Hi /vr/, it's been a good while (anywhere between 5-10 years) since I last played Breath of Fire 2 so I decided to give the fan-translation a go.

I am emulating it on my Phone and holy shit do I love this game. I know it ain't perfect but I can't take muh nostalgia googles off.

I remember glossing over BoFII till I played the retranslation. Such a great game, I really liked the character arcs that everyone got. I can't think of too many JRPGs on the SNES that did that. I replayed I and II earlier this year and was supposed to close off with III and IV but I can't find the motivation. I've never played IV but I've heard good things about it, even though the East Asian look to it kind of puts me off.

Are any of the BoF games not tedious? I made it through the first one with the help of gratuitous emulator speedup, and although I was into the story premise of the second one, I just could not deal with how much of a slog it was to continue very far into the game.

Your problem was playing the first one, it's not very good. I'd honestly skip the first two, and I say that as a fan of the series. 3 & 4 have all the charm of the earlier ones but are much more refined and interesting to play.

The SNES games are definitely the worst offenders. I'm a BoF fan and I don't recommend either of the SNES games to anyone unless they like the later iterations.

Breath of Fire 3 is good, but the story is pretty slow. Breath of Fire 4 is faster paced. Breath of Fire 3 has the best dragon mechanics and best master system, but Breath of Fire 4 has spell combos and you can switch party members mid battle. Which game is actually better is debatable and mostly comes down to preference. Both have great music, but I think 4 might have the edge. Some people dislike 4's artstyle, but I like it.

Basically what I'm trying to get at is that the SNES games aren't good, but the PSX ones are. 4 is a bit faster paced, so I probably recommend that, though I don't think there is a clear winner between the two

Breath of Fire 5 is the least tedious and probably the most fun for someone who isn't really "into" BoF. You do have to play it a certain way though. It's an exploration game sorta, where you make what is essentially one "scouting" trip, then you reload your save and do it for real. Repeat until you go deep enough.

Breath of Fire 2 is designed around fishing/hunting in the beginning. Don't blame the game for enforcing money farm by fighting at the start - it does not. Rather blame yourself for not thinking of another ways. There is absolutely no money problem far into the game since there is a huge monster island which can be abused easily and excessively.

They went and crammed fifty pounds of symbolism (not just Buddhist, even though you're playing as a giant scaly Buddha with laser beams) into a ten-pound bag, I swear. You could point at damn near anything that isn't just a tree or somesuch (and even then), and it would have some kind of meaning.

3 and 4 disappointed me a lot after 2. actually a lot of other rpg disappointed me after 2. nearly every character was great, even non playable ones (torubo is cool as fuck) the story was subtle and the "bad" ending was perfect. though i agree some dungeons must be boring and frustrating for today's standards

I found that I enjoyed the first BoF game a lot more after learning what items had a "Use" feature -- like the E. Key dealing 30 damage to all targets -- and discovering that I could pick up a couple solid items after Karn joined by revisiting ... what was it called again? Agua? Aqua? Either way, you can grab the Tri-Rang and some other nice stuff pretty early.

Didn't help the overall pace of the game, but did help put the team in a better position in some of the mid-game battles.

Also, remember, NPCs will never offer to sell you a stack of the full-recovery "Cure" items when playing shopkeeper; it's actually a stack of standard healing herbs.

The year is 1994. being the 9-year-old shit I was, I loved video games. I still do, but that's a long progression that I won't get into here; it's irrelevant to the point.

Video rental stores were still a big thing. You'd go out a Friday evening with the family, look around at VHS tapes in clear plastic cases that went over the standard cardboard paper sleeve, and take a gamble on what would be good to stay in for an evening with.

Now, if you're like me, you usually forewent the movies and went straight for the racks with the games. Or the cartoons, in some cases. But the games, goodly gods alive, the games.

From the greats such as Donkey Kong Country and Super Metroid, to shit-piles like Rex Ronan: Experimental Surgeon, you had a plethora of things to waste your weekend with.

Breath of Fire II is one of the ones that, at the unripened age of 9, instilled a sense of fear, longing, loneliness, despair, sadness, joy, indignation, and finally determination in a latch-key child's heart and mind.

In the end, it remains a constant reminder that people should never forget the necessary values of friendship, love, freedom, and family.
