Remove that spurious 'I' and you're right on the money

>> No.2504180

I've barely played anything past IV, but I really enjoyed III for the different race / class combinations. That alone gives the game a ton of replayability. If I'm not mistaken, later games have NPCs forced into specific class roles, although you do get to choose the class of your main character.

Oddly, I also enjoyed Runes of Virtue a lot. It can make a bad impression at first, but it quickly gets addictive.

>> No.2504229

4 is one of the best to start with. Most of the later games build strongly upon its foundation.
It had some ground breaking ideas even when the execution was held back by technology and the programmers' ability.

>>2504180
The race is pretty determined by your class. You'll want Clerics to be Bobbits and Wizards to be Fuzzies etc.
The class selection nominally offers a lot of variety but ultimately Paladins are better than Fighters and thievery classes are made superfluous by a cleric.

You're class in 4 is determined by the gipsy test and you can recruit one characters of every other class.
From 5-7 (including SE and MD) you're class is set as Avatar and you have a free choice of companions though their classes are largely irrelevant. SI has fixed NPCs coming and going.
The two Underworld games and 9 use the classes from 4 to determine you starting abilities.

I know everyone hates it, but I have a soft spot for UItima 8, as it was my first cRPG and I didn't have a connection to the previous games. While the jumping puzzles were shit, I do feel the game has some merit though, as the atmosphere and lore was fantastic. The graphics were also great for its time, and didn't suffer from the warped perspective of the previous titles.
Later played the U7 games, and while I love them for their story and world building, the gameplay aspects was awkward as shit. Fighting usually just turned into a massive clusterfuck.
Funny seeing a game satirizing Scientology back in the early 90s, though.

Savage Empire was always my favourite alongside Underworld.

Dunno if they're considered "real" Ultima games though.

The graphics and particular the animations are good. The lore itself was interesting but the game was so rushed that only a fraction of it really came through. Originally Pagan was supposed to be the homeworld of the guardian but during the development it was downgraded to a conquered world, something that had already been used in Underworld 2.
It could have been good with a few more months to flesh out the plot and world and work a more sensible gameplay.

Can't say I disagree. Too bad the expansion never came out, despite being finished. It would have fleshed out the world quite a bit, based on what I've read.
A lot of my my favorite games seem to have ended up like this. They're decent games, but were rushed out the door and had tons of features cut. X-Com Apocalypse is a prime example.

didnt even know Ultima had that many games. I grew up on Ultima online and it will forever be my favorite game.

I wonder if EA really deleted and destroyed everything aside from that one box.
The whole thing seems weird to me. Does the act of publishing really cost so much money that low sales would result in a loss? Aside from a single release they could have included it on CD releases like the Ultima Collection.

Underworld hands down, if you count it as an Ultima game; it isn't part of the roman numeral series. If not Underworld, then V. I am biased however, V was my first Ultima and I've sunk more time into V than any other. Fuck, now I want to play it. This board is dick cancer.

Also, there's a hack of the NES version of Exodus called 'A New Exodus', and honestly, I'd say it's good enough to make you never wanna play the original again, but that's me,

I don't understand why it's based on that version. There should be better options available.

Here it is, by the way: http://jeffludwig.com/ultima3/download.php

Probably because the NES version was the one that was most horribly broken. If you knew what you were doing, the optimal team was three Wizards and a Cleric (for opening chests).

>> No.2510091

>>2510081
That's not a reason to mod it. There's little reason to play that version nowadays. As far as I know the game system itself was identical to the other versions. The mentioned issues definitely applied.

>>2510091
I dunno, then. The only other answer I can think of is that Ludemeister's just more experienced with patching NES games than anything else. I'm really not someone to ask about that kind of thing, I know jack shit about messing with games.

He also made mods for the IBM games like Might and Magic and Wizardry.

Welp. Got nothing then.

I prefer the NES version myself, if only for the soundtrack, and the better sprites.

The original soundtrack is something I'm missing on the NES (and Towns). The sprites look ugly to me with that weird red and stuff. How can they be better than the VGA tiles?

I was talking about III, those tiles are from IV (if the filename is to be believed). I've seen III and IV in action, though I haven't played III on my computer (played the NES hack on it, Exodus was the first game I remember playing on my regular Nintendo) I also really liked the mechanic in the NES version of not being able to see around corners and such, which adds a sense of depth to a lot of the exploration (although it does make Ambrosia hard as fuck to figure out if you don't have a map).

Relatedly, some fanart of the NES Paladin having kicked pirate ass.

You can use the tiles in 3 as well. Line of sight was present in the computer versions.
