Psone USED to be but now we have lots of options
>pSX 1.13 = easiest to set up and"just werks" . Still a few minor game specific bugs
>Psxr = Comes highly recommended still has a few bugs, requires configuration.
>ePSXe = Everyone hates this one. Probably due to its historically long development time and unreliability. 1.9 seems to work just fine for me but some games require special configuration.
>Madnafen = Games work great when you get it set up but its a pain in the ass to configure. Limited enhancement options. Retro arch uses this as its psx core.

Xebra is still actively developed and focuses on cycle accuracy. It's self-contained like pSX, so no plugin bullshit.

Why anyone would use an emulation front-end like Mednafen or RA is beyond me. They're all shit. They just appropriate third-party emulation cores and somehow fuck up their configurability by breaking or removing configuration options that otherwise worked in the emulator's native GUI. At that point, you may as well just use the official release of that emulator.

Having done a few translations of my own, I could tell you stories that would curl your toes. ROM hackers are some of the most autistic, egomaniacal individuals you will ever have the displeasure of being acquainted with. No need to take my word for it. Look at any of the numerous ROM-hacking sites that have voluntarily shut themselves down and replaced their site contents with lengthy rants about how they could no longer tolerate all the drama and infighting.

If you ever set out to produce a translation or ROM hack, take my advice and never ask anyone for help. You're better off handling the entire project by yourself. When you get ready to release it, make sure your site / host doesn't have any sort of message board, and that you don't post any contact info. Just put your patch out there and keep yourself isolated from any communication with anyone.

Mednafen's PSX core is actually developed by the Mednafen dev, it's not pulled from another emulator. It's quite good too. Mednafen hates all of my CCD+IMG+SUB images though.

RetroArch's whole appeal is portability -- if you can build RetroArch for a platform, suddenly a bunch of emulators are available for use on it. It's kind of sort of it's own self-contained OS, really.

Oh, and shaders, but fuck that noise.

Xebra's neat. Its disc image support sucks, though -- ended up just using a disc mounter last time I bothered.

pSX's internal sync is pretty fucked AFAIK and a surprisingly large amount of games will deadlock (some of them more frequently than others, and some games work fine for ages and then deadlock and you don't know if it's because of the sync being fucked, another issue, or a bad image) or have spurious, random button presses/duplicate button presses (for example, menus in Tales of Destiny will randomly interpret a button press twice).
would be really nice if the author came back and fixed that shit
there's an alternate timing command line option that stops some deadlocks and introduces other problems (which is why it's not default)

otherwise, pSX works fine for the games it works fine with (quite a lot, check the compatibility list though) and is pretty much as get up and go as it gets

RA is wonderful. It lets me use the same CRT shader in every emulator. It makes Genesis Plus GX and mGBA usable on Windows, where the former normally wouldn't be available at all and the latter has poor video sync. It lets me use bsnes without having to worry about Higan's weird interface. It lets me use all of them with proper XInput controller support.

From a software design perspective, RA (and other multi-platform frontends) are a good thing. It shouldn't be necessary for every emulator developer to have to reinvent the wheel when it comes to audio/video rendering, controller input, shader support, etc. It's not surprising that a lot of good standalone emulators have really shitty frontends, since the devs are focusing more on the accuracy of the emulation than supporting every quirk of every shitty operating system API of every platform they intend to support. Just let RA handle that shit.

Out of the popular /vr/ TV consoles, the N64, the Saturn and the Dreamcast are the ones with noticeably poor emulation. They're all sort of in the state where the popular easy-to-emulate games are playable, but they're nowhere near accurate, and they're polluted by having most of the talent and mindshare in closed-source or single-platform (with malware in the installer) emulators.

Overclocking the SFX chip doesn't increase the frame rate; It increases the speed at which the game itself is running.

Said increase can actually make it quite difficult to even play the game at later points due to it being designed for the original, slower speed.

I think part of that is because the N64 has some pretty odd hardware and architecture, and several games abuse that to improve certain aspects.

For instance, Pokemon Snap uses a quirk in the GPU to render the photos, and so far no emulator has managed to replicate that.

50hz seems to give it a 25% boost in speed. So the "sweet spot" where you get 60fps with no speedup would probably be 40hz.

I've been looking at my options to see how feasibly I can emulate a certain system that's missing 2-player support in all currently available emulators, and I want to be able to deliver decent netplay support as well; this would make RA's rollback-based netplay ideal on paper but if it doesn't live up to that ideal for users then I'd probably want to look into other ways to satisfy this particular goal

>Mount this, bios that. I just want to download a file and let a program open it up. at least something similar to a PS1 emulatoion
Last time I tried PS1 emulation I had to first download three very specific BIOS files. Then I had to convert the roms from .ecm to .bin and find the right .cue files somewhere else, but that wasn't it. I also had to convert .ape files to .wav and then to .bin.

Perhaps I used the wrong emulator or roms but from my experience PS1 emulation is more than just "download the file and let a program open it up".
