What Playstation JRPG should I play next? Star Ocean 2 is my favorite, I've also played and loved all the FF's and DW 7, LoM and FM 3. Is Lunar any good?

>> No.2463264

>>2463262
Lunar's okay, but not all that great.

I recommend Legend of Legaia and Grandia, for starters. Vagrant Story is good, too, but the battle system's not your normal turn-based fare.

>> No.2463276

>>2463264
Ya I had vagrant story back when it came out. I liked the battle system and the story was cool but for some reason I just never finished it. Might give it another go. Grandia looks right up my alley I'll check them both out thanks

I wasn't impressed by Lunar when I finally played it. Seemed pretty generic if you ask me, didn't see what the fuss was about. Why not give Saga Frontier (SF2 even has a similar look to LoM) or Valkyrie Profile a try?

>> No.2463318

No Wild Arms yet? for shame, OP.

>> No.2463382

Lunar was good. Very plain RPG, simple story, simple mechanics. Probably the best way to think of it is as a bedtime story RPG - something cozy and pleasant.

Star Ocean 2 was the shit, OP. Glad to hear people are still into it.

The Wild Arms series was fun, and Breath of Fire 3 and 4 were pretty good, too.

Also, Threads of Fate? Would that count?

Lunar & Lunar 2 are two of my all time favorite games. Yes, I agree that playing them now they can easily be seen as "Generic" and "Cliche", because they were made back in the early days of jrpgs and the conventions were just starting to stick, so if you go in knowing that you are basically playing games that help establish these trends, I find it to be a lot more forgivable.

On the flip side, these are the best games if you are looking for a traditional style jrpg. The characters fall a bit into anime archetypes, but there is so much heart in their personalities and in the story that you'll lkely end up falling in love with them by the end of the game. I remember when I finished Lunar 2: Eternal Blue, I was left with a bit feeling of melencholy, the same type you would feel after just finishing a great book of anime series that you found yourself pulled into wholeheartedly and knowing that your time with these characters and this world has come to an end.

If you are a fan of jRPGS and Anime, then I highly suggest checking them out. I've very rarely played a game that makes me truly feel like I'm playing a great anime series.

In fact, just typing this out makes me want to go and replay them, it's been years. If you do play them, make sure to play the PS1 versions, the "Complete" editions. There are newer remakes but they all are pretty terrible in comparison.

>you saved my life claude! you must be the warrior of light!
Later...
>oh dias, i still love you best. here's a magic sword to kill claude that little bitch with. fuck him!
All of your team gets outraged by this betrayal, supporting your indignant anger about this. At least until you actually say something to her about it.
>"rena, how could you try and orchestrate my death after i saved your life!"
>WHOA CLAUDE TOO ROUGH!
>HOW COULD YOU BE SO MEAN TO HER
>ALL SHE DID WAS TRY TO HAVE YOU KILLED
>CLAUDE, YOU CAN BE A REAL JERK SOMETIMES!

I'm with this guy. Lunar 1 & 2 are some of my favorite games of all time. I feel like Lunar is the pinacle of 90s style character design and storytelling. Playing the Sega CD version is good too, if just for the freakin intro. Legend of Legaia is also really fun.

Also agree that Lunar 1 and 2 are both fun games that are pretty easy, although Lunar 2 does have some challenges toward the end that can be a bit hard. I really enjoyed the sense of humor Working Designs incorporated in their games during the 90s. Alundra is another game published by WD that I've been meaning to replay at some point. Solid platformer with some fairly dark themes.

In all seriousness, the PS1 remakes of both Lunar games have the coziest soundtracks ever. Luna's boat song, the new intro, and all the regular soundtrack pieces are so memorable. This game is literally over rated as fuck.
I see it in every single Under-rated or Obscure gem threads, or best RPG threads.

Its horrid. It borders on unplayable. It tries to be engaging with its Addition system but the pace of everything is so fucking slow. It lacks any charm of the timed hits having any impact (like in Super Mario RPG) and tries so fucking hard to be Final Fantasy its not even funny.

The pacing of the story is slow (and its long as fuck at 4 discs too, which turns it into a slog). The Dragoon forms are cool but the magic system especially is fucking bonkers.

I can't believe people think this is a good game, or would recommend it to others. This is seriously one of the most boring, uninspired, and least engaging games I've played.

I'm a different anon, but I agree completely with that guy

Dude, I couldn't even play that game when I was a little kid. As an adult from the now-future, it's even worse. It's slow as fuck; battles take 20 seconds before they even *begin*, and then you have to trudge through a slow battle system on top of that. The translation is horrid and sometimes the only reason I know what something does is because I've played other RPGs.

It's just a bad game. I let people like what they like because we're all unique snowflakes, but Legend of Dragoon is *only* liked for nostalgia. There are games I dislike because I dislike them though I can see their appeal to others. This game, no, this game is a piece of shit and I can't understand how even one single person can like it.

I challenge you, anon. Play LoD. Get your copy or emulator or whatever, and go play it. Beat it. Trudge through the slow as shit game and get to the end of it. Then come back to /vr/ and make a LoD thread detailing your new opinions. You can even come back defeated by my challenge -- unable to finish the game. You probably will be

There's your problem, most kids your age have the attention span of a teenager with ADD/ADHD.

Regarding your 2 complains of the battles taking too long and the localization team did a crackerjack job, this is what it makes this game a piece of shit?

Challenge accepted: I've beaten it many times (including the Japanese version) and I can see that it has some flaws to it but it still doesn't make it a piece of shit game overall.

Stop playing the victim card, I'm just giving my unbiased view of it since I did my research so hear me out:

I can sympathize with your view of this game overall, it's just just a missed opportunity to "becoming a FF killer" with the hype of it having "over 100 people working on it, spanning 4 discs, and 3 years of development" during the golden age of console videos games meant something back then than it does now, the expectations were high and so were the disappointments.

Despite that however, there's a reason why this game has a cult following that makes this an underrated/obscure gem: It's not that good as fanboys tell you but it's not that bad as the pseudo critics tell you too. It was trying to be different back then and it just didn't appease everyone like the FF franchise did because it was made by Square (Enix), a company that set the foundation for console-based RPGs internationally.

I've played the (/vr/ based) FF series lately and I just don't see the appeal, I've enjoyed half of the other Square (Enix) games more than FF. That too is my preference.

tl;dr
cool story bro
