Nope, no can do. Let's talk about the Saturn.

My cousin had one before. Used to play VF2, Virtua Cop, and Daytona USA. I want to buy one, but seems like a hassle to get good picture quality on an HDTV.

I bought a Japanese copy of Dracula X for it to add to my collection cause I love SOTN. No console, but I use SSF emulator to play it

Been playing Marika: World of Truth. It's kind of like the later Tengai Makyo games; it looks like a PCE game but with animated battles and full screen portraits during dialogue. Full voice acting, which is done well although you can't skip any. It's fairly straightforward and seems like it won't be a long playthrough. Main reason I'm playing is because the setting is great, it's modern day with some sci-fi/cyberpunk themes. Recommend for fans of older SMT, Persona 1, or offbeat JRPGs.

Radiant Silvergun is easily one of the best games for the Saturn, and probably one of the best shmups ever.

Also, if you haven't played Panzer Dragoon Saga, it's worth snagging a copy. It's a fantastic RPG, but it's rare as fuck, so you'll have to pirate it unless you're rich.

Incidentally, bought a Saturn last week to set it up at a friend's place (while staying for a while in the US).

Results:
- PseudoSaturn is working great for most games, I'd definitely recommend it. Current downside is that is takes up the cartridge slot, so that part is meh. Also some worthy games don't boot (Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Saga).
- Composite sucks (as always), and this shows especially when playing Bomberman w/ ten people. S-Video gives a decent pictures, even on a HDTV.

Games are a hit or miss among the audience here (we had a party a tried a few). There's usually no middle ground, people love it or hate it.

I recently picked up a Japanese Saturn while I was at Anime North last month. I grabbed a copy of Panzer Dragoon while I was there, and over the past few weeks I snagged Guardian Heroes and Space Harrier (w/ obi) for a fraction of what I'd expect to pay for American copies of those games. Right now I'm waiting on a copy of After Burner II and a 3D pad to show up in the mail for me.

I'm glad I picked up an Action Replay cart so I can back-up my save data and expand the RAM for when I get some fighting games, plus it's handy to have a cheat device kicking around. Does this thing unlock the region on a Japanese console? Or does that only work on US models?

Sakura Taisen is happening, just slowly like all translations. The thing with these is there's no one tool or method that works with all games, it just depends on how the game's script is stored. The translation isn't the difficult part, you need a dedicated hacker/programmer who can make tables, redo pointers, figure out DTE or other compression, maybe create a variable width font and routine, bypass error checksums, etc; all of that needs to happen over a long period of time.

A long weekend, maybe an entire week if you explore thoroughly. It isn't very big unfortunately, even though it is 4 discs long. However what is there is incredibly detailed, full 3D, and with voice acting. It holds up very well too, even today.

It's definitely one of those games you should play - too expensive in my opinion, but remember that you can still sell it.

In the PS2/digital releases of this game, why do the Saturn graphics look like shit? >All the levels run at full speed for me with only occasional slowdown, the only exception being the boat turret part in Mission 6. That shit really crawls. The port is actually pretty faithful to the real deal.

The boat part on the last level was indeed nonstop slow, but the rest of the game slowed to a crawl after having 4-5 people on screen as well. Which meant that the entire game was running at half speed, except for the first few seconds of the first level.

You may have been running it on an emulator to not get any slowdown. SSF actually emulates a Saturn much faster than it normally is. Games that should slow down will run at full speed. Like the boss explosions in Radiant Silvergun, which are too fast as well.
On a real Saturn, the game slow downs nonstop.

The initial batches of Outrun hanged up at the start on units that had the 68k combined with the SCSP into a single chip. It only ran fine in units that used a discrete 68k, due to the TAS instruction being buggy in that (same bug as why Genesis 3 does not run Gargoyles).

However they also released a later batch that had the bug fixed and runs on all Saturns. Space Harrier also had the same problem.

Your options are either getting the later version of Outrun (that runs on all Saturns), or getting a Saturn made before 1997 (USA Saturns made in 1997 or later use the single ASIC that hangs up).

Model ones were all made in 1994 and 1995 so you are good to go.

Here's a video running on the real hardware:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jepmKNpEd8E

You can see the game slow down a ton on the first level already when you get in the slug and the helicopter appears. It's slow as hell for the rest of the stage. And that's just the first stage.

All the other stages have moments when they get very choppy. Plus you have parts where the backgrounds are out of sync (they scroll 1 frame after everything else scrolls), and a lot of missing animation frames (knifing, shotgun blast, etc). And all the sound effects sound muffled like some SNES game.

Metal Slug 1 on the Saturn is a very sloppy port. It's still an awesome game, but compared to the Neogeo original, it is a significant downgrade. If you've played the arcade original enough times to 1cc it, you'll immediately notice the problems in the Saturn version.

I am replaying it during these days and it's really good, probably my favourite 3d action game for the saturn.
The only real critics I can move are the random drop system, which makes the first levels harder then they need to be since you can make a perfect run and ending up without ammo, and those hateful long jumps/hovering across lava pits with a d-pad, but maybe that's just me being a casual.

Sokyugourentai was always a bit underrated and overshadowed. I think it was re-released at some point so it was fairly cheap, or at least it used to be. Whats nice is after playing for an hour a second option menu opens up and you can either increase difficultly to bullet hell levels, or tone down enemy bullet speed and give your ship so many bombs and extra lives that even a novice would have fun playing it.

Strikers 1945 is another decent starter. Actually it was those four Psikyo games that first got me into importing saturn shooters.

If you want "the best" as your first, the goat saturn shooter imo is Battle Garegga... Only caveat is on the Saturn you really have to play it on a largish CRT rotated 90° for Tate mode with at least an S-Video, or superior, cable to truly appreciate it. Some of the enemy bullets and shrapnel when they explode are just too difficult to pick up without a good clear picture.

Nah, other than Sonic 2 having some slowdown on Jam, the ports are great, Sonic 1 adds the spindash and playing Sanic with the saturn pad feels great. Also time attack modes.

50 dollaridoos for it is a bit high but I guess that's the norm for US Saturn games these days.

>Sonic 2 having some slowdown on Jam

Sonic 2 had some slowdown on the Megadrive too, not sure if it slows down at the same parts though.

Sonic Jam port has its share of problems though: the audio is lower quality, and the music transitions (when getting the speed shoes) are fucked. That was such a unique effect on the Megadrive, and they botched it in Sonic Jam by having the audio re-start (it starts playing a different, pre-sped-up recording).

They don't even have an excuse to not just speed up the tracks since they were playing 22khz ADPCM recordings for the music.

I'd like to get into buying some Saturn stuff as I think it was an interesting console but the games are just insanely expensive for some reason. These days with the CAD being so shit against the USD it makes it even more difficult to source games on eBay and the like.

Can anyone recommend some cheap quality Saturn content? I'd like to get some of the games I played as a kid such as Bug and Bug Too as well as Panzer Dragoon (screw Saga its way too expensive) and Batman Forever though I know the latter is like $100 on its own.

The Saturn was a flop, and a lot of stuff was underprinted due to low demand, so now practically everything good on the console is rare and expensive. Which is a damn shame.

Oftentime Japanese imports are more affordable, though this can vary depending. Shmups are very popular on the Saturn (and Dreamcast), so they tend to demand a premium, kinda like snes RPGs over here, but a lot of other stuff is relatively affordable.

and probably some more I forgot.

Also, there is regular Saturn Bomberman that can do up to 10 players, and Saturn Bomberman Fight!! which is japanese only, isometric with polygon graphics, 4-player only, but a lot crazier and allows for much free-er movement. You basically beat the shit out of each other in small arenas, jumping over obstacles and on each others heads, etc.

Vatlva also has multiplayer, it has lots of cars in a small arena shooting at each other. Never played it in multi, but it can't be too bad.

I want to see if my Saturn is still able to read discs, but sadly only have a Stunner and no games to test at the moment. The Internal Clock screen has me blocked at the moment, and I'm trying to avoid buying a game+controller until I know the thing even still reads.
I've read that the Saturn is technically compatible with Genesis/MegaDrive controllers(mostly based on game).
Does anyone know if this support carries over into the Saturn's menus and if it would hypothetically be possible to connect the controller internally to navigate the menus and try playing a music CD or something along those lines?

I'm aware how stupid and unnecessary all of this sounds, I just want to know if it could work.

If you get different results, then it is because the cart slot doesn't make proper contact.

Of course it could also be cause the card itself is flaky. But I haven't seen a ram expansion card yet where the DRAM gave up. The cart slot is more likely to cause the problem.
