2489141 No.2489141 [Reply] [Original]

With Armikrog getting ready to release, I dug up The Neverhood, which I've never played before, am I in for a wild ride?

Also, general Neverhood thread.

>am I in for a wild ride?
Nah, it's pretty slow paced. I found it a little dull - like a point and click game without a storyline. I know a few people who think it's excellent though, so see what you think.

Huh, I do enjoy good Point'n'click games, so I'll probably enjoy it.

>>2489159
I've heard.
Can't wait to hear it!

>> No.2489173

It's one of those point and click adventure games where you can't actually die, so you can try everything for laughs. Part simple logic puzzles and part doing the most illogical things possible to get by.

There's also a storyline, but it is mostly background because Klayman is dumb as shit and doesn't understand anything that's going on.

Also remember to jump in the hole at the bottom of the lake bed once you get to that point otherwise you'll have to backtrack half the game for no reason later.

>> No.2489187

>>2489173
Thanks!

Is there anything to see during the backtracking, or is there no reason at all not to jump?

You weren't kidding, Klayman is dumb as dirt!

Never actually played it. I had Skullmonkeys when I was a kid though. I fucking loved that game.

>> No.2490693

I adored this games world and style but even as far as adventure games are concerned it's fairly boring and slow. It's a real shame.
If Armikrog can take the good things from The Neverhood and give them a stronger narrative and better puzzles then it'll be amazing.

>> No.2490715

I say it every time..

The soundtrack is the only cd in my car.
Also, the game is pretty good without my nostalgia goggles.
10/10 with them on
Lastly, save before you jump.

Oh, don't forget to eat at least three dot things off the mushroom.

>it's fairly boring and slow

The problem is that it's padded and artificially stretched to hell and back.
The Hall of Records that is mandatory to walk through AND back, the more or less pointless wall car rides, the one-way screen transfers that require you to travel through like a quarter the game to come back, the already solved puzzles you have to redo when passing certain screens like the radio and a lot of other stuff.

That said, it and Skullmonkeys still have some of my favorite soundtracks and game worlds and the claymation is fantastic.

Also, has anyone played this?

>> No.2490789

>am I in for a wild ride?

No, the game is pretty slow paced, but the humour is great, even if a LOT of the puzzles make you feel that it's the game playing you instead of the other way. Like, some of them are pretty overcomplicated. And at least one of them is not a puzzle but a huge "fuck you" (the hall of records).

But the graphics, the music, the humour, and the awesome FMV scenes make up for all of that.

>>2489408
Well to be honest, that one part clearly has the game warning you that YOU WILL DIE.

>> No.2490865

>even if a LOT of the puzzles make you feel that it's the game playing you instead of the other way.
The worst ones are the codes that just have their answer arbitrarily written on a wall somewhere on the other side of the map.
They're not even puzzles, they're just testing your memory.

The hanging string in the nursery activating a doorway in the drained lake area was also ridiculous.

Some of the puzzles are a bit batty and overall the rooms have a kind of flash game "the answer is in this room" kind of feel, but the music and visuals rescue it. It's a wild ride imo.

>> No.2493680

Probably only point and click adventure I never looked up anything. Not because the puzzles weren't hard but because I played it with a friend and we forced ourselves to not look anything up, even though some puzzles took forever.

I fucking hate it that I look things up in point and click adventures. I know it's so fucking satisfying if you solve it even if you wasted a million hours on that one puzzle.

Same here, but I did have to look up how to get all of the bolts open in the purple cave thing (how was I supposed to know to turn off the basement light?) And the mouse puzzle was insane. I had to get a map for that one and even then it was a mindscrew.

A lot of it is revealed through the hint system. However you have to walk back to your starting house for all of that (save before you do it, then load the save after reading the hints, that will cut down your walking time).

>>2491048
We actually timed it back in the 90s, from memory it is either 1:07 minutes or 1:17, I don't fully remember.
The sound effect was the best though, they didn't just make one single long burp effect, they actually mixed together dozens of different ones including vomiting as well ON TOP of a single long burp effect.

Anyone has an animated gif of that scene? Just the looping burp.

>And the mouse puzzle was insane.

It was actually one of the smartest and easiest ones. The mouse can smell the cheese; it will ALWAYS points its head to the correct hole you need to go into.

The worst puzzle in the game was, in my opinion, the one where you had to input those ten neon light symbols in some order. That one was fucked up. Even if you KNOW what you have to do, it's boring as all hell to input all the figures.

This had to be the only game I've ever played that required pen and paper for many parts.

I've emulated a few games on EPSXE. I'm a collector though so usually don't emulate. Some games are too damn expensive to justify the price though like tales of destiny and tales of destiny 2.
