Anyone else miss pinball?

Not really. We have a ton of venues here that have classic and new pinball machines. Plus, I can get a little nostalgic fix by playing Pinball Arcade on Steam.

Pinball is considered /vr/ material.

But in any case, it hasn't gone anywhere. In fact, pinball is enjoying a MAJOR resurgence at the present.

However, this is also a bad thing. Prices on machines are going through the roof. People complain about retro console game prices, but they're nothing compared to the inflated prices on pinball machines. Now is a terrible time to be a collector.

I will bet that in, say, 2018 the market will be flooded with people dumping off their old games that they bought out of nostalgia and/or fad following since they'll have become nothing more than large quantities of crap that they don't use. When that day inevitably comes I think prices will become a lot more favorable.

nah man

it used to be you could buy most early solid state machines for $300-$500. exceptions made for games with radical themes

most electromechanical games could be had for $0-$300. people just werent into these older games that lacked the bells and whistles

now everybody goes online, sees twilight zone and addams family selling for $5000+, and thinks their random old pin from 1975 should sell for at least $1000

you'll see them put it out on ebay or craigslist and just relist over and over and over because nobody's biting at that price. but then other retards see it and the overall prices start to climb

I can't git gud at pinball. How well I do ultimately comes down to luck, but I know that good players can keep the ball in play indefinitely. I have half a second to calculate where the ball will go over the next 20 seconds, lest it falls down the middle and out of the paddle's reach.

not him, but id say there is always a luck factor. it's just that if you're skilled enough, luck shouldnt fuck you up too bad

also it completely depends on how the operator set up the table. there's a The Walking Dead pin at Coney Island set up to drain down the middle constantly because it's a pinball machine in the middle of a carnival. it's really fucking hard to not drain it down the middle

but the same machine at an arcade i frequent run by a few guys who love pinball is way more fair

My older brother is amazing at pinball. He even qualified for a top 10 spot at a tournament back in the nineties (I think the machine was Apollo 13). He doesn't give a shit about video games and would never buy his own machine. I'm pretty jelly.

>Holy fuck finding a working TNG is like a miracle.

I'm assuming you're American, because if you were from where I'm from (Germany, but it really stretches to most of Europe from what I've seen), finding a working ANYTHING is a fucking miracle, and so is finding a particular machine that isn't Addams Family.

I don't know what it is with the operators around Germany, Spain, Portugal, Malta and Cyprus (the latter ones being places I've been to on vacation), but they all don't seem to give a single flying fuck about the state their machines are in. I must have played at least fifty, if not a hundred different physical tables around Europe, and I can count off the ones in decent working order on my hands - and that's counting the Mr. and Mrs. Pac-Man standing in my basement with some busted lights, an over-sensitive tilt that goes off randomly (even when I set the tilt sensitivity really god damn low) and a bumper that likes to trigger when the ball only gets near it. Those issues are nothing compared to the crap I've seen over the years. Good fucking lord, the horror stories I've seen in action.

The only time I've ever been to a place that had pinballs that were in proper working order was when I was on vacation in the States, and I'm grateful as hell every time I stumble across a place that actually takes care of its tables. One time, I managed to get to the PAPA headquarters right as the tournament was going on, and it was like being a kid in a candy store. Sooooo many tables, oh my god. And they all WORKED. And if they broke, you could call somebody, and they would FIX IT, like within half an hour. Fucking pinball nirvana, let me tell you.

>lest it falls down the middle and out of the paddle's reach.

That's why you bump the table to knock the ball out of the drainage lane and over one of your flippers. Takes practice though, or you'll trigger a tilt by shaking the table too much.

There was a brief period over the course of a summer where my family had a fully working Comet (the roller coaster/amusement park one) machine in our garage. What a time that was...

I live in the Philly area, but am often in Ocean City NJ on the weekends. In Philly, its a ways out there, but there was a dedicated pinball place called the Pinball Gallery in Downingtown, though its apparently going to move and reopen in Malvern, which is closer. There's also a place near the colleges that has a few pinball machines I believe. In Ocean City however, there's three arcades with pinball machines, one of which has 12 active machines and is open year round. So quite frankly, I don't really miss pinball.

Any pinball wizards out there that can tell me what I'm doing wrong? Whenever I play, it takes maybe ten minutes for my wrists to start hurting pretty bad, like carpal tunnel or something. I have to occasionally hold the ball with a flipper and lest my wrist rest. I don't think I'm placing my hands on the table in an awkward position or anything, and I don't get pain like that when I'm sitting on the computer all day at my desk job.
