Basically here is the /vr/ explanation of the Retron 5.

I grabbed one and haven't had any issues with it. Make sure to read up on which firmware is good or if the newest one is causing issues. Personally, I like how you can load translation patches onto an SD card and use it to play Japanese cartridges. I think it's a fun little machine and at the end of the day, if you're having fun and you enjoy it, keep enjoying it.

Funny thing is that they're using RetroArch/libretro, and RetroArch have shaders that fix this, but they're so lazy they didn't bother implementing it - they just have the crappy filters. So in the end you're paying for a neutered port of RetroArch.

Right. Something that has filters that makes something look 'ugly' is subjective bullshit. Play the game however you want to play the game. The important part is that you're playing a game, having fun, and enjoying some god damned /vr/

As for convenient, I'd say it is personally. I don't want to hook up like 6 systems to my TV, I'm lazy and don't want to hunt down each individual system at 40 bucks and up. I also just want to use a SNES controller, again, lazy. But you're still going to have to put those mountains of carts somewhere, since the Retron 5 requires you to insert a cart to dump and play, and cannot save that dumped cart to permanent memory.

I think a great feature would be to be able to record video output on your system while you play especially for Speed Runs, Let's Plays, Walkthroughs, etc. Unfortunately it just has screenshots.

Just in case: It is not the real deal! The Retron 5 is a box of stolen emulators on chip that need a cart to run, it also destroys carts with its grip. If you only play the well known games that the stolen (did I mention that already?) emulators are optimised for, it will play nearly flawlessly, other ones will be faulty, some won't play at all. for 20 bucks or so it would be worth the thought but not for what they charge you for a bunch FCUKING STOLEN FUCKING EMULATORS that you can get for free- and then simply input roms without the need for carts.

Emudevs do not get a penny for their work.

Nintendo or Sega do not lose money with people pirating cartridge games only sold by greedy collectors or scam shop profiting on retrogaming bubble.

Hyperkin is actually making $$$ on emudevs butt without paying anything in return, reducing the cost of the retron5 by saving thousand hours of dev work but still asking insane price for it (hardware real cost has been estimated to be way less than $50 per unit).

Hopefully for them, collectors do not care about moral and don't mind paying $$$ for emulators that they despised before in favor of the "real thing" and which have always been made vailaable for free everywhere else, as long as it justifies their useless cartridge collection to exist.

It wiped my 10-years game save from my FF3 cartridge on the first use.

It damaged my copy of Gunstar Heroes after I pulled it from the console several time (yeah, you can only have one of the 5 cartridge ports used at a time), breaking a corner of the pcb (hopefully no damaged pins) because the cartridge port is too tight and it seems like the console will be pulled apart everytime you remove a game (yeah, the plastic box is vey cheap and the console itself very light and fragile).

The NES port had a damaged pin after only one month of use, making a few games not working anymore.

Technically yeah, and you'd be able to play about 95% of them flawlessly.

But flashcarts are around 100-200$ (for the good ones)

So you'd be looking at around 6-800$ with sdcards for this console set up this way.

Retron5 does not work with any flashcart and never will.
Remember that thing dumps the ROM from the cartridge so it only works with known cartridge hardware (hence why it fails with cartridges like pier solar). Flashcarts have no ROMs to dump, only a boot RoM that usually is the menu used to flash ROM files from SD to cartridge memory .

Who the fuck does that? If you're a guy who cares about playing the real thing instead of an emulator, you wouldn't play on an emulator machine. You'd play on the original consoles connected to some old ass CRT tv with no HDMI input. If you don't give a shit, you might as well emulate the games on a PC which is way easier and you can choose the emulators you're going to use. You can download the roms instead of having to buy cartridges and constantly switching them out.
Retron 5 is for people who want the nostalgia of putting a cartridge into a console but don't care if they're really playing the cartridge or a dumped rom that's being emulated and upscaled to HD resolutions. I'm having a hard time believing that these people exist.

Yeah, no. Not sure what setting Retroarch-Wii has, aside from a shitty interface, but VGBA GX by default drops frames and the latest hacked copy running VGBA-M, like Retroarch, can do the same or run with no frame loss and noticeable slowdown the second two objects move. Wii simply is not strong enough for GBA emulation. And, SNES & Genesis work noticeably better with filtering disabled. Once again, because Wii is greatly underpowered.
