I like the first Megaman the best because it has the biggest challenge. The second Megaman has a great soundtrack and cool bosses, but the game is too easy. The third Megaman would be average difficulty in the series if there weren't an E tank around every corner and E tanks stayed with character on continues. You can go to the Needleman stage and get 9 E tanks quick and coast through the rest of the game.

I fucking adore 3. It brings me great sadness that Inafune practically disowned it because he thought it sucked.

The point of Megaman is to use only mega buster. Then Needleman and Shadowman become some of the most fun bosses in the entire series. Docman sucks tho cause it's impossible to megabust his ass.

I played from 1 to 6 for the first time a few months ago.

I think 4 was easily the hardest of the classic series. The robot masters did very high damage, specially if they touched you. Dive Man, Ring Man and Skull Man could be a pain in the ass even when you used their weakness weapon.

Pic related almost made me quit the game.

2 was my favorite followed closely by 3.

That was until some anon here recommended me MMIV and V for the GB. I dismissed the GB games, thinking they were just rehashes, and I was totally wrong.

MMIV significantly improves and refines a lot of shit, and MMV was it's own thing entirely. They easily surpassed 2 and 3. More people definitely need to play them.

My biggest gripe with MMIV/V is the slowdown issues they have sometimes, I'd love if the guy who did MM3 Improvement (that ROM hack that fixed the slowdown) turned his eye to those two games

Better yet if we got a colorized "DX" version of them like with Link's Awakening

Yeah, that's always bothersome. Still, the games are polished as hell.

Unfortunately, 2 and 3 get all the love for the classic series. The GB games were pretty much all thought to be just simple rehashes.

Despite how excellent IV was, it got panned by critics because it was just "more of the same", not once mentioning the improvements that make it worth playing.

And by the time V came out, everyone was gushing over Megaman X, and people thought Capcom was just continuing to beat a dead horse.

It's a real shame. At the very least, MMV is noteworthy for not having robot masters. It's a semantic difference, really, but I thought getting to fight in space was super cool, and the bosses were really creative.

Nine is fine, but no way near the best Mega Man. It doesn't really capture the real essence of the old games difficulty, instead it's designed around environmental hazards and cheap deaths, which feel hard the first time around, but when you know about them the second time, it's really easy. Too easy, actually.
It's funny how, regardless of this, most people never even fucking beat the game. Just goes to show how modern game mentalities results in people giving up if they get a game over.

Ugh, no. Just... no.

Let's get the obvious stuff out of the way: the glitches, the slowdown, the weird developer cheats left in the game. Sure, hacks have fixed all that up, but...

... the level design is still terrible. Too many big, open areas with very little interesting platforming. Most of the spots in the game requiring sliding are there just to remind you that you can slide and add nothing else to the game. I think Needle Man's stage is the most "complete" stage in the game, and even that has issues with those giant extending spikes that are clearly an invitation to use your awesome new slide ability yet are pretty much a deathtrap unless you slowly work you way between each one.

... the weapons are... eh. The Spark Shot doesn't do much except make moving enemies into static obstacles. The Magnet Missile is boring. Top Spin would actually be okay if it weren't so likely to screw you over by making you take a hit or lose all of your weapon energy. The Gemini Laser (aside from being a boring idea for a weapon from a character who splits into two) is slow and difficult to aim properly. The Hard Knuckle feels like it should be the big bruiser weapon of the game, but it's rarely useful. The only real workhorses are the Search Snake and the Needle Cannon.

... the Proto Man fights are clearly placeholders. I refuse to believe that the programmers said "Okay, he jumps back and forth and shoots with no variation to his pattern" and were okay with it.

I mean, really, if you want a solid Mega Man game, you've got to go with MM4, or even MM2 if you're willing to deal with its relatively primitive design issues. Hell, even MM7 is a more satisfying game to me than MM3. I really enjoy all of the weapons other than the Scorch Wheel, every stage has lots of memorable twists on the gameplay, and even though the Robot Masters tend to be a little easy due to weakness stuns it really makes up for it with shit like Freeze Man, Super Guts Man, and, of course, Wily.
