Kind of hard to really choose.

I love Chrono Trigger. I love Final Fantasy 5, 7 and 8. I love Parasite Eve. I love Valkyrie Profile. I love Breath of Fire 3 (despite it being heavily, heavily flawed).

Its really hard to pick just one. I would probably pick FF7 or Chrono Trigger though. I just like the kind of feel good atmosphere (for the most part) that they present and how they aren't super serious all the time. I also like how they are very much Go from A to B and that they are for the most part not very grindy and fairly short.

I feel a lot of JRPG's that are really grindy or needlessly long are just awful (like Legend of Legaia, Xenogears, etc)

You have many choices when it comes to FFIV these days. I hope you're not the sort who recoils in disgust at the very suggestion you play something that's not retro:

-Arguably, the GBA version is the best version of the original game. If you can live with the graphical "upgrade," the PSP addition is also worth considering, as it offers the most content (and it lets you select the SNES soundtrack, at least).

-The DS/Steam versions are fairly extensive remakes and their gameplay differs quite a bit in some respects. I enjoyed both, and am curious as to why you doubt your ability to "handle" this version. If you only had to choose one (you don't!), I'd recommend a 2D edition, but that's speaking out of nostalgia mainly. The 3D version has its merits, too.

-If you absolutely insist on only playing the SNES title, do indeed get a Japanese version with an English patch; the US release is censored and has a few features removed. However, the translation from J2E, while arguably better than the SNES "Final Fantasy II" translation, takes too many liberties for my taste.

>> No.2457019

>>2457015
Everyone seems to forget the PlayStation version, which despite FF5, FF6, and Chrono Trigger's fate, has no noticeable load times beyond saving to the memory card, everything from FF4's Japanese release intact and an entirely new translation (and, in my opinion, the best out of all the official ones so far -- it's insane how many completely different English translations this game has now). Its only downside is that the sound effects are compressed for some odd reason, but music is fine, though.

the gba version is actually a port of the wonderswan version so yeah, it does have the best graphics
US and original Japanese version have added input lag from being a rushed port though, the Japanese revision B and the European versions fixed this. That is the preferable version if you're emulating.

Thanks for pointing out that the European has bugfixes, I always forget (and envy) that. That said, I never noticed/was negatively impacted by the bugs in the US version, so if one is buying an actual cart, don't let that stop you if there's a large discrepancy in price.

>>2457019
I didn't forget it, I just disregarded it. Translation aside (and, as you mentioned, different translations are hardly rare for this game), this games features dips in quality (however minor) and nothing new. Barring the Wonderswan, it's easily the weakest port. It's not a bad game in and of itself, but there are so many other options that best it.

There's a great tactical RPG on the 360 called Operation Darkness. It's basically WW2 meets Castlevania; you have Frankenstein, werewolves, and Jack the Ripper on your team and fight against Hitler's army of zombies, vampires, and SS soldiers. Also tanks, snipers, machine guns, etc. There's a surprising level of historical accuracy, apart from the supernatural stuff.

The lack of much meaningful character interaction (if you play the text adventures as well you can finally see the characters fleshed out) and the sameness of the locations for the first third or so of the game can really put people off. Also the dungeons are huge and confusing but that's part of what I like about it. It helps if you draw maps. The whole series is awesome (I even like 3), but 2 and 4 are probably my favorites. 4 for the story, 2 for the atmosphere and the grind.

>>2458298
>not pic related
Nei's death just didn't have much weight to it because of how little characterization any of the characters in PSII had. I think Alys' was a little better executed.

True. Then again, games early on didn't have too much characterization in the first place, although there are exceptions. Dragon Quest (Warrior) IV did amazingly well in that regard for an NES game.

That's a generic freeware character creator thing that like half of the shitty Renpy games out there use.

I'm playing it right now. I'm not very far (just beat Rosencratz after the Snowfly Forest).

Its pretty hard, the mechanics are pretty obtuse but the ingame documentation is suprisingly solid. The crafting system still eludes me quite a bit, my Hagane Shortsword with a guard that has 2 sockets has been ripping apart common enemies, but I'm dealing anywhere from 10-0 damage to most bosses, which turns fights into a drag. I've taken to getting hit a few times to bank up some damage so I can using Raging Ache to some effect.

Story's actually really good. I think if the mechanics were a bit easier to wrap your head around out the gate, and maybe the boss fights weren't so long it'd be a 10 but I think as of now I think its a great game, but quite flawed, so a 7.5-9 ish depending on the rest of it.

I fully agree with your analysis, that's most likely why 12y old me never finished it and got back to more standard RPGs.

I often thought a remake of that game would be excellent, because despite its flaws, VS has to be one of most unique RPGs I've had the chance to play.

Are you using your magical buffs and debuffs?

Vagrant Story is a game that requires familiarity with ALL of its various systems, you don't get to ignore any mechanics.

A lot of criticism gets thrown its way about how "switching weapons is a pain in the ass," but then when questioned why they aren't just strengthening their weapons with the crafting system they respond that they weren't using it.

It sounds like you're on the right track, though. At this stage of the game, the weapon tier is more important than its material.

I use Protasia (Item-Up) and Invigorate (Agi-Up) at the start of most fights. I use Degenerate occasionally if it looks like it goes through.

I've only really used my shortsword though. The other weapons I have are way weaker stat wise, although I did just make a Hagane Executioner 2handed sword, but its still edged type.
