Namco is responsible for some of the most classic and iconic arcade games of all time, like Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Galaxian/Galaga, and Tekken, just to name a few. Which (retro) Namco game is your favorite?

>> No.2447189

>>2447173
It's probably PSX Soul Blade which aside from Bushido Blade is the only 3D fighter I've liked.

The close runner up is dig dug which I love quite a bit.

Ohh fuck, how did I forget the Tales games? I change my answer, it's Tales of Destiny by far.

Though Tales of Eternia is also retro, let's just try to forget that it exists.

>> No.2447215

I've always been partial to the Rolling Thunder series

>>2447198
Wasn't there one on the SFC (Phantasia) and two on the PS (Destiny and Eternia)? I'm sure there was another one on the GBC too.

>> No.2447227

My favorite is probably Galaga, but I've sunk more quarters into Time Crisis 2 than probably any other arcade game. And I probably owe Cyber Sled a big debt of gratitude, as it was almost certainly a huge influence on Virtual On, which is one of my favorite games of all time.

>> No.2447290

These threads never have enough Ace Combat. The series turns 20 this year.

Pac-Man was literally the first video game I ever played. I wouldn't say it's my favorite game or anything, but I've always had a little nostalgic soft spot for it. A month or so ago Pac-Man Museum went on sale on PSN and I got it. So I've been enjoying playing the original along with some of the other weird little pac games I missed out on over the years.

I'm just a bit sad the Museum didn't include Junior Pac-Man, because that's also one I remember playing originally in arcades when I was very young and enjoying. But I haven't played or even seen any version of it anywhere in like 20 years. Maybe it was really bad and I didn't notice because I was super young. Seems like no one else even remembers the game, not even Namco.

>> No.2447445

>>2447436
Jr. Pac Man was an unofficial game made by Bally/Midway.

The only unofficial Pac Man game that Namco adopted was Ms. Pac Man.

Was it really unofficial? I'm sure Namco authorized all of Midway's Pac-Man and just didn't care about them enough to localize them, except for Ms. Pac-Man (which was too popular to ignore).

soul calibur 2 and 3 were around the same time period and are listed here, mr post policeman

It was unofficial and unauthorized. There's a reason it has never been included in modern compilations.

I'm pretty sure Namco was well aware of Midway's sequels, since they even adopted Pac Jr. as a character in Pac-Man II.

Guy who originally mentioned Jr. Pac-man here. I've been reading up on the games on wikipedia, apparently Bally Midway made 6 "unauthorized" pac games: Ms. Pac-man, Pac-man Plus, Baby Pac-Man, Jr. Pac-Man, and Professor Pac-man.

I guess unauthorized means Namco had nothing to do with the creation of the games, but Namco did apparently have a licencing agreement with Bally Midway that was the reason they could use the Pac-man character at all. The licence was cancelled after Professor Pac-man flopped. Because it was a fucking quiz game. I would assume Namco still has the rights to those games though.

/vr/'s rules permit anything 1999 and before. The only exception is games released on consoles published on or before that time, even if they are past the cut-off date. Dreamcast games are fine, N64 games from 2000 and 2001 are fine.

Steve Olson, who worked on Ms. Pac-Man, states that Namco was fully aware that Midway was working on a Pac-Man sequel and actually assisted them in designing the character.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlopaTBDYuo

Pic related shows the initial design for Pac-Woman before Namco redesigned her into Ms. Pac-Man. Even though Namco themselves didn't release Ms. Pac-Man in Japan until its inclusion in Namco Museum Vol. 3 on the PS, they still marketed the character in merchandizing and magazine.

I imagined it was the same deal with Jr. Pac and all the other Midway Pac-Man, but there's little information about their development due to their obscurity.

Soul Calibur for life, yo. I fucking love the soundtrack for the console version, and I'm actually pretty disappointed in Junichi Nakatsuru for not including 'Going to Where The Wind Blows' as part of the ending theme in V; it's pretty much been a staple in the soundtrack ever since Soul Calibur (don't remember if it was in Soul Blade).

I discovered Burning Force recently. It's a nice game. I also like Mr. Driller.

>> No.2449815

My favorite Namco arcade game is Point Blank, a lightgun game. Could literally play it for hours, some stages were pretty difficult, maybe that was due to the fact that the machine I was playing it on was wrecked and the calibration was iffy at best.

A cabinet is still on my list of things I will definitely buy once I'm earning £50k+ along with a full 12ft snooker table.

Is there a way to do a fast turn in these games? I try playing AC2 but missing an enemy and turning around to find them takes forever.

>>2447580
Thank goodness Namco offered some input - those Ms. Pacmen are hideous! Yikes.

>>2449670
Burning Force is probably my favorite forward-scrolling arcade shooter.

===

I am a big fan of the Namco Museum series on the PS1, and my favorite is currently Valkyrie no Densetsu/Legend of Valkyrie. It's just a fun action-centric Zelda-esque game.

Though the games are more iffy, I really dig the worlds of Genpei Toumaden and Tower of Druaga.

They've got plenty of decent titles but few stand out to me as overall exceptional. The two I tend to like are Time Crisis and to a lesser degree Outfoxies. TC in the arcades is pretty much the gold standard for lightgun shooters.
