I was thinking of buying the Mega Man Legends games. They got bad reviews when I was a kid so I never wanted them but people on the internet seem to love them. Are they really that good?

>> No.2517490

There is literally nothing bad about them.

>buying the Mega Man Legends

I seriously recommend you emulate first, they can be rather pricy. The Misadventure of Tron Bonne is over $200 last time I checked, and the actual Legends games aren't much cheaper.

>> No.2517505

They got bad reviews? More evidence that games journalism was never good.

Yes, they're great OP.

Misadventures of Tron Bonne is cheap on PSN

Remind me again why Legends and Legends 2 aren't on PSN?

Legal issues. The rights to the dub are up in the air due to the studio responsible going belly up, as well as the rights for the product placement in the games having expired. Capcom can't remove or edit any of it either because Sony's godawful policies don't allow changes to be made to Playstation Classics releases.

The PSP Collection is on the PSN.

It's just the product placement, which isn't in TMoTB.

The PSP games are available separately, and only through the Japanese Playstation Store since they never released them internationally. So it's useless for anyone that doesn't speak Japanese.

Like the mentions of Capcom games?

no there's signs and shit in the background

Rival schools is having the same issue. Why Capcom just doesn't airbrush them out is beyond me. I understand not wanting to edit the games but Id rather lose a stupid add in the background than lose the game to the ages

Real world products?
Should I start up a new game to keep an eye out for them?

They're great games. They got bad reviews because "journalists" couldn't look past the fact that they strayed far from the original Mega Man formula. Theoretically Mega Man didn't even need to be in the title, but they were designed as games in the series from the beginning and did a great job translating the gameplay from 2D to 3D.

>> No.2518438

>>2518401
They literally can't edit them out. Sony's fucking retarded policy for PSN releases won't allow for edits to the game's code so they can't edit anything out without having to release it as a full port at a higher price point.

pseudo cel-shaded effect and realtime cutscenes were great, the whole thing had this comfy sort of charm, like a clever kids cartoon.

controls were pretty crappy, the camera was dumber than a bag of hammers, lots of super-twisty textures on the ps1 version.

definitely play it, i loved it, but it has some irksome things to it.

I loved them as a kid.

Don't expect it to be anything like Mega Man Classic or X. The main games play like third person shooters with very limited platforming elements, some ability customization, and a certain degree of exploration. Pretty fun bosses, good enemy variety. The Tron Bonne game has more playstyles.

The big selling point, IMO, is the atmosphere. If you enjoy lighthearted 90s adventure anime, you'll probably like this. If not, you probably won't. Has bright, colourful backgrounds and NPCs who are fun to talk to. Highlights in various games include Mega Man's family, a pirate family that evokes Team Rocket, a vain bounty hunter, a slightly alien precursor race, and an incompetent but persistent policewoman.

Also a bit of an /m/ side to it with a focus on airships, ancient machinery, and big pirate battle vehicles, if you're into that. There are some cool sea/air battles, but it mostly revolves around underground treasure hunting.

>> No.2518620

>>2518616
There's also the neato treasure hunting vibe. The dungeon designs aren't so varied, but you get a real sense of exploration. Like you're really raiding some ancient ruins for long lost treasures like high tech Indiana Jones.

It's just a very pixelated Japanese drink on the vending machines and the game design school in Uptown being a real world school from Osaka, complete with the girl out front wearing the school's mascot on her shirt.

Ironically these issues were taken out of Megaman 64 so Capcom could release that any time they please.

why do they have to "renew" contracts to rerelease old games, the contract was fulfilled when the game was developed, any later releases shouldn't matter to the contract, or the the need for renewing the contract should just expire and it becomes a non issue

it wasn't just journalists, the game got the same treatment that Chrono Cross did from fans. People were angry it wasn't the original. Being so far removed from that now, more people
appreciate it.

Yeah, it's pretty easy to forget that Legends was only the third Megaman series, it was the trailblazer, the one that made the way for every new spin-off for the next decade. We're beyond used to it nowadays, with stuff like Battle Network, Starforce, Zero, and ZX broadening the Megaman franchise, but at the time Classic and X were the status quo and fans really weren't expecting or open to a 3D adventure game that was Megaman in name only.

>> No.2520718

>>2520710
>We're beyond used to it nowadays
We're used to trash is what you mean.

Because 9/10 spin offs are trash. Just money grabs.

>> No.2520747

>>2520710
Megaman ZX actually feels like a Megaman game though. Classic > X > Zero > ZX feels like a natural progression of the same series across multiple generations.

Megaman Legends is good, but it really should have just been a unique IP.

>> No.2520838

How well do they emulate anyway? I've heard mixed comments on Legends emuatability.
