Not exactly a single sprite, but this whole stage fooled me for a long while.

For the longest time, I thought it was some kind of gates to a space ship.
Despite the name of the stage being "Tower of Arrogance", I never questioned it, I just saw the opening gates of a ship and space with stars in the background.

Then I realized that what I thought to be the ship's gates were actually buildings from a top-down vertical perspective, and that the background that I believed to be space and stars were actually street lights and cars passing by. Blew my mind.

Oh yeah, this one got me for ages too. Was absolutely forever before I realized it was on the side of a building.

one of my favorite stages too, I love the way they made the linescroll building stay convincing even as it goes up into the upper portion of the background
Capcom at the top of their game in background and general art design.

I always thought the SMB1 sprites looked a lot less friendly than the characters they represented. As a young child, men with thick mustaches scared me; most of the ones I met in real life were grouchy or stern.

A lot of confusion stems from the fact that this sprite has a bird's-eye-view perspective, unlike almost everything else on the map (like that mountain, for example). With that in mind, it's understandable that a lot of people would interpret it as a tower.

I always though Golbez's from FFIV was a lizard-man with his mouth always open like he was singing or yawning

on the same note, the Alas Draco sprite from FFVI looked like he dropped his pants and exposed himself when he put his hands over his crotch
