NES version. I finally beat it legit for the first time a couple weeks ago. felt good to finally beat a game that's been kicking my ass for the last 25+ years. it was one of the few NES games I owned as a kid and I still could never get past Willy.

That's not the real Billy/Hammer sprite from the 7800 version of Double Dragon, it's a fanmade one highlighting how it could've been if the people ported the game actually pushed the 7800 specs to their limits. And honestly, I'm not convinced the 7800 could handle a sprite like that without sacrificing the game in some other way.

Fun fact: Technos actually wanted arcade-sized sprites for their NES version of Double Dragon, but it made it impossible to have more than one unique character on-screen at the same time. Hence why got that Vs. Mode with only mirror matches.

Not him, but I don't see that many fans of the arcade versions posting online nowadays as you would've seen at least a decade ago. Most of the online nostalgia nowadays revolves around the NES versions for some reason.

Personally, I would found the NES version more balanced than the arcade. The arcade is pretty easy to cheese your way using the elbow strike (B+C).

It's easy to clear the game with the elbow, but I actually find it more fun (and challenging) without it, since it forces you to learn how the enemy A.I. works.

Some players are insane enough to go for a headbutt only run, but I never get very far limiting myself to just one move (it's hard enough to resist temptation from the elbow as it is).

Yeah, and it's broken as fuck.

I also try to not use the elbow too much, it's a bit more entertaining, but i still have to use it with some enemies, especially the final stage.

Oh don't play dumb about elitism when you purposely engage in gaming discussions on a public forum, where you want your opinions to be heard.

Arcade players look down on the NES players much like every other Arcade port of that era (aside from rare exceptions like Altered Beast) so willingly playing an inferior version at a later point of your life is pretty bizarre.

why would that be an exception

also NES Double Dragon is better than the arcade and a substantially different game regardless of your opinion of the quality anyway

Which ones? Cause honestly Double Dragon is one few arcade games from that era that had some semblance of a huge following and most people who disliked the first NES Double Dragon only did so because of the lack of co-op (something the sequels fixed). Most NES versions of arcade games, like Contra, Ninja Gaiden and Bionic Commando (to name a few) actually ended up achieving a bigger following than the originals.

I appreciate Double Dragon but it feels so damn outdated, glad this bad boy came out to define the genre.
