Whilst its not entirely good looking, the character models and textures look really nice in HD.

Overall, MM Legends 1/2 and Tron Bonne are kinda ugly games. The environments are just so plain. But the character models/textures are great.

Insert Possessioner GIF here.

The remake of Ohkotsk no Kiyu for the PC-98 has excellent art.

Maybe the ruins and connecting areas are sparse, but I love the characters, faked shading, and towns/vehicles.

2D background games are just gorgeous. Ones that stand out:

>Resident Evil 2
>Final Fantasy 7

These basically need to be played on a CRT TV though to make the backgrounds look sharp.

2D games:

>Symphony of the Night
>Rondo of Blood

Legend of Mana (the rest of the list is unordered, but this is my number one pick for best looking /vr/ game)
Ridge Racer Type 4 (best 3D graphics on the system)
Wipeout 3 (debatable, but I think it looks good enough to be on a list like this)
Yoshi's Island
Ristar (maybe not the absolute best on the system, but it's top three)
Jet Set Radio (the visuals look fantastic even today)
Metal Slug 1-3 (MS3 is the best looking game on the Neo)

This guy's got it pretty much

Anything with a "style" to it still looks good. Anything that tried to go for realism/looking "good" doesn't hold up that well. It's why games like Legend of Mana or Jet Set or Yoshi's Island will always look good, and why games that went for realism like FF8 will look pretty bad.

Too many games lacked style, which is a problem that persists even today.

Blade Runner (1997) looks pretty damn amazing. They made a huge effort to copy the look of the film and they really really succeeded.

also, voxel characters. got to love non-polygonal 3d

In this particular game they look a lot better than bad polygons at least.

>> No.2435951

>>2435945
it's more than that. 3D accelerators can only do one thing, rasterizing polygons. Before 3D accelerators were a thing there was a wide range of 3D engines, be it raycasters, rasterizers, voxels and who knows what else. Ever since then it's all been textured polygons. A little bit of variety is coming back, due to gpgpu and sophisticated shaders, but in the meantime the 3D accelerators killed engine creativity

another example of a timeless beauty that took advantage of not using a 3D accelerator.
Voxel landscape aside this game had pixel shading effects we wouldn't see again for several years. Stuff like water shaders (reflection, refraction, distortion), depth of field, antialiasing, non-uniform fog, smooth lod

Instead of trying to do lackluster photorealism, the devs went with a style that looks very specific, and is consistent across in-game and cutscenes

>> No.2436803

>>2436029
It's a more simplistic shading style, which means it holds up better over time compared to more complex graphics that look more and more outdated as technology improves.
