Is this game any good? It was made by the mastermind behind Doom and Quake.

Fixed.

It's alright. It's also not retro.

Unless you want to talk about the N64 version, then it is retro and completely garbage.

I dunno, Romero also designed some of the better levels in Doom and Quake.

as far as I can tell though, Romero let his prior success get to his head, and he made the really decision to switch engines mid development instead of further development on the engine he had

he also massively underestimated how long things would take with his brand new studio full of newbies, so schedule slip was a constant

No. If you want more games like Quake and Doom I would recommend playing the BUILD games (Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior, etc.) or Unreal if you haven't already. Avoid Daikatana.

It sucks. It's playable if you turn off the sidekicks, though.

>>2501413
Yeah, Romero fucked up without Carmack to keep him in check.

However, Ion Storm's other games, Deus Ex and Anachronox were really good, so Ion Storm wasn't as much of failure as people say.

Ion Storm was completely consumed by the black hole of suck that John Romero generated with Daikatana. The entire proceeds of all their other games went directly to it; it quite honestly put all of its eggs in one basket.

No to mention Ion Storm itself was Eidos' last-ditch lifeline to stave off their financial woes and was partly founded by Romero, so you can indirectly blame him for Looking Glass Studios getting shut down, too.

Don't be fooled by these losers, DAIKATANA is a FPS designed for expert FPS players. Only the best of the best can see the truth and appreciate the work put behind it.

What. Like what. I would never compare Daikatana to those games. Game Journalism is a total joke. To get access and be on the devs good side, they hype up any upcoming games. Years later when you look at these articles they are completely ridiculous.

>> No.2503276

Well, there is time travel, pointless cyberpunk aesthetics if you squint your eyes a lot and search it though all that green, a light RPG-like progression, and annoying sidekicks. And in the end, you really want to cry and have strong emotions toward your companions. So that's entirely correct.

It's 1997, game also looks nothing like the final product, at all.

Carmack is a wizard programmer but he never cared about what makes FPS good. Romero is the one who really gets it, every time he talks about these games he mentions the level design, and he himself made the best levels of Doom and Quake. As soon as he and other designers leave Id you can see what happens with Quake 2 - incredibly bland, lifeless gameplay put on an amazing engine. The single player was there out of convention.

Carmack still doesn't get it and never will, exemplified by his "Doom is about demons and shotguns" quote.

And yeah, Romero screwed up with Daikatana. Compared to all the other things he worked on, one mistake doesn't mean shit. It's not as bad as people hype it out to be, anyway.

>> No.2503432

>>2503424
The biggest mistake Romero made with Daikatana was not making any of the levels himself.

>> No.2503541

>>2503432
I'm not sure if that could make the slightest bit of difference, there are so many things wrong with the game aside level design, and I think he's responsible of them: discovering secrets required to save, the companions and everything about them, the stupid plot and most of all those gimmicky weapons, which I think it's the biggest problem.

Unconventional weapons work in their little niche, which requires a level design tailored for them, in order to shine and be useful for something; when all the fucking weapons are unconventional (like a plasma gun whose shots can bounce and kill you or electrify water and kill you, a multibarreled shotgun that always shoots six rounds and knockbacks you, a melee AoE weapon, and a rod that summons a demon that can oneshot you if he doesn't see any enemy), you make level design a nightmare, and all you get is an unsatisfying mess that plays awfully in any case

>> No.2503576

>>2503263
Romero seems to have underestimated the whole thing badly.

So THAT'S where American McGee got the idea.

I'd feel a bit disappointed if this thread didn't at least mention the amazing feature Gamespot did years back on the making of Daikatana. Sadly, it was lost to the internet via a site redesign, but remains readable via the internet archive.

Without order you get a mess.

Romero let me pet his hair once. Native American hair is thick like a horse's but soft because humans can use conditioner.
