Have you played CT? Even though they're very loosely connected, CT does add a bit to the CC experience.

Otherwise you might as well choose either; they're both kind of "black sheep" JRPG sequels with overly ambitious story elements and game mechanics.

Dude don't listen to the haters Chrono Cross is actually a great game but the story confuses people because it's really complex. The complexity is actually a cool thing though. Play Radical Dreamers if you want a taste of what Chrono Cross would be like. You should play Radical Dreamers anyway though and then Chrono Cross.
