Who else here finds the NES Mario games to be difficult? I just can't get the hang of the weighty platforming physics. I can't control Mario's momentum well.

I actually find Super Ghouls and Ghosts on Snes to be easier. How to git gud at NES Mario?

Save states are only gonna fuck up his flow except maybe to continue at the beginning of the level not the world. To truly enjoy it to its max you gotta fly through it. Studying level maps would for sure help though.

Why do you need a manual? It's not difficult to understand, it's just difficult to time your movement and avoid enemies

Keep playing. Just keep playing over and over. I think it is harder as an adult to have this patience since we have less time for games and don't remember when we'd play the same stages over and over as kids in order to get better.

I don't know what guides could really help with directly beyond finding warp zones and hidden blocks. Some games can benefit from seeing how someone else maneuvers through a certain part, but the first Mario is fairly straightforward. Just keep playing and if you get stuck, find someone playing that particular part on YouTube. You can call it cheating, I guess, but in the end you still have to perform the maneuvers yourself. If just watching someone play a game for ideas were truly cheating, then 1CCing a shmup would be a meaningless achievement since everyone who had access to YouTube could pull it off in a day.

Some Super Mario Bros tips, especially if you're bad at the game:
>don't use the shortcut in 1-1, because you'll miss the opportunity at better power-ups and a 1up mushroom that's hiding in a block just after a push before the first bottomless pit
>in 1-2 there's a 1 up mushroom on the very last ceiling tile above this set of floating bricks, you can follow it to a gap and catch it or get lucky and break the bricks so it drops down immediately
>4-2 has 2 warp zones, there's one in a similar location to the one in 1-2, but it only goes to world 5, but there's another near the beginning of the stage after the first set of orange platforms accessible through a beanstalk that goes to 6,7, and 8
>8-2 is the hardest stage in the game, but there's a 1up somewhere near the beginning that you should always try to snag so that you can keep repeating it.
>beware of Hammer Bros

I really don't get this "SMB is hard" meme. I thought people were trolling because until a couple months ago I've never heard anyone say that. Is this something a Youtube show covered recently? Except for a stray hammer thrown at you, you have to basically walk into most deaths. If you get extra lives in 3-1, then there's really no worries. Hardest stage I can think of is maybe 7-2, I think? The grey one with flying fish. Castle levels are generally easier than the normal stages, hardest part is the timing of the swinging fireballs.

I understand the whole "Nintendo hard" thing, but not with SMB, not at all.

I am happy to see I am not the only person that sucks at this game.

I nearly beat the All Stars remake a few years ago however I can't beat the original. I own it on the GBC and on Virtual Console but it's impossible. You start out with only three or four lives. When you die you have to start from level 1. How am I supposed to beat it? Even with all the shortcut pipes I still die somewhere along the way. I beat 64, Sunshine, and 3D World but the original is just hard. Actually, it's not 'hard' even. It's easy however it's also easy to die

>> No.2506743

Find all the hidden 1ups, and grab as many coins as you can. You'll have around 10-12 lives to play with throughout the course of the game, assuming you don't do the shell trick, which is for weenies.

>> No.2506756

I think people who grew up with it can't seem to remember how hardcore it actually is. The game is 32 levels on a single continue with a couple of lives. It completely overshadows supposedly hard games on the NES like Castlevania or Mega Man with their short stages and unlimited continues. Hell, I'll take Ghosts and Goblins over this game, I'm sick of doing the same lives collecting shit on world 1 over and over. It's a platformer where you have to grind to be safe, never a good idea.

>> No.2506776

>>2506756

you can get more than a couple lives.

I can get through smb1. the difficulty curve is well done - it starts off easy and ramps up, until it gets hardcore around worlds 7 and 8. world 8 is where I lose the most lives.

>> No.2506785

>>2506736
Once you get used to the feel of the game you can get to World 8 without warps and dying only maybe once or twice.

World 8 and parts of World 7 are the only real challenging parts of the game, I find.

You understand every 100 coins you get a 1up, right? This is on top of the 1up mushrooms all over the place. If 10 year old me could beat SMB 1, I guarantee you can do it too. I'm not even good at videogames either. SMB2 and 3 are a cake walk afterwards.

I never said they weren't "ok", I said they're cheating. I never said it's not ok to cheat, lots of games I've cheated at. But to pretend you beat a game without cheating while savestating and using a guide (lel) is ridiculous.

I doubt I will ever beat Battletoads without cheating (savestate). Savestating instead of looking for a point you can save is different of course, but I try to avoid doing that as much as I can. Looking for a point to save or getting setback is sometimes part of the experience.

I've just never been able to get the hang of ANY sidescroller Mario.
Super Mario 64 is easy enough. Metroid I can do. Zelda I can beat both quests without any deaths.
I've even beat Wario Land for the GB, but SMB confounds me.

>> No.2509442

In a way, the proper way to play the first NES Mario like a champ is really to YOLO it and play like it's Sanic. You just gotta learn to ride Mario's momentum. Don't try to control him too hard, because it's not like in Super Mario World where you have very fluid control over Mario in mid-air. You can make small adjustments after a jump, but you ought to incorporate them organically.

Obviously this gets much easier after you've played each level multiple times and you know what's ahead, but overall once you get the hang of the hold-B-and-just-gun-it style, you almost react on instinct to obstacles even if you've never encountered them before or seldomly so.

>> No.2509456

>>2509442
Oh, and this also applies to SMB3, although there you have much more mid-air control over Mario (though still not quite as much as in SMW), and you have the Leaf, which obviously makes some things easier. Overall, it's very satisfying to be able to just tear through stages by mastering Mario's momentum. It's also the reason I don't like SMW as much these days (though obviously it's still an excellent game), as that game gives you way too much control of Mario while toning down the feeling of gathering momentum.
