2497273 No.2497273 [Reply] [Original]

Just bought pic related and want to scan it for the benefit of the collective.
However, the booklet has been bound in a way that all pages are snapped tightly to the spine, so simply pushing the spread against the scanner glass will give shitty results and show more distortion towards the edge.
I could disbind the book, scan the pages individually and get better results, but in the end I would have perfect scans but a broken book. I have never rebound a book, but it seems plausible.

Does anyone have any hints? I'm leaning towards the disbinding method but I'd really appreciate it if you had any pointers.

Oh my, an APE SMW guide book.

OP, please scan it, I've been wanting to see further contents of that book since a long time ago, only manage to get a few scans of it.

Unfortunately I have no idea how to make it without disbinding it, but be sure that if you do it, that'd be the first time that book is scanend and uploaded to the internet, at least as far as I know, so you will make history.

I did the hair drier debinding method on some doujins once to scan them. Didn't go perfectly ( a couple small tears here and there resulted), but I'll chalk that up to my inexperience. Even if you unbind it you probably won't get perfect scans. There will be bits of adhesive that won't come off or remove print when they do. Title: Luigi’s thoughts (of something, I can’t read that last kanji)

Panel 1-
Red kanji: Luck
Book reads: Mario World
Turtle is labelled “turtle”
Luigi: It’s always my big brother who’s the main character in these game strategy guids.

Panel 2-
Red kanji- Rice field
Luigi: my penis is bigger.

Panel 3-
Red kanji: War
Turtle: uhhh…

Panel 4-
Red kanji: Car
Luigi: Question, Turtle? My penis is bigger.

-

I probably am missing something, in the last panel there’s a comma which wasn’t there in the second panel, so something may be different with how it should be translated but I’m not that good.

All together the red kanji reads ‘yoshi da tank’, is it some joke about calling Yoshi a tank? Who knows, I’ve really messed this up. Hopefully a better anon than me can read it better.

Re-binding adhesive-bound softcovers is possible, there are machines that can bind a couple of paper together into a book. Though I have never personally used them and I don't think they could re-do any spine artwork.

If you want to do a perfect scan of that, you'll have to unbind it. Book scanners like the one posted above are not good for books that use adhesive binding. They are only useful for ones that can open up properly, and adhesive ones cannot do that because the adhesive will "break", and permanently lose form.

If you are not willing to take a bullet for the team and destroy your book for the collective good, then your only choice is either using a flatbed scanner with some huge weight put on top to flatten the book, or one of those book scanners which put less stress on the binding (but can be expensive compared to a vanilla flatbed).

Also if the books have artwork so much into the inside edges, then you may have small parts of missing artwork even with those (or with de-binding), since there is usually artwork up to the very edge of the paper.

Luigi: Even though my dick is bigger...

Wow, that's great stuff.

Is that resized though? Normally I scan at 2x larger resolution and resize for the final scans, so I don't lose detail due to the necessary processing (rotation, cropping, etc).
I mean it's not like a lot of detail is lost, especially if your scanner does a good job from the start, but I go overkill on quality (and my scanner is not THAT good).

I had to downscale it a lot because 4chan has some arbitrary limit on the resolution. Maximum file size is 4MB, but when I tried to upload the original it simply said "too high resolution" or something.

>>2519445
I'm aware of that –that's why I work with huge files and save the JPGs only once, as the very final product. Every step in between is done with PSDs (which are lossless obviously).

In hindsight I could've gone for a TIFF-only approach but I'm sure my computer would've blown up.

If there's demand I can probably upload the original uncropped, un-rotated, straight-from-the-scanplate images, but I doubt anyone would want those. Except maybe if you really really want to see what a Japanese child scribbled to the pages decades ago.

It's not very practical to recompress a JPG to a PNG only for it to be re-saved as JPG by a translator later on.
PNGs can also have only RGB colors, whereas JPGs support the print-friendly CMYK color mode.

I would avoid all kinds of typical Rapidshare-like services. First it will be available on my personal Dropbox as a public link, and as soon as it's approved (IF approved) it'll go to archive.org.
Even if my Dropbox dies for some reason, and/or archive.org doesn't accept it, you guys will have already archived it somewhere else, possibly even to the aforementioned file upload services.

OP here.
Speaking of vectoring, full scale vectoring is also something I really would want to try out for something, maybe the original SMW manual. Most of the official art in SMW is available in high resolution and vectoring wouldn't be too hard. Most other elements are simple text areas and screenshots of the game itself.

But I digress - regarding this project, progress is slow. I'm not dead, but because of the massive size of the workbench file (over 7 gigs) I can't work from home, and have to use my (way more powerful) computer at the office where I work at. I can visit anytime, but it's much of a chore when I'm supposed to spend time with my loved ones and my dog. I can't say when this will be done but I'll post progress reports every time I'm at the office.

Thanks again, everyone. If you have any suggestions/questions regarding the project, do ask.

You can also use an Iron. It's faster and quieter, but you gotta be more fucking careful about burning shit. Also, depending on the quality of the paper it could be see through, so make sure you got a black piece of construction paper behind it for maximum quality.

OP here.
Tomorrow my summer vacation ends so I can focus more on this, so I'm glad.

Also, the postman delivered this today. It's noticeably bigger than the SMW guide, 224 pages. It also seems much, much more professionally made - I'll post a few pics after this post.

It seems that they somehow had access to the original resources and possibly level data, the maps just seem overly accurate and flawless. They're all missing the background layer as well.
Remember, this was made by a third party in 1995, before sprite rips or emulators.

What strikes me odd is that if the team had access to the original level data from the developers, why didn't they notice the oversights Nintendo made, notably the sixth flower in 5-7 or the 21st Red Coin in 3-E?

Whatever the case, I'm not sure if I'm scanning this one next. First I've gotta finish thia SMW guide and by the time that I'm done, the second volume will probably have arrived.

They may have noticed them, but it is possible they never communicated it to Nintendo for whatever reason. It is also possible that the game was already entering cart production or had at the very least ceased active development.

Pretty standard looking Soft Bank guide, they made dozens of them. I have a couple for Megami Tensei games, they're nice but not especially interesting like art books.

Sadly, no. But I think it's still a cool enough guide to be preserved, so I'm not going to leave it on my shelf to stay indefinitely.

Progress, progress. Can someone translate this? It looks interesting, possibly an interview.

The opposite of that is having an upfacing one. Also, yeah don't use worklights and not that close. At least bounce them off the cieling some distance away. Worklights get fucking hot, hot enough to literally burn your skin from even 3 feet away, you might set the shit on fire. Unless they're LED variants or something. Standard ones are Quartz Halogen and put out crazy stupid heat.

You got a problem with dick jokes?

My soul doth tell my body that he may
Triumph in love: flesh stays no further reason
But rising at thy name doth point out thee
As his triumphant prize.

I mean Shakespeare is shit and all, but clearly it's not intended just for children.
