the main thing about arcades that bothers me is button layout

obviously it's easy to make a decent button layout for a specific game or even game system. however - I'm looking for a controller layout that can be used for all big gaming systems (emulation arcade).

mostly:

nes, snes, n64, gb, gbc, gba, sms, smd, sg, dc, ps1, ps2

of course I could put a huge amount of sticks/buttons in there - but that would only confuse people.

is there some decent trade-off ?

yes, I want an arcade to (mostly) emulate consoles

what's the problem here?

of course some games aren't really great on such a setup (jrpg's for example) but a lot of other games are - like platformers or most action games.

I've also build an arcade before - see work in progress pic
(sold that one)

I plan to make one with a proper CRT soon - and my main problem is the control layout

Unfortunate to tell you that there isn't a single control setup that can satisfy every game, only one that can satisfy MOST games and that's your standard 6 or 8 button with a stick that's commonly used. That picture seems to be the most ideal for a majority of games.

Best bet is to check Craigslist often. A lot of times you will get lucky and catch one up that you didn't see a day before. College kids get arcade cabs then realize that its fucking heavy and they don't want to move it when they're lease is up.

Alright, I've been trying to come up with my own layout since I've never been too happy with what's come out. This design follows the human hand to make even complex controller designs easy to manipulate on a board. I took inspiration from woodwind instruments and how they're set up.

Buttons are 32mm with the smaller ones at 16mm. Let me know what you think.

nice idea - but that thumb row is simply confusing to most people.
that layout would be awesome for a personal controller though

I'm perfectly ok with not being able to play every system well - many games don't even use all buttons their system offers.

I think I have to actually try out different configs by setting up a controller board in some easy to work with material.

>>2516770
Well having Mace wouldn't prevent him from having the other games on there too, but that's an arcade game so I'd go for the MAME version first. The N64 has very few fighting games that aren't arcade games and the only ones worth playing are Fighter's Destiny, Smash Brothers and Rakuga Kids

>> No.2516804

>Well I don't know about racing games, you can't really play those on a stick can you? Smash Brothers on a cab does sound like fun though.

funniliy enough I've tried smash bros on that cab I posted earlier. it doesn't really work.
smash bros is a very different game, compared to traditional arcade fighting games (like street fighter and so on)
you can of course play it and have a good time - it's just harder to play

racing games with sticks are totally fine though. had a great time playing mario kart 64 on that thing with a buddy. you have to use the stick in the same way you play racing games on keyboard. it's a lot better though, since the stick is more comfortable and tactile

an analog stick would be optimal though - sadly that's pretty hard to set up. pretty much the only option would be an ultrastik 360, which I don't really like since it lacks the tactile feedback of digital sticks

Since this is a custom build you could easily build a wrist rest instead. Personally I like playing cabs standing up and since I'm around 6 feet tall I can't easily rest my wrist on the table top anyway. But yes, you could easily cut out all the thumb buttons and add another row for the index finger to reach for.

>>2516506
Anon said he wanted to be able to play them on it so I made a layout that would work with anything, arcade or console. If you could print out a picture and test it with that I would love even more feedback.

Practically any N64 game would work on a cab with this layout, as long as the stick has sensitivity. You could even add a buttoned D-pad next to the stick if you wanted more options. I could see changing the layout for certain games too, like for Goldeneye moving the C buttons to index and middle with A and B on the ring finger.

>>2516750
I'm not sure what's confusing about it. You rest your thumb on the second button and it can reach to its left once or right twice. It follows piano thumb technique where you reach it under your palm without having to move the rest of your fingers from playing position. It would take some getting used to, sure, and a wrist rest would help a lot too, but it opens up so many options.

Depending on where you live, there may be used cabinets being sold by owner/operators, check yellow page (online and off) listing for Coin Operated Lease/Sales & Service. Other than that, craigslist and ebay -- sellers usually only want buyers to pick them up locally, but sometimes ship (which is fuck expensive). Arcade cabinets are just one of those things you have to be on the lookout for, especially when looking for a specific game. Something important to note is that if you buy almost any cab made after 1985 it will be easily swapped out with another JAMMA compatible game, which may be the fastest way to get the game you want, as boards are cheaper and much easier to ship.

Oh whoops, replied without seeing your NAOMI, same comment applies though. Might actually be easier finding one of those, although I imagine they're in the upper hundreds.

Anyone know of any arcades in the D/FW area with a good retro variety? Non of that barcade garbage.

Man Japanese arcades look so much better than American arcades it's annoying.

I spent a day in Akihabara as part of a Navy deployment a few years ago, and had no idea the Japanese had a universal cabinet design. Went into what I think was Club Sega and wondered why two whole floors were a single arcade game.

Still, spending 5 hours on the full-cockpit Gundam sim was worth it, but today I feel like an idiot.
