Did anyone tried out the VR machines that were available in some regions during the mid '90s.

I remember playing a sort of FPS-like game where you use the headset to view and a handheld controller that you used to move and shoot. Does anyone remember the name of the game.

It's probably the exact game he's playing, Dactyl Nightmare. It's the only one I can think of that did this sort of setup

I remember an article on this exact thing waaay back in an old magazine, can't say which one. But man, did I want to experience that badly. So-called VR was such a big buzzword in the early 90s, maybe people can understand why the Virtual Boy seemed like a good idea at the time. You have to remember films like Lawnmower Man, Brainscan, Minds Eye, and stuff like Battletech -- this was the coolest shit in the world.

I remember that, and in the end it all turned into a punchline. That's why I can't take the Occulus Rift seriously now.

>>2516597
eh, there were a lot of reasons it turned into a punchline in the early 90s
hell, remember that consumer grade 3D cards weren't a thing until 1995

also, display technology sucked, things like the original Game Boy and Game Gear displays seemed like good ideas back then even though they ghosted like a motherfucker
so any headset sized screen that wasn't super-expensive cutting edge tech for '93 was pretty much the least suitable thing for VR

Not sure just how much better the current crop of devices will fare, but it'll certainly work much better than say, this:

Doom? Doom!?

I ended up much preferring Quake2.

In fact, my Q2 directory was over a gig. Did anyone have a Doom directory over a gig? And I do mean back in the day.

Even if I was intensely copying stuff from the two add on CDs I had gotten for Doom, it still wouldn't have grown past a gig, due to the severe overlap.

Oh, I'm sorry, I was a bit busy trying my hand at mapping to hoard as much. And getting stuck in a much more deeply soul sucking "virtual reality" than Q2. Nyah!

Definitely the superior spinoff. Dood looks like demons laughing at awkward conjoined twins.
