Can we talk about the masterpiece that is Ogre Battle 64?

Masterpiece is hyperbolic. Nice game, especially given the lack of any rpgs or srpgs on the N64. But it's no Tactics Ogre. Though I'm surprised Squeenix hasn't given it a mobile port, it would work really well for that. I assume they still own the rights.

It was boring. Nothing go talk about.

I was just about to start this up again. I love the idea of the game, my only complaint is the small amount of troops you can deploy and the tendency of using one or two overpowered squads vs many other types. Also, healing units were incredibly strong because of the ability for clerics and the like to completely undo damage.

you can just use cheats anon

or you could play legit ironman mode

>> No.2438246

2 complaints.

1. There were some real OP units. You could easily beat the game with those units alone. They would destroy all units against them.

2. Some units like Vampire and Lich took hours and hours to unlock. You had to do so much.

If anything what bothers me is the existence of stat-increasing items in the game (that increase stat-gains at level up when equipped)

really rustles my jimmies that you have to wait to get them

I want to cheat them all in at the start, but then that would ruin the challenge of the game

but then the challenge of the game isn't that much to begin with

you really have to rush the game without training to make it hard, and even then it's more of a bullshit situation where all the enemies will use healing items between battles and sandbag you, which is really more tedious than anything else because you have to go through the slow-ass combats that many more times.

What's more is that Vampires ended up being garbage units IIRC. Yeah they had life steal but their damage output wasn't great and half the time they forced the unit to be immobile and acted as a shitty wall that didn't do anything.
Also lol legions.

They were a gimmick unit really. IS IT NIGHT YET!?

Dragons were pretty OP. And the later magic books broke the game.

Vampires would've been fine if you got one semi-early as a special unit, perhaps in place of Biske. It's just by the time you get them, they're contending with spellcasters with draconian books, physical powerhouses with three attacks per combat, and a slew of special characters that completely wreck everything. Their drawback is annoying, but I wouldn't even mind it so much if they were just a good endgame unit.

The other issue with vampires is that their self-healing and coffin that takes almost no damage paint them as a tank, yet to really get anything out of the healing, you need to make them a unit that's going to have low VIT gains, which means the front line is not the place for them.

I would've really like if Werewolves weren't cut as a generic class, they still exist in game data but don't flip properly on nightfall.

This. 15 minutes battles = sorry no.

I can't remember which mission it is, but the boss is the knight Ariosh.
Why is he the only boss in the game who moves off his base? It's hard to capture it, because he runs back to it. But by flanking him from multiple angles, I was able to do it once. The mission ended without fighting him, but I think the cut scene played out the same way it always does.

Maybe because he has that powerful Ogre? In case the player is too weak for it? Or is it a glitch?

It's probably a flag that didn't get set correctly for his unit. As I remember, you have to engage him once, and then he starts to chase you a short distance. It could also be to show that his bloodlust has overtaken him under the infernal aura.

Either way, I don't think it was because of his Ogre because as far as two tile monsters go, Ogres are actually pretty low on the totem pole.

The golems were a pain to "evolve"

>A Clay Golem will change into a Stone Golem when attacked by petrification
>A Stone Golem will change into a Baldr Golem when attacked by a wind based attack

>> No.2438650

>>2438638
Evolved golems have lower stats than wild Baldur golems anyway. Skeletons are still a pain to get while having some very minor use, except the earlier you get them, the worse stats they have (They have poor growths, but they regenerate to full health each time they're killed, so if you leave them as a black knight or other high strength character for a long time before making them, they'll hit exceptionally hard and revive after each fight.).

>> No.2440759

>>2438650
Just stay away from holy attacks because if they get killed by a holy attack they're gone forever. Same goes for zombies and ghosts. Not sure about any of the angels though. Those fuckers were hard to get anyway unless you love and peace'd an enemy unit.

>> No.2440808

>>2440759
Nah, angels are undead, but they don't die to virtue attacks and don't regenerate, like a lich. Also, that's the worst thing about actually making beefy undead -- you have to leave them as humans for a long time for good stat growths, yet later in the game, angel knights and seraphs start showing up in enemy ranks, so you can't really take advantage of them there.
