from Roger, commenting on a TED talke by Kellee Santiago, with examples of games
>Now she shows stills from early silent films such as George Melies' "A Voyage to the Moon" (1902), which were "equally simplistic." Obviously, I'm hopelessly handicapped because of my love of cinema, but Melies seems to me vastly more advanced than her three modern video games. He has limited technical resources, but superior artistry and imagination.

it sounds to me both Roger and Kellee mis he point entirely

he admitted to only playing Cosmology of Kyoto, some heavily technology hampered crap "visual novel", pretty much a point-and-click short book, with no real choices, so its not even a game really,

While Kellee says that once homo sapiens were able to blur out sounds and millenias past it turned into art in the form of peotry and song, bulshit, she shows some cluncky FPS and basically means that technology advancements will be able to turn games into art... like what? near indistinguishable 3D steroegraphic games played with some Flexibe LED display helmet that provides full angled vision, in a all directions threadmill and higi precision body movement detector without wearables to kill immersion... both retards

Stuff like Metal Gear satisfies the social commentary/postmodernist critique aspects of art, but those things only became a major aspect of real art around the turn of the 20th century so I don't think it's a necessary requirement.

But we gamers must admit, I think, that although our medium is capable of producing art... That doesn't mean it's going to be particularly good art.

The only stuff that comes close really is a bunch of overly pretentious indie games, but those almost always end up being shitty games in their ambition to be good art.

No it isn't, anon. Sure the music is great. Sure the design is slick. But the same can be said of a Michael Bay film, and those sure as fuck aren't art.

Because it was done by a single person or what? Just because a group comes together and creates something doesn't mean it can't be a piece of art.
Using your logic music bands can't produce art simply because they are not solo artists.

The music, the presentation. Seamless stage transitions. Damn near everything about it is a work of art. Even on a gameplay level, it has an interesting, advanced scoring system that rivals those found in more recent shmups.

Fighting in PSO2 is much better though. It's clunky as fuck in PSO1.
Sure, you can make a moeblob bitch in PSO2, but who gives a shit? The actual meat of the game is legitimately better.

Sonic Adventure is also pretty shit, and I'm saying this as a longtime Sega fan.
it did impress the shit out of me in '98 though, so it does deserve credit where it's due

But even the Sonic levels are generally poorly designed in SA1 (and that's something I noticed back then -- Windy Valley, Sky Deck, there's more but I'm hitting char limit). Rest of the game doesn't fare much better. We're not even touching on the camera, the hilariously awful glitches (I've fallen through the ground in Speed Highway more times than I care to remember), Big, Amy, Gamma, etc.
SA2 almost fixes everything wrong with SA1, except it has it's own whole ream of bullshit and problems

JSR is standout. Controls are a bit iffy, but it's definitely one of those games that showed how great Sega was. Fantastic look, music, and gameplay.

I still need to play through Shenmue -- I have a save sitting on my DC where I'm at the very first moment I could save so that when I did get around to playing it, I could just get going right then and there

man, it really was just Sonic Team that fucked up in that 1998-2003 period, rest of Sega never stopped being ace as fuck

Ok, so art techniques are a technology. Just like guns or types of medicine they have to be invented or discovered, depending on your terminology. All of the western examples share the same level of advancement in art technology in the same way those countries shared around the same level of cannon technology.

To show a succession of European art form a similar era is beyond inane, especially when comparing them to a singular Asian country. Chinese art of the same era was certainly different, but it shared the same general level of technological progression as the Japanese piece.

Also if your trying to turn this into some European supremacy post, please just don't, there's no point to them. I you really have to at least read some history book like "Guns, germs and steel" beforehand so that we can actually have a conversation beyond "Europe conquered huge amounts of the world! Ignore all the times an Asiatic culture accomplished a similar same thing."

>All this "Are games art"
It's not that difficult people.
Art is a work created with the intention of arousing emotion (Particular or in General) from the person experiencing it.

Roger Ebert's parallels to Chess and Mahjong are therefore ill placed as games that are created for competition or idle mental titillation are not the same games that are being referenced when gamers talk about games being "Art"

The games that ARE reference, (Ico, Braid, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, etc..) are created for the sole purpose of elicitation emotion of the player and are thus, art. No less than books or movies, and no closer to arcade and competitive games than Classical is to idle tapping noises.

>Art is a work created with the intention of arousing emotion (Particular or in General) from the person experiencing it.

Nope.

Art doesn't need to illicit emotion to be art.

If I paint a mediocre painting that absolutely no one cares about or has a reaction to, guess what? It's art.

I HATE seeing all the stupid rationale over what is/isn't art that I keep reading: "It has to cause an emotional reaction; it has to be beautiful; it has to be this; it has to do that."

No.

Good art is art; bad art is art; beautiful art is art; ugly art is art; art is art is art is art. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it not-art suddenly.

A pizza is a pizza regardless of how it tastes. Art is art regardless of how you feel.

And I also hate when people trot out "These games are art" lists that are ultimately No True Scotsmans.

We should just get rid of the word "art" it's a useless word.

And with that one sentence, probably without realising it, this Anon has expressed more about the meaning of contemporary art than the rest of the thread combined.

So you agree that video games are art by definition but you think people shouldn't call them that because you falsely associate the word "art" with the word "masterpiece" even though there is tons of awful art.

Where did you learn to read? Fucking hell.

The last six words of your post apply to 99% of videogames, that's my point, and that this thread contains laughably bad tastes.

Again, since you can't fucking read, I will spell out how subjectivity is important here. S-U-B-J-E-C-T-I-V-I-T-Y, there.

It's just hilarious watching you chucklefucks making all these grand pseudo-intellectual arguments about something I can guarantee you know precisely dick shit about.

If it's subjective why do you bother attacking other people's subjective interpretations and opinions about art with childish insults?

That bitch asked Ebert to decide if games are art or not and showed him fucking Flower and Braid

shit, if I had no idea about video games and you showed me Flower and Braid, I wouldn't think they were art either
