of our three best two players games, along with Windjammers and Puyo Puyo.

The saturn version is the best one, if you haven't tried it yet, because the arrange version has a few extra characters, and an exra disc full of fan artwork (sometimes pretty bad but hey, they were likely teenagers).

Super Alestate/Space Mega Force is a pet game of mine.

Its arguable one of the ugliest shmups ever made and feels like it was still in the beta stages of graphics.

The weapon system is pretty impressive. 10 Different weapons with at least 2 different firing modes for each. The enemies also drop power ups a ton so you can just fuck around and switch weapons every 10 seconds. They are actually surprisingly well balanced.

It's a very claustrophobic shmup and there's destructible environments on almost every single screen (minus the one open space level).

Pretty good music too

Love this game. I think it gets overshadowed by other Aleste titles way too much, particularly MUSHA. Now, whilst MUSHA is a better game imo Super Aleste has great merit of its own and stands out a mile on the shmup starved SNES, equalled only by Axelay and R-Type III probably.

Can't say I agree about the graphics. It's certainly very plain but "one of the ugliest shmups ever made"? I dunno, there's been some pretty fugly shmups.

That house inspired soundtrack though.

It looks like your shield still protects the entire ship, unlike the original shield. That was one of the hardest things to adjust to, going from NES to AC.

I don't think Powerstrike 2 gets enough of a mention, probably because it wasn't released in the us. It's a compile game exclusive to the Master System. I've also been playing a hack for GG Aleste 2 (also called Powerstrike 2 in the west but a different game) which makes it playable on the SMS.

Not sure that'd make much of a difference considering the SMS's dismal performance in that region. Nice to see someone mention it though. Probably my favourite shmup on that system despite the sprite flickering.

Did anyone else play the MSX1 Gradius / Nemesis trilogy? I thought the second and third installments were pretty innovative. You could add new weapons to your power-up meter by absorbing weapons from bosses you've defeated. Too bad that mechanic was never used in later sequels.

If I'm not mistaken, Gradius II / Nemesis II for the MSX1 is available on Gradius Collection for PSP. I don't think it's an emulated port, though. I believe they altered the graphics and implemented smoother scrolling. There was also a remake for Sharp X68k. (Pic related)

I wonder how many others know about this little gem. Sega decided to make a compilation of every Fantasy Zone for the PS2, minus the licensed NES / Famicom ports. (They did include a "Neo Classic" arrangement of Fantasy Zone that looks and feels similar to the Famicom version, though) Also included is a remake of Fantasy Zone II using (enhanced) System-16 hardware, which of course is emulated.

There are quite a few unlockables in this collection. I think someone over at SMS Power! documented all of them. A lot of them are hidden menu items that you have to use controller inputs to unlock.

If you can't import, this game works great with Free McBoot. It can even be loaded from a USB drive without any lag, since there aren't any FMVs anywhere.

I just discovered an arcade game called Tenkomori Shooting where you play shmup minigames with different goals (usually "shoot something X number of times" or "destroy X number of something"). It's surprisingly fun! Makes me wonder why there aren't more "minigame shooters".

Sweet, a shmup thread! I hope you guys don't tear me apart for ps1 not being retro but I've been enjoying the shit out of pic related for the last week. I've been trying to do a one credit run and it's making me pull my hair out in frustration (which isn't necessarily a bad thing) when I get up to stage five. I thought stage four was hard but fuck me stage five requires such memorization and perfect flying that I just end up starting the whole thing over so at least I can perfect the previous stages.

Still, fucking brilliant game. Last time I played it before this week was on a ps1 demo disk and I'm kicking myself for not getting it earlier.
