Recently got a DMG-01 in decent shape, but the screen cover is scratched and i wouldn't mind swapping out the gray shell and saving it for a diy mod. That said, I'm completely new to DMG maintenance/modification/refurbishing it's unproven territory because the last time I owned a DMG it was my 5th birthday present.

Maintenance/Refurbishing/Modding General

Fun fact. If you want concave a b buttons on your DMG you can swap in the a b buttons from an nes controller

>Fuck this queef in a can. There's tons of good online resources and youtube vids on repairing maintaining the Game Boy. All better than any advice you could get here.

Just remember: These things are common as fuck. If you ding something, getting a replacement will not break you. Welcome to the adventure.

those buttons are great, but isn't the paint job a bit too radical?

I mean, aren't there official red game boys out there?

It is, I just got an urge to and happened to have red paint, was going to go over it with gold in a famicom homage but was to afraid of fucking it up.

but why

I'm sorry to tell you man, but it doesn't look good. With non manufactured colors I would at least understood.

But this only ruined it. I hope at least it was a normal gray shell

In any case it's now too late to re-paint it, see how the first coat of paint already made it bulkier? Another coat would totally ruin it, to not to consider the fact that you might need more than one hand of paint to completely cover a bright color like red

>Made it bulkier
I'm holding it and it didn’t but I'm pleased with the paintjob, besides if I ever do want to use a different color I could just soak it in some simple Green.

Speaking of handhelds, how hard is it to replace the protective screen on a sega nomad? apparently it's just stuck on, just want to know if anyone here has experience.

Looks cool, and thank you for the encouragement. If you want to do a gold custom job you might consider what I'm thinking of trying and apply it to your idea. Or not, either's cool.

I'm getting a red Play It Loud! shell and lcd cover, tbh I like the design better than the classic version because it doesn't have the pin striping. I found custom injection molded buttons here;

http://store.kitsch-bent.com/product/custom-buttons

For 2.00, I'm planning on getting orange NES A B replacements. The plan from there is to custom paint Samus shooting down in a dynamic pose, with maybe a Zoomer if it's not too busy. Maybe swap the lcd out for a black lit b & w instead of green.

The Play It Loud! red is for a base, and then I'd be painting over it. I'm using the orange NES' as Samus' shoulder pods and using the red background instead of red where applicable. I definitely get what >>2508905 is on about saying another coat would be bulkier. It's an even coat, but you can see chipping around the screen cover like it got scuffed or you pried the cover from the outside. But the most important thing is you're satisfied.
>>2508895
I'm finding that to be the case and thanks, it's exciting to be able to find another way to enjoy retro.
>>2508943
Not really, I've never even held a nomad.

but simple green exists too!

What the hell man, if you have to customize a gameboy at least make it of a color that wasn't sold in stores, otherwise it will always have the "chinese ripoff" feeling

Like I said I had planned on doing a famicom paintjob with gold paint but didn't want to fuck it up worse. I had even painted the buttons black until I realized it was going to look like ass the more I messed with it so I removed the black.

Use painters tape if you're worried about clean lines. Then you're safe to paint.

One day you fools will exhaust the supply of DMG and the prices will go right up.

Jokes on you though, my stock Famitsu Game Boy Light looks 100x better than anything you could produce with a DMG.

Also the only worthwhile mod is to install a white backlight kit. Don't put NES buttons in, that's terrible.

maintaining circuit boards/chips/lcd/speakers are the the only items I'd be concerned about. And doing so is a given.

>Famitsu Light
I really don't care about that, if I wanted to do better than the DMG-01 I'd just buy a damned SP the thing is the pinnacle of Gameboy handhelds, back lit, rechargeable battery, and clamshell design preventing scratches from even thinking of happening with comparability with the entire Gameboy line with the best aspect ratio for the job.

>giving a damn if a man likes concave over convex

Modifying/refurbishing and Maintaining these things is so much more satisfying than pretending the value in having something is what you spent on it. OOH my how special you probably do not have a limited run gameboy marketed in Japan. Having a specially painted/sculpted/modded DMG you personalized with your own hands that doesn't exist anywhere else and won't go anywhere else means more to me. If being miserly is your intent.

It's like you want to be made to look stupid. If the DMG wsa perfect 2/3 of the thread premise modification/customization imply that it's not, but ugly brick that it is I still love it. Not unlike your mom, despite looking bulky and having a kind of ugly face the DMG is not without it's charm.

>> No.2512702

Not him but I actually hate my SP, buttons feel nice but the damn thing is uncomfortable to hold and the backlight tints the screen wierd. I'd rather use one of those Lamp attachment things with a color or DMG.
