hey /vr/, let's have a nice cyberpunk thread. If you don't know, it's basically dystopia futures caused by advances in technology. High tech low life. Society is collapsing and crime is high Often featuring megacorporations or governments using technology to unethically make profit or control the masses. so yeah, let's talk about games that are cyberpunk or feature cyberpunk themes/tropes. pic related, I'm thinking about playing snatcher for the first time soon, I've heard it's just like blade runner.

Snatcher was just one of a few games based on BR/Philip K. Dick. Kojima himself credits Jiro Ishii's command-selection adventure Imitation City as an influence: http://www.kjp.konami.jp/gs/hideoblog/2011/11/000464.html
http://fm-7.com/museum/softhouse/datawest/330200900.html

The other two are eroge, the former being an early Koei CRPG (Do Dutch Wives Dream of Electric Eels) and the latter a proto-VN (Imitation is Not Love). All these + Snatcher are Japanese PC-based.

These threads always contain the same half dozen or so games. I wish there were more, but there's just not a lot. I bet Don Rumata could recommend some Japanese PC games.

Anyways, check out Rise Of The Dragon, a PC and Sega CD game that was also influenced by Bladerunner. Fairly medium-low difficulty compared to your average PC adventure game, but nice VGA art and a neat story.

The baldr series has a lot of steampunk. Sky is a huge homage to the genre as a whole, containing references from sci-fi works like Neuromancer, I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream, Matrix, do androids dream of electric sheep?, Ghost in the Shell, clockwork orange (nadsat) and the like. Baldr Force is also pretty damn cyberpunk, with the MC being a hacker and all that. I just thought I'd mention it because it's one of the few modern games out there which is full cyberpunk, just a shame it's NOT RETRO. Except for the first game in the series, of course, which is just standard mecha sci-fi.

Japan had a fucking super hardon for cyberpunk in the late 80's through the 90's.

It's a shame most of those games of the time are JP only.

Sex, violence, materialism, cultural obsession with celebrity, utter disregard for the value of human life, pacification of the peasant masses under rule of a corporate oligarchy. Yup, its cyberpunk.

One must fall 2097, hyperblade and speedball.

Cyberpunk doesn't just mean sci-fi, which is what those games are.

Cyberpunk does imply sci fi.

Yet people accept System Shock 2, despite it being centered around interstellar travel, pretty un-cyberpunk. Still, I avoided mentioning Cyberbots, despite it having much weaker space travel than SS2 because it featured mecha as a practical warfare workhorse and generally had a feel of different sci fi.

And FF7, is that even sci fi, rather than just fantasy?

Which version of Snatcher should I get? The PS1/Saturn one seems ideal but I don't know how relevant the graphic violence is, and apparently they censored it in those two versions.
