Not only did you make it grayscale but you actually converted to a 256 bit palette, impressed. Glad you went the lossless approach, I was expecting some JPEG files absolutely destroyed by mspaint. These are some pretty good raw files, I don't think you actually need scanning. The only real problem is a couple of pages that have the images too close to the center and messed up by the fold, but that would probably look worst in a scanner unless you destroyed the goddamn book.

This Anon ( >>2519939 ) here, alright I'm done with page 1. Asking for some feedback.

Since it's the first time I'm actually doing something like this, I'd like to know if I'm overburning this too much. I'm kinda upping the brightness and contrast to try and remove the ghosting from the previous pages, wonder if it's alright or overkill. Also I'm slightly stretching it horizontally (just a little bit) for it to fit an A4 page ratio.

Also I'm uploading this as JPEG just for the sake of the filesize fitting 4chan's limits, no worries I'm actually saving it all in PNG.

Turn of the 1990s was a golden age for Japanese-made Western-influenced fantasy. Light novels using the genre were popular (Weathering Continent, GDLeen), Record of Lodoss War popularized role-playing sessions when the D&D version's transcript was serialized in Comptiq (leading to Sword World), Slayers and Bastard!! (not to forget Ruin Explorers) slammed action and comedy together in response, and video games post-Dragon Quest got a lot of mileage from this fantasy boom. More than a few J-PC games carried on like this until Windows 95 hit, mainly those from Glodia and System Soft.

Popful Mail feels like a distillation of ideas Falcom had used in their previous games (dungeon crawling, multiple environments, and ease of play from Sorcerian and Drasle Family, plus comedic touches from Legend of Heroes and bosses/music inspired by Ys III).

>>2520340
OVA culture definitely skewed more towards /m/-grade premises, but the fantasy boom definitely coasted alongside that. The bubble economy allowed for hyper-detailed OVAs and PC games to happen in the first place, first for mecha and then with styles of fantasy. Fujimi Fantasia Bunko formed in 1988 because of the demand for more adult-oriented sci-fi and fantasy LNs, and probably because authors were more interested and wanted outlets like FFB to get it all published. I was at first surprised by how long it took for this fantasy boom to fade in LN and J-PC culture, but it makes sense when you think about how intertwined the fantasy boom is with both of them (mainly the latter).

I look at stuff like Sword World and Emerald Dragon as indicators of how much investment and interest certain Japanese markets had in fantasy leisure/entertainment during the boom. You had (and still have) companies like Studio Nue springing up to work across mediums on ambitious projects like Macross and Guin Saga because that was seen as trendy and smart business.

>>2520392
Like with all decades, the decade previous to the current one always spills over and climaxes stylistically around the middle, like how the U.S. '50s (post-war happy times, Camelot, Blue Note jazz, "exotic" typography, &c.) lingered until around the Vietnam War's start.

I know that feel. I sometimes post on /a/, but it's irritating to deal with people who only care if the series caters to their dick or dickheart that pretends to be a heart but is actually just a way of saying moe that gives them an erection through feels. And then they have the gall to say that those shows have "personality", but those shows have just as much personality as the person watching them, which is naturally zero. Fucking christ. Yeah, I remember that there was a company who used to do english anime releases back in the mid 90s (in Europe). They released a ton of stuff on VHS - Gigolo, 3x3 eyes, Crying Freeman, Battle Angel Alita, Akira, Urotsokudoji (however you spell that), just from the top of my head. I used to read about their synopsis all the time in magazines.

I have no idea if the company was UK or US based though. I'm thinking UK but I don't even remember the company name. They could be just for imported US stuff, not actually european.

Also the french had shit tons of old anime. DB, DBZ, Candy Candy, Sailor Moon, etc., all aired in the early 90s and most even had their own theme songs.

Outlanders is mostly manga though. All of the authors stuff is manga, with only the occasional OVA for the most popular ones like Outlanders. The only exception was Rai, which was a kind of medieval japan star wars - that one got a full anime series.

I wish that one would get a translation... the setting is interesting, the art is good, and there's lots of fanservice too.

Are you manually correcting each page with different levels? When I scan stuff, I usually do rotation for all pages, then cropping for all pages, then I set up a good filter chain that cleans up pages well and batch run it on all the pages. That way I get the same quality results on every page, and if there is any issue about the colours being off somewhere, then that was the problem of the original printing and remains preserved as well. (I use different settings for inlays and covers which are printed differently as well)

I haven't seen the raws for this so I dunno how much per-page work you'd need, however. I only do that for the covers and sometimes dust removal, if the scan is quality enough to warrant it.

Yeah I'm doing it individually and I'm not just setting levels. I go in and do some brush work to clean up a lot of stuff that the levels aren't able to. And since scanning-anon didn't really scan them and took pictures, each picture looks slightly different, from lighting to different angles, and slightly different distances (making certain pages look bigger/smaller). Ah yes, quite right. I scan everything in a way so you can filter them in batch, saves a lot of time. I also put an opaque black paper behind the page I'm scanning, it prevents the page behind from bleeding over 99% of the time (instead the entire black paper will bleed over, but you can correct that in batch).

I do it specifically that way because I suck at manual fixing and absolutely hate doing it, hahaha. You are doing a better job at that than I ever could be bothered to.

One thing I noticed. Since the overall contrast of the page means that you have predominantly grey lines, perhaps it would be better to use a font colour that is not completely black.

It would stand out less from the rest of the drawings that way.

This took me a while to pin down, I kept thinking that the font looks odd only because of the resolution difference, but I think the font colour causes it more.

If you want a tip, instead of using a rectangle to erase the moonrunes, instead use a soft pencil brush (as in not totally flat, but instead a little diluted) and paint the text area white. Note for the translator, the playboy bunny is Rami-chan (蘭未ちゃん), and the other girl is one of the seven gods of good fortune, a servant of Dr. Pon, uuuh, and I don't think her name was ever officially romanized. In particular the first one. 気分屋
(きぶんや) means moody person according to the dictionary but I don't really see how it fits into her demanding extra payment. At first I thought it was some word related to prostitution (追加料金 is, sort of, in the context of e.g. a soapland for the "services", apart from the fee to enter the bath), but the dictionary says it's just "moody person".

I'm thinking of going with something along the lines "Well, I'm a moody person so please pay extra expenses now and then".

Regarding that 2-page spread, I think it would be better to just not join it. Too much stuff is missing for that to be possible without re-drawing portions of the image.

Also, in the e-hentai gallery that was linked up above, you can find the same spread with less missing graphics. If you REALLY want to join the images, you'd be better of using that as a source. A lot of stuff is more visible on that, like another sweat drop for example.

We should talk about /vr/ hentai in an environment that's less autistic - anyone have any suggestions?

>> No.2528938

>>2528927
Let's just keep it here, but on the down low. Keep it to one thread. Doesn't have to be hentai exclusive either, not all doujinshi are hentai.

An alternative would of course be to not have a thread for a while until the autists calm down.

>> No.2528939

I don't really care about hentai, I just like Popful Mail and thought that doujin looked cute, that's why I made an effort to clean it up. I don't particularly have an interest for the spank material, it wasn't even boner inducing to be honest, I just felt nostalgic over the art style.

I'd encourage people to share comics they have, but I'm not going out of my way to ask for them to be specifically hentai, I'd rather they not be it, to be perfectly honest.

Some of it would probably be /e/ material as well, but not all of it. They normally aren't ones for discussion though, because everyone's too busy fapping.
