This gen of gaming I feel is very unique. It can provide a certain kind of gameplay that you just can't find in any other gen. What are your opinions on the 5th gen of gaming? Also which games do you feel are the best in their respective genres during this gen?

I feel pic related was the best platformer of the entire 5th generation of games.

handhelds and PC games of the time are also welcome here.

OK, I'll bite:

best games, by genre:

>survival horror
Silent Hill. (RE2 was good, but SH just takes it to another level)
>2D fighting
Dark Stalkers 3
>3D fighting
Tekken 3
>Racing
Need for Speed 3, R4, Gran Turismo 2, F-Zero X and RR64 as a 5-way tie. No, I'm not kidding around.
>vehicular combat
Twisted Metal 1
>RPG
this is a sensitive topic, but I have to be honest with myself and go with FFVII
>ARPG
Parasite Eve (it had an action based battle system, it fucking counts!)
>SRPG
Vandal Hearts (fuck FFT and everyone who likes it!)
>actual "running and jumping" Platformer
Crash Bandicoot 2
>3D item hunting "Platformer"
Tail Concerto
>Action/Adventure
Soul Reaver and Castlevania: SOTN as a tie
>best Zelda game
Blood Omen: The Legacy of Kain and Brave Fencer Musashi as a tie (because OoT just blows IMO)
>FPS
Goldeneye
>2D action
Megaman X4
>3D action
Syphon Filter 2
>stealth
Tenchu: Stealth Assassins
>Beat em Up
Fighting Force
>space shooter
Colony Wars

That's about it, I think. Feel free to rip my list apart, but I have my taste, and I don't care what's popular in the slightest. Sorry.

You have good taste anon. Also I should have probably said Spyro was the best 3D platformer. I think Abe's Exoddus was the best 2D platformer and best platformer overall. I love this game very much in fact. One of my favorites of all time.

Something about the kitschy early 3D worlds on PS1 make me feel all warm and fuzzy. Spyro is a very satisfying game to take your time and try and glide to different spots just for the hell of it.

>kitschy
you have no idea what this word means, it has absolutely nothing to do with an older video game.

>> No.2448763

>>2448742
Meaning quaint or charming. I'm talking specifically about the colorful 3D platformers of the era that have a vibrant, yet tacky stitched together cartoon look.

>> No.2448780

>>2448763
Please look up the word "kitsch", it does not mean quaint or charming.

>tacky stitched together cartoon look.
I'm guessing you're under 20 and didn't grow up with 5th gen consoles. Those were state of the art at the time.

>> No.2448795

I loved this generation because I was old enough to have job and buy games for it. 3d was still like the wild west in arcades and home. 6th gen felt like 16-bit all over again. 7th, I don't even know what the point is.

>> No.2448836

>>2448693

I'll make my own for the genres I actually played back then.
>survival horror
Gotta agree with Silent Hill here. Clock Tower comes close for me, not as psychological, but very frantic.
>2D fighting
I think it was called Pocket Fighter? The 2D chibi Street Fighter game.
>3D fighting
Tekken 3 for sure.
>Racing
Road Rash 3D. Countless hours on it.
>vehicular combat
Twisted Metal 2
>RPG
Star Ocean: The Second Story. Favorite game of all time.
>SRPG
Ogre Battle 64
>actual "running and jumping" Platformer
Crash Bandicoot 2
>3D item hunting "Platformer"
Spyro: Ripto's Rage
>Action/Adventure
Castlevania: SOTN
>FPS
Goldeneye. Haven't been beaten in over a decade.
>2D action
Megaman X5, Mischief Makers if you count that as an action game
>3D action
Drawing a blank for some reason
>stealth
Metal Gear Solid
>Beat em Up
Fighting Force 2

A couple similarities between us. Good taste, sir.

>This gen of gaming I feel is very unique. It can provide a certain kind of gameplay that you just can't find in any other gen.
It's because it was the literal golden age and apex of game design culture, 5th gen happened during a period of relative economic wealth that allowed most devs to just do what they wanted to without extreme pressure on budgets and such. 5th gen basically took all the basic notions and ideas from 3rd and 4th gens, elaborated them further and mixed them up freely, it was a brave new world of crazy genre blending, pastiches and exploring new groudns, that was also amplified by the huge shifts in technology, 3d, and generally more powerful machines and supports allowed a huge push forward compared to 3rd to 4rth gen.
That's why most classic games formulas are basically expanded a lot, see FFVII, Front Mission 2, G-Darius, Vampire Saviour or Oot, and there's a lot of groundbreaking or unique games like Koudelka, SOTN, Vagrant Story, Galerians and Silent Bomber.
>Also which games do you feel are the best in their respective genres during this gen?
A full list of a ll genres would be too long and I honestly don't have much expertise in certain genres so...

>Survival Horror
Probably Silent Hill, though AITD4 was also nice
>Fighting Games
Vampire Saviour, SFEX2Plus
>Racing
GT2
>JRPGs
Too many, SaGa Frontier 1&2, Legend of Mana and Vagrant Story are probably the top notch games of the time, Tales of Eternia is very nice too
>WRPGs
Daggerfall, Fallout
>SRPG
Vandal Hearts 2, Front Mission 2
>Platformer
Rayman, Crash Bandicoot 3
>Action
Armored Core Series, Silent Bomber, GITS: Megatech Body
>FPS
Unreal, Quake 2, Hexen
>2d Sidescroller
SOTN
>Run And Gun
MSX
>SHMUP
ZanacXZanac, Gradius Gaiden
>Beat Em Up
Rising Zan, Destrega maybe?
>Space Shooter
Star Ixiom
>Stealth
Tenchu games, MGS
>Kart
CTR, ReVolt 2
>Random Fun
Incredible Crisis
>Sports
THPS2, Dave Mirra BMX
>3D Item Hunting
Terracon, Spyro 3

And the list could go on.

Why everyone choses Crash Bandicoot 2 instead of 3? I played 3 much more so I ofc think it's better, but even if I try to be objective 2 just seems to be a less *rich* game. Still great, sure, but do you really like 2 more? Or it's same as me but in reverse - you played 2 much more and earlier so it had a larged impact?

Great taste. They don't make em like they used to. It's my favorite game of all time too.

The 5th generation were the teenage years of the gaming industry. We barely know what to do with all the technology changes and we can barely stand thestuff that we thought was pretty cool back then.

The blunder years of gaming.
