I fail to see how a device released years later that shares the name changes the fact that PSX was a common acronym since before the Playstation was even released.

Back when early info about Sony and Nintendo working together on a SNES addon was leaking, it was code named the Play Station X. Magazines used the acronym PSX, and it stuck through the release on the actual console. People on Usenet groups started using PSX and it hung around on the Internet until the PS2 was announced.
