I'll use my Model 1 controller whenever I'm playing Virtual On (I do wish I had twinsticks, that shit'd be beautiful), but for most other games, I'll use my Model 2 because the d-pad is nicer.

in an ideal world, Sega would have just left the d-pad alone but used the Model 1 body shape

Apparently Australia saw another variant with built in turbo buttons, I assume it's third party but officially rebranded; they did a similar thing with a MD pad that had a screw in mini stick.

I'm almost certain theres at least one more 'kinda official' branded-generic pad, it has an off center hard plastic start button but i think its just another forgettable mushy dpad.
