His reviews are pretty good, and he doesnt do skits or comedy shit. His wrestling game reviews, on the other hand, have him doing a Goldust impersonation in full make up, and are kinda cringeworthy.

YouTube probably isn't the best place to go to for this kind of thing since the level of discourse around old video games there rarely rises above "ugh I can't get up there, why can't I get up there, waht a bunch of poopy asss diarrhea," but that ClanOfTheGreyWolf channel was really cool when the dude got in depth about games (Earthbound and Dragon Quest) and talked about the hardware (NES Zapper). I'll occasionally go see if he's done any new videos but he's always just doing some boring podcast now.

I find that I enjoy all forms of gaming now that I stopped wasting my time watching youtube reviewers and forming my own opinions and playing what looks interesting that I get recommended by friends, or games I find while hunting in the wild, maybe an article every now and then.

Long and short of it is you're watching a youtube reviewer for entertainment, not to be informed. So since you're watching it to be entertained, you're probably better off just playing the games yourself because that way you actually get some kind of personal enjoyment and fulfillment of beating them instead of watching a lets play or cut footage of the ending slapped in between jump cuts of review.

I still watch a few every now and again. I'm still subbed to ProJared and Cinemassacre because while I think AVGN is tired as all hell, I like James and Mike's perspectives on film.

Not entirely true. There's a covenience and cost factor to watching videos about certain games and consoles. Not everybody has the resources to just up and buy any and every piece of hardware or software on a whim, with some being more difficult to attain than others.

That's like saying:

I agree, the guy isnt funny. But this fad of "le funny game meme review" is the only way to get views it seems. Most serious channels dont have as much subscribers and audience (lord karnage being one of the few exceptions).

If that's accepted to be true, AVGN is the opposite. CGR is overwhelmingly positive, AVGN is overwhelmingly negative. CGR covers a wider breadth, and is generally more fair, he does include criticisms with his praise, but it's usually minor.

The difference though is that AVGN is over the top comedy. Taking his opinions seriously is pretty crazy, for instance James personally enjoys Castlevania 2 but is identified with proving that the game is horrible for some reason.
It has gotten a bit stale, sure, but what do you expect after 200 or whatever episodes? I still watched and enjoyed the majority of those. Of the recent ones I feel Atari Sports and Dark Castle were his best, they had me laughing out loud.
You can definitely tell James is a bit tired of the Nerd persona and does it mainly as a crowd pleaser. Watch his Making of AVGN video where he outright says that constan swearing has become a trademark of the character so he has to do it. It's a bit unfortunate.

Anyway, I find him as one of the rare genuinely cool and interesting people of the whole YouTube personality crew, and I like hearing him in Mondays videos and other projects.

The first video review show on the Internet was The Game Room which is now Classic Game Room and they started in '99 I think.

I said before. I like the production but the two of them are charisma vacuums and quite often talk about shit they really don't know enough about and it shows.

I just know GameSack. I don't hate the show but it's certainly not good. They can't present and engage for shit and if they don't know enough about a certain topic, they should either do their homework or just not mention it at all. Or mention that they don't know enough about it.

So often they just end up feeding half-baked research or misinformation. When it's stuff they genuinely know and like, it can be alright but a lot of the time it's cringe as fuck.

I was honestly thinking that they are only using AVGN now because they need the money to produce James and Mike Mondays. I feel as though it over stood it's welcome after the second season, if you want to call it that.

As for channels I watch, I know SomeCallmeJohnny / SuperGamingBros isn't very well liked, but I do enjoy watching them play and comment on stuff. They don't do a whole lot of "lel meme" jokes unlike some other channels, and when they do let's plays, it's more organic than what a lot of people put out.

I like people who are clearly into games beyond just making reviews and I respect people who can apparently make a living doing what they love. My only complaint is his voice. Listening to a brief sampling of his voice back at the beginning in 1999, I can say his regular speaking voice is good and that I feel his over the top thing is less appealing to my ears. Some is OK for intros and stuff, but I wouldn't mind hearing him just speak normally. Maybe his voice has just naturally changed in the past 16 years.

Big scale? We knew by the budget it wasn't going to be "big scale" and looking at his track record for the other lesser known short movies he's made, it's clear that a budget can't enhance your ability to make something great.

Was there pressure? Absolutely. But he also had pressure to make a new AVGN episode all the time, which even then at the end, had a dramatic decline in quality.

You know what would have worked? Use the guitar guy and mike as your side kicks, not a random fuck wad no one is familiar with. Then use some of that budget to hire a decent love interest FOR THE NERD MIGHT I ADD. Hell, he could of hired the nostalgia chick, and utilized other youtubers to come play roles. But no, no names were hired and it was below B movie quality. The passion was there but my goodness did that movie suck. The lack of talent was clear. The movie was all over the place, the editing was just... There was no excuse for it because the pacing forced this movie into the the trash faster than it should have. Generally when the movie came out and a lot of people were talking about it, most people lost interest and realized it was an abomination within 15 minutes. Once the Cool graphic and the montage was over, the first scene kicked the snowball downhill and it could not recover.
