Diablo I is more of a classic roguelike/dungeon crawler, I felt like the element of randomness and exploration was far stronger than in the sequel, especially if you opt to never leave the dungeon. For that reason I find it more replayable and in general enjoyable than Diablo 2. If that is your cup of tea I say start with the first one.

For a first time player:
Save your skill points. A very common mistake people do is to start maxing out first-tier skills in the first 20 or so levels. If there are 2 good skills at level 18 and you want both (Say, Concentration Aura and Blessed Hammer) you are going to need enough saved skill points to put 1 in each for every level you gain after level 18. So in order to reach level 20 in both as soon as possible, you're going to need 20 saved up skill points by the time you hit level 18.

This will be a problem early on, but it pays off greatly once you're past Normal.

What you are looking for is called plugy and you could use d2se (it already has plugy pre-installed) to play with it and different versions of the game too. I just haven't figured out a way to get multires to work with versions 1.12a and 1.13c properly.

I have a lvl. 50 Necromancer, currently strolling through Nightmare. It's definitely the least item-dependent build, all you need is +skills and you can do your own thing with other equipment, I'm getting as much magic find as I can. Gave myself some cheap runewords for the skills and now I'm up to +5, skeletons are super tough.

I don't know how Hell will be in singleplayer, but I'll attempt it.

Also, I'm really torn on my build. I've just maxed skel. mastery and raise skelly. I feel I want to max mages next, there's nothing else that really feels worth it. Corpse Explosion is nice but I don't feel it's that necessary when I already got a good radius and the damage is constant. Maybe I'll put 5-10 points when I've done all the skellies.

It's a bit like raiding in an MMO. Except you can do it solo.

Relaying on your mercenary and off skills to kill things puts the game at such a slow pace it's more exciting to take a dump than continue playing.

Overall, it's pretty straight-forward.
20 points in Resist Cold for synergy with Holy Freeze.
20 points in Holy Freeze.
20 points in Holy Shield for a solid defensive boost.
You'll want an Act 2 Normal Offensive merc for the Blessed Aim aura -- at least to begin with; if your attack rating reaches a point where you don't need him, pick up someone you can benefit from.
Equipment is rather standard: anything with the Crushing Blow attribute is your friend (Crushflange is a good starting point, Guilliaume's Face is a decent mask later. Weapon damage won't matter much early on when Holy Freeze is dealing heavy cold damage due to the points spent in Resist Cold prior to level 18.

From there, you have some choices. If you've put 1 point in Zeal and have the above skills at 20, you've used 68 total points. Finishing off Zeal will give you a good boost to your physical damage and attack rating; adding points to Sacrifice will improve Zeal's damage as well.
You will want some way to combat cold-immune targets, so a point or two in Vengeance may be worth it, unless your merc can handle them on his own.

Because while Fanacitism is is good for offense it is unsafe because high speed, high damage enemies can zerg you and kill you before you can even react to them. Holy freeze negates that, the mass slowdown effect holy freeze is one of the safest way to play pally. The slow effect stacks with normal freeze effects like weapon cold damage and also ignores cold immunity.

I own a legit copy of Diablo 2, but the sticker got scratched off the jewel case somehow (I was a kid), so I've been using a cd key I found on google and playing single player. Will I be able to play on Battle.net if I buy a legit copy of Lord of Destruction? If not, will Blizzard give me a new cd key if I explain what happened, or do I just need to shell out $20 for the digital versions?

You're going to want something that isn't terribly gear-dependent and can overcome monster immunities rather than fleeing from monsters you can't kill.

A Skelemancer can be loaded down with a ton of cheap topaz-based MF gear and do very well without having to worry about elemental or physical resistances.

On topic, I just reinstalled this like 2 weeks ago. It's pretty amazing see a thread for it. I haven't played D2 since highschool and I just kinda put points in whatever. Never even beat Nightmare mode and never bothered looking anything up online. Like, I knew what a runeword was IN THEORY but I had no idea what any of them were or what they did.

A little homework later and my MF sorc is in Act5 Nightmare. I'm running Meteor/Frozen Orb build. Level 62. Doing pretty well.

At some point, Blizzard added a permanent ignore/filter list that will block any incoming message containing user-specified words or phrases.

Google "d2 message filter" and you should find out about it -- the second result, from Battle.net forums, has a rather useful list of items you can copy into the ignore file to block most of the incoming messages from the start.

the first two diablo games took dungeon crawling and brought it to a whole other level, in fact, it was so unique and creative that they spawned their own genre of games. With d2 they effectively created a template or formula that would be emulated throughout the next two decades, and with diablo 3 there was a certain expectation of it happening again. Sadly it wasn't the case, and although the newest expansion addresses most of the technical issues associated with the game it's still left as a disappointing void in the franchise's chapter. You can still play it and be entertained I suppose, but it won't be the same legendary experience as you had with diablo2, and no, contrary to popular belief, this has nothing to do with growing up/out of video games.

The original Diablo's single player mode is pretty much easy mode (monsters die quicker and you can save/reload if fuck up or use a bad shrine), and can be played through in a weekend. Any character can get max stats and all spells if you play for long enough, so it's hard to mess up permanently (Black Deaths and mana-reducing shrines nonwithstanding, but even then getting to end is easy enough).

Diablo 2 is designed with multiplayer more in mind and is much more populated than the original, so you might prefer that if care about a community. I haven't played 3 so I can't say anything about that.

So now that we have the option to reset out skill and stat points, it suddenly makes it worthwhile to use builds that excel in Normal mode and then just re-do everything when we hit Nightmare and beyond or get good gear. So what are some builds for each class that are good early?

These builds need to be:
1) Not dependent on items
2) Focus on skills that are available early (like level 12 the latest)

I just started a Paladin on US East Ladder and I'm going with a build focusing on Holy Fire. I've never seen anyone put more than 1 point in that skill but it's actually really good at this stage of the game.

Anyone else?

On topic, though almost anything Sorceress related is gonna be total easymode, I'd say that the easiest is a anything involving Fire for a few reasons. Ice and Lightning don't get really good until level 18 (chain lightning) or 24 (blizzard) but Fire's first great skill worth dumping points into comes at 12 with Fireball. More importantly, Fire gets that horribly OP Leaf Runeword. That shit makes you into a god in Normal mode and doesn't get replaced for a long ass time

There are some mods but you really don't need them.

You can reset your skills and stats now. That alone made the game 10x more newbie friendly since before if you put 1 point in a skill just to try it out and see if it was cool it ruined your character.

In general, just pick a skill that you think looks cool, max it out, then max out things that give it synergy. There ARE builds that are clearly better for different things, but you can always just reset your points if you feel under powered.

Also, try to prioritize Vitality over any other stat no matter what class you pick. Health is the king of defensive stats and every class needs defenses.

Figure out what the hot-key to feed your mercanary potions, get him a nice weapon and armor with the appropriate resists.

Shove potions and antidotes down his throat for 5 minutes while he kills the boss.

There is no real tactics to a summoner other than deciding which curse to use and you can't really power up by grinding since 99% of the items will NOT have +skill (literally the only stat in the game that interacts with minions).

Summoner necros basically operate strictly on gear checks. If they can't pass the check than their mercenary needs to.

When was the last time you tried? Summoned minions scale with difficulty now and by Act 1 NM you should basically have max Skeleton Mastery and Summon Skeleton, with a couple points in Summon Resist for good measure. Your little army should be walking all over enemies at that point.

Your merc, however, will probably still be a pushover and die.

I'd recommend the Torch Mod for anyone playing Diablo 1, especially if you've gotten used to a lot of the helpful features from 2 and you can resist the urge to twink the shit out of your new characters. Don't horde that many potions in your inventory, just collect them as you go, or if its bad just tp back to town. I would buy tomes of town portal and identity so you can hold 20 of each at a time while only taking up two blocks of space. Seriously you shouldn't have that many potions though. You don't get a bigger pack, that's what you got. You get a cube in act 2 which adds a little more inventory space for you, but not much.

As for resetting stats, you only get to do that once for each difficulty, normal, nightmare and hell. So don't use it unless you've really messed things up. I'd use it when you finish normal and if you think you can respec your skills better. You can also get a token to reset your skills, but you have to be in hell for that.

How not to go crazy as a Skellimancer in the Maggot's Lair in Act 2:
1. Cast Attract on the first monster you meet
2. Step back and let one of your minions (no room for more than one) take point
3. Now the monster is being attacked by both your minion and the monster behind it
4. When it is dead, wait for the other monsters to move up and use Corpse Explosion

How to build the best Skellymancer?

I find that Skeleton Mages are quite useful, when they stay on the second line and attack at a distance. Why are they hated so much?

Am I going to need bone armor when things get harder? It never really did me any good, I get hit by ranged attacks only, my skellies do a good job of taking meele attackers off my back.

Should I get beyond clay golem or is it enough?

These people might stick around until you've basically beaten the entire difficulty or just leave once you've completed the act. Normal mode Duriel rapes pretty much everyone, most notably when solo. Once you reach him in Nightmare mode, you're generally well-equipped enough to bring him down with less trouble.

Partying up with others or being a Necro and using Decrepify will make the Normal mode fight significantly easier.

As a one-point investment, Revive is alright. Raising it is a huge waste though, they're just not worth it, they disappear constantly.
It's easy enough to get +5 skills as a necro going through SP so most skills beyond skellies are debatable investments.

200k is nothing, no reason not to max out your stash.
Don't pick up everything, the stuff that sells most are armors and +skill weapons like scepters, staves and wands. You'll have a lot of money eventually though, it's not that important, but you can find cool shit I you check vendors ovassionally or even by gambling. I'm currently lvl 54 and completely maxed out on cash so gambling is the main way to spend it.

Being able to solo hell or do anything in diablo is entirely about your defensive stats, that's really the only thing that matters in deciding if you can 'win'. As long as you arn't being bursted down you can continue drinking potions and holding left click forever.

Builds in this game actually have very little variation since all classes want the same defensive stats with the same priority (minus casters who do not use life leech).

They are those maulers that use underground tentacles to to hit you at ranged.

To counter physical immunity serach out and save an item that has a chance to cast amplify damage on attack. The Amplify damage curse basically decreases the target's physical resistance by 100%, this can break the physical immunity.

Also >>2497029 has a good point, that life/mana leach is reduced on the get go by 50%-ish for melee and even more for ranged. Some enemies like skeletons and ghosts are completely immune to life/mana leech despite that you still see the game animation when you hit them. Add to that mana/life leech percentage is based on the physical damage you deal, so the two stats add together to make life/mana leech even less effective.
(Also note that physical immunity also protects against reflected damage, like thorns aura, as that is also physical damage.)

Finally monsters in Hell have colossal HP pools and regenerate insanely fast so having a "Prevents monster heal" effect somewhere also helps a ton. Just 1 hit is needed to permanently stop the natural monster regeneration (unless it died and was resurrected) but that hit must deal at least 1 damage.

last time i replayed D2, and got an editor and made a 1x1 charm for infinite stamina, didnt feel like cheating at all, its too lame wasting time walking backtrcking, making sure you explored every centimeter of the map...

then i went to try a sorceress, in the begining in normal mana is a bitch, i just didnt have time to run offscreen, wait a few secs, run back, kill kill kill, run of-screen, so i edited a mana regen small bonus charm, really worth it

also, for the 2 anon asking about skills and what not... i would say just waste skill points where you want them, just use the editor to reset skill placement qhen you reach 18..24..30 without really giving urself anything, its not cheating, youre just exploring the lower skills without the drag to replay the game over and over with variants of variants like when you were an adolescent with all the time to play VG

I'm playing my bone necro. I'm up to Mephisto. His gear is a bit shit but I realize that he's high enough level to equip a runeword I have on another character so decide to move it over to him. I switch to the other character, drop the runeword, and go to switch back. When I entered the game on the higher level character I noticed a bot or two come in at the same time but didn't think anything of it, but when I tried to re-enter the game on my necro I get "GAME IS FULL."

I tried over and over to get back into the game but it was full every time. Full of bots spamming advertisements at each other. After 5 minutes, the game disappeared along with my runeword. I had even used one of my Act5 socket quests to get that thing.

I'm so fucking mad right now.

but the thing is, i didnt cheat did i, i managed to monsterdrop every one of those chipped gems, i just saved myself the trouble of mulling to others chars, and instead just counted them mentally/paper for a few days, and saved some small time and annoyance muling

but yeah in hindsight i figured i could just have inserted lv1 and lv2 gems on whatever items, cause u always find something nicer, and more gems..

to elaborate a little more, i was initially playing inside VMware, so i could pause in the middle if a map and continue the next day, without having to reclean, or live PC on.... so i was just dropping gems on ground till i found out that items decay in single player in town

so i got the ideia to count them, and once i went thru the hasle of searching for an editor, i ended up making the stamina and mana charms for temp use.

you will want to try the fire spells, they seem stronger first but ppl just invest in eletrical spells,...

but for playing mostly alone 2 elements are better (monster that will appear ummine to one element) so its FIRE and ICE... so just go ahead and use fire for its better damage/mana, and as soon as u have freezing spells, be sure to equip an alternate nicer DMG/seconds weapon to beat ur frozen enemies while ur mana regains for 5s, freeze, beat... repeat

u get a shared stash (any other char), and several pages of stash, to store as many incomplete sets, and inpenfect gems to transmute to a level higher

Honestly? You probably should've dumped more into Resist Cold to pump the Holy Freeze synergy early on.

Still, not terrible. Maybe focus on bringing up your cold damage for a few more levels.

Right now, your Zeal (with the skill bonus included) gives you an additional 66% physical damage. Holy Freeze adds 71-80 cold damage to your attack. Ignoring extra damage from charms and equipment, you deal 41-76 damage using Zeal alone -- meaning your normal swing would strike for about 26-48 without Zeal's damage boost. So, Zeal effectively adds 15-28 while Holy Freeze gives significantly more. It's nice for the attack rating bump, but your aura and its synergy are your damage sources for now.

He's saying that you shouldn't save large charms because large charms are shit. Basically, grand charms have stats that are unique to grand charms while small charms have the best stats for their size. Of course that's not really relevant if you're just playing through the game like a normal person but it does become rather important once you start finding +ilvl 50 grand charms and you can reroll their stats in the cube and end up with skill charms and you want to serious max out your character.

zeal is the most expensive build in the game. when you go to hell you're going to realize your attacks don't hit mobs because you need a fuck ton of Attack Rating. id recommend going smiter or Hammerdin. and also Concentration would not be the attack to Max Fanaticism would. Since it gives you attack rating and attack speed.

Because I wasn't even aware of it, it has been working so well in normal I didn't even bother checking into the other auras. I played nightmare act 1 a bit and realized that Zeal+Concentration isn't gonna work very long so I changed my skill points so that I have Fanaticism as high as possible and also put few points into Holy Shield aswell. You can always Load the Merc up with runewords. Honor is decent if you find a wep with 5sockets but almost any rate will he can equip will make him at least hold his own. With the holy freeze, your fanta and zeal you can probably handle larger crowds given the ias of your skills coupled with the slow down from hf

First you need to do Anya's quest in normal and nightmare difficulty. You can get some resistances off your rings and amulets along with charms. A shield is a nice place to get resistances from as well.

If all else fails, get a standard (or superior) quality 3-socket Paladin shield with high natural +Resistances on it, and make Ancient's Pledge. It won't fully cover the deficit, but it'll cover a lot of ground.

when Blood Raven didnt challenge me at all i remembered the /players8 thing, came back and now lots of undead, still too quick to put 20 more down then empty a javelin stack on blood raven while avoiding almost all arrows with a weak sorceress still with no usable spells so far

You can get by with a pure phys build, but you'll have to rely on a second weapon that has CTC Amplify Damage to beat enemies with stone skin or physical immunity. Since you're playing zeal + fana, with a decent sheild you should be able to at least complete the game with some hurdles.

Or maybe if you get something like the Gavel of Pain that has charges with amplify damage, meaning you can cast it reliably and from a distance. If you're playing in b.net it's not at all hard to find one.

That is of course if you're not just willing to use vengence which does absurd amounts of damage. Like seriously, with some +skill items you're looking at like +200-300% damage with only a single skill point investment.

Thanks for the replies, I got valuable help from them all!

I managed to get my resistances up with various pieces of gear + runeword shied, though they're bit uneven as cold and poison are still negative. Still, I've survived more than half of the first act. I also put one point into Vengeance and I already made a good use of it against a few phys immune zombies etc. That Amplify Damage thing I need to keep in mind..

I gotta say hell has been quite intense, having to advance more carefully since those uniques can really fuck you up if you run in carelessly and get overwhelmed. Those super fast unique Vile Hunters raped me a couple of times for example. So much good times ahead when I try to pull my char through the game solo.
