I beat Quest of Ki this morning! Huzzah. The game is pretty ridiculous, at least once you get past the first sixty floors. I was stuck on floor 78 (I think), that was the worst one. There's some really brutal u-turn jumps that demand incredible accuracy. At least you always know it's your fault, the game is never unfair.

I definitely see why it took Arino so long, especially under the pressure of a live show.

Yanai asked how he’s worried that he doesn’t compare to the older Ads, Oosuka asked what to do since he’s gained more than 30kg since he was in his teens, and Cardigan Takahashi asked about marriage. After they chat, Tani gives them a manga to help them with their problem.

Also, Arino will be one of the celebrities on tonight’s Ametalk that commemorates the 30th anniversary of Mario. Here’s the promo video.

I don't think so, in fact, I think it would be pretty successful considering how big "NERD CULTURE" is these days, ffs, VGHS is one of the top watched things on Netflix.

This has been an ongoing problem with HD broadcasting in general. Western stations have only recently figured out they need to cake their onscreen talent with special HD makeup (yes that's a thing) to cover up pores and blemishes. Lighting has also changed to become more diffuse. I don't know if you remember when US television made to switch to digital, but everyone looked positively awful for quite some time.

Essentially, it's just like Barcode Battler. They take the Monster Rancher PS1 game, which can generate monsters for you based on any sort of readable CD, and generate two monsters from audio CDs (singles, I guess). Arino bets on one of the two, then they fight.

At least that's what I can see from the first episode of season 19. No idea if they mix up the format down the line.

The 3DO enjoyed some brief popularity in Japan and had some notable games on it (D, SSF2, Samurai Shodown). As for the N64 they already did Mario 64 and Zelda, which weren't especially great episodes. Arino doesn't seem to excel at 3D action (even experiencing motion sickness) so we'll probably see more puzzle/adv/sim type titles. I'm still thinking Wonder Project J2 will happen. I also think Biohazard would make for some good comedy.

Watching the IQ episode for the first time. Holy shit this episode is an utter train wreck. The pacing was awful and nothing memorable happened. The game itself offers no tension since the viewer is going to be distracted in trying to figure out puzzle first which removes focus on Arino.There is no excuse to have this game be extended to a 2nd episode. They could have easily have cut the content down In arino's trial and error start, and his retries in level 2 and 3. And there wasn't any good banter between him and the AD Yanai.


Also who's the knucklehead who thought it was good to put this at 60FPS? It's really distracting.

If it bothers you then just re-encode it at 30fps or use a media player where you can adjust the frame rate. You can always go from 60fps -> 30fps but you can never go the other direction, which is why it's better to distribute 60fps files. i think i watched most episodes up to this point but to mellow out after a long day so i cant name specific stuff. i enjoyed watching arino play games which dont have a huge audience in the west such as that train-simulator, the segments inbetween sometimes were nice, but generally speaking i didnt care much about the interaction between him and his ADs, even though some of that was hilarious.

Lets Play are just that,a guy hopping on camera and playing a game and reacting in a series of videos, documenting the entire process with minimal editing or judicious cuts, 90% of the game-play and commentary is there.

Arino does hop on cam and play a game, but the difference is the multiple segments, the heavy editing and 'writing' applied to the footage and the fact that unlike most Lets Players, Arino is charming and funny.

The core of what he himself does is very similar, but GCCX's astronomically higher production values rise this well above the rank and file of Lets Play.

Because when you think of Lets Plays, you think of shitheads who overreact and scream in order to appeal to a crowd of twelve year olds and guys who sit alone in their moms basements giving boring commentary over random gameplay footage with no humor or editing. There are good let's players, but the term is usually associated with cancer and it leaves a bad taste in your mouth.

Arino doesn't overreact, he's naturally funny. He also has assistants and a crew who are part of the show, which makes it less of a one man show. It's edited in such a way that it doesn't get boring. Whenever it starts to get boring they switch to another segment and come back to the game later.

It's also because he's a Jap, and because I'm not a Jap, it's interesting to hear about their culture in relation to retro games. The segments where he visits shops and arcades are interesting because of this. I'm sure it could work just as well it was set in a different country with a different comedian, though I don't know of any other shows like Gamecenter CX.

The 30 minute cuts really spoil the site. Even Twitch, with its 20 second delays and awful community, lets you just put on a stream in the background and relax.

The membership to stream is probably a good thing, though. Keeps out the 12 year olds. The "nip-only" environment is pretty good too, the dank Nico memes seem far more tolerable than the Kappa and copypasta trains.
