The game genie puts too much stress on the pin connector over time and wears out your cartridge slot to the point where it's hard to make carts keep contact and boot inconsistently. Similar to the NES front loader problems.

Replacing the pin connector is not difficult on older model units, but is becoming harder to find parts to do it. So I fully recommend removing the tabs. Just take the shell apart first if you're concerned.

You guys can argue potential cartridge slot pin stress all day, but the way I see it, as you add more components into the system, you introduce more possible points of failure that can disrupt your game, if not simply prevent you from getting the game to start up.

You know how when you sometimes hit the console by accident (or yank a controller cord,) and the game locks up because a pin momentarily lost contact? Now you have two slots where this could happen. Made even more prone to this issue since friction is the only thing holding it upright.

Illustrating what >>2523559 said. I removed the tabs with a Dremel grinding stone. Damage is fairly minimal, (though I felt I butchered this one,) effectively negligible since it's in the cartridge slot, hidden from view 95% of the time. The discoloration of the case is a more glaring concern.

It's just 2 little pieces of plastic you have to chop off.
Provided you're not too brute and don't broke the whole slot in the process, it's safe, no real component is being touched, just plastic. It won't even change anything aesthetically since what you remove is inside the cart slot.

However, I've decided not to mod mine. I've had this buddy for over 20 years, it's like I'd feel its pain if I did that.

In Vancouver everyone de-tabbed their SNES in the 90's because it was so easy to get Hong Kong market games here for cheap. When you come across systems at thrift stores there is probably a 30% chance the tabs have been removed.

And yeah, Japanese carts are cheap, and aside from RPGs and Strategy games, most of them need no enlighs (or are in English already). I vacationed in Japan this year, came back with some fun games; Yoshi's Island, Mario All Stars, Sonic Wings (Aero Fighters), couple Goemon games, all were under Y1000.

It's not gonna hurt it or make it feel pain, it's not going to damage functionality in any way, shape or form, in fact it will allow it do one more thing that it couldn't before.

It's literally a set of plastic lugs, there's no wiring or circuits that go through it. You could break them off with pliers but it would probably look better to take the entire unit apart and then carefully dremel the plugs out (maybe a bit of sanding) and completely avoid microscopic (yet existent) little fractures that would form from just snapping them. It wouldn't make a difference in the long run but I just think it'd look cleaner.

There's really no reason to feel bad about doing it. If you don't want to do it, that's on you, but if you do it, there's no actual reason to feel bad about it.

Yes, it plugs into the cart slot (I have a mini SNES). Then you pass through the video to the Super 8 to the TV.

Like the Top loader there is NES pin stripping, There is a place for a cap to be soldiered in.

Also, a pin was left non bridged to prevent certain games from playing. That can be re soldiered for 100% compatibility.

NES buttons are mapped logically, unlike the new RetroNes (or W/E it is called).

I have limited room, I am a micro-liver. I have everything neatly on one wall. I only have 2 retros left to collect, and the count will be 14, with the ability to play 19 systems.

If you can find one now, they go for a hefty price. This is the ONLY Famiclone I will use.

Just piggyback the new RAM cassette on the one already there. You can hold it in place with double sided tape - no need for glue. The power supply in the N64 is advanced enough to upgrade its speed accordingly alongside the upgraded RAM. You might want to consider overclocking the Expansion Pack in the N64 as well since this will help the console's brain to not overheat while running the upgraded cartridge. If you don't you might pop a capacitor or a resistor.

Obviously. Someone who can't afford a cheap adapter probably can't afford logic either.

You seriously think someone who's not intelligent enough to get a minimum wage or babysit or mow a lawn and buy an adapter will be "able" to accomplish such a complex task as breaking a couple tabs off?

If you're playing on Original Hardware™ it's not like the company that produced the game is getting any money, since you're buying a used copy of a game that's long out of print. If you want to use the "stealing" argument, the only moral way to play retro is to used paid emulations, like Virtual Console— but that'd be dirty emulator garbage, wouldn't it?

Roll your eyes if you wish, but the tactility of having a physical object in your hand is nice. Plus the examples shown in this thread show the surgery required is simple, quick, and results in pretty trivial damage to the hardware.

And it's not always about avoiding paying for a more expensive American release. Many games were only released in Japan.

I don't have mine readily to show, but I just did the same as the SNES. Took the system apart, and took out the plastic blocks with a Dremel.

Requires a bit more work since they're in the corners, and you will wind up with open holes. But since it's inside the slot and behind spring flaps, it's pretty much unnoticeable from the outside.
