Do any of you know of any other games that have virtually unknown sequels that are substantially better than the original and better known game?

Bionic Commando on GB

Never played. Anyone care to explain what makes this better than the original?

It isn't. It's a good game, but worse and easier in several ways. It's "Kid Icarus Lite" or "Kid Icarus Jr". Not a bad game though. Shame Uprising pretended it didn't exist.

But it was significantly worse. The original is on a whole different level. The sequel wasn't *bad*, but it's being compared to a game that was really unique.

How about unknown sequels and prequels in general?

Anyone remember Halloween Harry/Alien Carnage for DOS?

It was actually the second game in the series with the first one being released for the Microbee System in 1985.

And then there's also the pretty unknown Windows-only sequel, Zombie Wars.

Metroid 2 IMO. Also the first Wolfenstein game is pretty forgotten nowadays.

Metal Gear, which is virtually inexistent to most of current Metal Gear fans who think the series started in Metal Gear Solid.

Mystic Towers is a pretty well known Apogee game, its prequel, Baron Baldric, on the other hand not so much.

I think it was a good idea to add it in MGS3 Subsistence (or the HD version for that matter) so people actually have a chance to play them.
I'm playing it right now and it's fun.

It's not completely unknown, but Mario Land 2 doesn't get as much attention as the first game despite being better in just about every way.

And I say this as a person who actually really likes SML 1.

Well, it doesn't really work on anything BUT Windows 3.1.
Even getting it to run on Windows 95 is a bitch.

It's not unknown, but a lot of people probably missed out on Um Jammer Lammy, since it came out between Parappa the Rapper and Parappa the Rapper 2 and didn't have the name in the title or anything. But plenty of people on /vr/ are already intimately familiar with the trilogy, while most of the gaming world remembered Parappa again for all of two weeks when the PSP port came out.
