This. Blackface was pretty common in Japanese shit a few decades ago for some reason. Even as recently as Pokemon with Jynx which they had to change to purple not too long ago. It's obviously done with no malice intent, but it's definitely blackface.

SMB2, all the improvements done on the way to NA make it an overall better experience, so much that, as many anons have mentioned, it made japan release it again on JP. Kind of the same that happened with Dobutsu no Mori and Animal Crossing for Game Cube years later.

Hmmm... hard to say. I like the idea of saving in YKDDP and requiring you to clear the game with all characters in order to win. Some of the changes made for SMUSA were kinda questionable, namely the red grass magically turning black when pulled from the ground, and replacing the magic lantern with a potion (which I guess was meant to counter the mystical Arab thing going on in the original, but they still kept the flying carpet), using a mushroom for both life increase and for stacking blocks is certainly a questionable choice in my book, and the changing of mask exits to bird heads makes absolutely no sense at all.

Been a while since I played both to do more comparisons, but for good changes the original slots background in YKDDP was worse to the point that it looked unfinished, the slowed down waterfalls was a good idea, and I like some of the things done with the Mario characters (namely Luigi's kicking to go along with his floaty jump and Peach's floating being presumably linked to her dress or something). Can't really comment on the music since I'd need to compare more beyond the few seconds I just spent re-listening to a a bit of two SMUSA songs.

I am a bit biased toward YKDDP since I found the game's existence to be so fascinating when I was a kid. Also, I think one reason that Japan got Mario USA in addition to YKDDP is the fact that the former is on a more durable cart instead of on a disk that ran on a system expansion that was had by only a subset of Famicom owners. They did the same thing with Zelda, and I'd imagine it was a lot easier to just make small tweaks to SMB2 and put it on a Famicom cart PCB than it was to fully convert YKDDP to cartridge format.
