Where is thy lord and savior now, /vr/?

>> No.2420279 [DELETED]

It's the guy writing the article that says current roms are incomplete and missing key elements, NOT THE GUY BEING INTERVIEWED. There is zero evidence that what the guy being interviewed played was any different than what is available today.

This is nothing but blogspam/clickbait.

This awesome thing that you want to play exists and I've played it and it was glorious!

You'll probably never play it though tee-hee but just thought you'd like to know anyway in case you get off on knowing people are enjoying things you'll never enjoy.

I would love to know how a Nintendo game on Nintendo console using a Nintendo owned chipset would have legal problems from a company that already signed off their rights to all aspects of the game to the company that paid them to make it.

Who knows. For some reason even if there were no legal issues Nintendo just doesn't strike me as a company to release something like that.

they cant even be bothered to put Mother 3, despite aknowledging the request, despite the existance of a fan patch that they could easily acquire, something done already in the case of Steins Gate.

With stuff like that I wonder if they just lack the manpower or if they don't think it is economically viable so they just sit on it until they think they can turn maximum profits.

This SNES game was going to be released in late or mid 1995, not 1996. Plus the N64 got delayed more than just a couple times. Why didn't Nintendo take that chance of releasing this game in the midst of the N64 delays?

To be fair most prototypes are of released games and many times only terribly interesting to the most obsessive (autistic) of gamers. There are exceptions of course but if you look at proto to retail comps you see a lot of " copyright info differs. enemy A is placed twenty pixels over in stage 2. Stage 3 has 4 platforms instead of five. A third whisker was added to the cat enemy. A scrapped level concept can be found in the proto. Music was changed here. A debug menu is present."

But yeah I get your point. Just funny when a game dev teases it. I guess people never outgrow their "uncle who works at Nintendo" fantasies.

Because the 32 bit systems were already out and they didn't want to release a 3D game that looked way worse than what was available on them. Sony was a huge rival for Nintendo at the time.

We don't know. The guy didn't say.
The earlier builds had a rudimentary VS mode. Maybe that was added back in, but I highly doubt it considering the most recent build that's on the internet is near-final as it is.

Some people have gone nuts over development boards with far fewer differences. A Swedish guy a few years back dropped about $3K on a DKC3 development board that had zero known differences with the retail release. We were expecting it to sell in the region of $150-$300 at the time. Apparently the guy had a history of doing this, having overspent shitloads of money on other prototype boards in the past including SMB2.

I remember another guy with a prototype Lufia board that was enormously different from the original, like a completely different game making it one hell of a find. The genius bought a programmer to dump the EEPROMs and tried dumping them with his programmer in write mode. Needless to say that prototype is gone forever.

DKC3 is my favorite game.
There are confirmed differences in the prototype (may be a different one that I'm thinking of) and I've played the DKL3 Prototype to hell and back and I'll be waiting for the day he finally dumps it.

I think he is the same guy who had the SMB2 prototype dumped from under his nose so I'm not too hopeful however.

BMF (TCRF founder) posted the SMB2 story on byuu's old forum at one point. That board is gone so this is all from memory.

Apparently BMF had been in contact with the Swedish guy about examining the ROM for potential differences and with the eventual goal of getting it released. Over time, the Swedish guy warmed to the idea and agreed to allow it to be examined. BMF posted the ROM on a private subforum on the rustedlogic (TCRF) forums, which is generally a very safe place full of reliable people, still with the intent that it was to be examined.

One of the newest members to said subforum went rogue and released the ROM publicly, fucking over the entire community in the process and souring the owner on working with any such people again.

Regarding the DKC3 prototype, I'm not aware of the owner reaching out to anyone with the aim of getting it examined by more knowledgeable people. There are plenty of talented people, not just at TCRF but also specialist communities like dkc-atlas.com who'd love to get a good look at it.

I think I read somewhere he wasn't able to get it to run on any emulators? Which is rather suspicious could indicate it wasn't dumped properly and in turn makes any of the examination thus far suspect.

It's the first time I've heard that he listed it on ebay. I was aware of him selling other boards but not that one. Trying to get $8K for it is really disturbing. I'd wouldn't go much higher than $500, but only because I'd consider myself enthusiast tier where this game is concerned. Apparently the guy had never even played the game prior to buying it either.

Differences are fairly meaningless for the most part unless they can be observed in-game, which none of those can.

There are a few exceptions such as unused content, but unless that can be proven it doesn't really count.

Prototypes have gone full retard. A blank, unpopulated, no chance of any game on it due to lack of EPROMs, SNES proto longboard PCB recently sold for not too far from the bottom range of your estimate for that DKC3. Nintendo protos everywhere (ebay and elsewhere) seem to have spiked in value within the past year. I know just last year I picked up a handful of GB ones for like, around $50+/- a piece? Now those same ones would likely sell for at least double that, if not pushing mid-$100 range.

I guess the hipsters are evolving and trying to get "trophy pieces" or something. It is incredibly unfortunate since I highly doubt many of them even know how to back them up or are willing to figure out how.

>> No.2421140

>>2421107
This sort of behavior is pretty typical in collector scenes. I buy and sell records on ebay; I recently sold an early Elliott Smith LP for a decent amount, in flawless condition, and the guy who bought it was furious. He sent me a bunch of crazy emails and started a claim with Paypal, saying the record was all fucked up and wouldn't play, skipped all over the place, etc. Turns out he was using some piece of shit turntable from Costco with a bad needle and had messed up the LP himself.

Some people get into collecting and have money but no common sense, unfortunately.

>> No.2421153

>>2421140
That sucks. Did you wind up getting shafted? Or did ebay/PP find in your favor?

That is the sad thing about fads, when people get into it and throw their money around to ruin rare items for future potential buyers and making the market prices skyrocket for the current buyers. About the only comfort I can find is that with the extremely rapid and intense increase I feel that chances are good it will settle down significantly within a few years, or at the very least stay stable.

As outdated as the saying may be, I think "lurk moar" should apply to things outside of 4chan and forums.

I'm not sure why owners are so defensive about getting their boards dumped.
Are they afraid they won't have "one of a kind pieces" anymore because the ROM will be digitally available on the internet?
That's stupid. Copies are copies. He still has the original. That's worth something.

Most prototypes that have been released have been by people how don't feel that way, so there's that.

That said, the SMB2+DKC3 guy has typically been much more cooperative than most collectors, many of whom will tell you to fuck off and rub it in your face or ignore you altogether.

unreleased protos, particularly of unreleased titles are an investment and worth significant amounts of money.

i know someone with unreleased neogeo prototypes of games that the vast majority of people don't even know exist. do you really expect this person to just give the roms away out of the goodness of their heart?

they could dump the roms, get the game-breaking bugs patched and then sell completed games for $500 a pop and be rich.

Cool!

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. There is something nice about having something that is extremely rare and possibly even one of a kind. I think a big factor for some owners not wanting to dump games is actually the selfish nature of a lot of internet beggars. They demand stuff be released, many of them never pay a cent for the data, and even more of them have never released a prototype to the public themselves.

At the end of the day, what does the proto-releaser gain from said release? Unless he is doing a fundraiser to release it, at best he gets some random people saying "thanks." Chances are high that no one will even know he was the one who released it. Some generous souls get joy out of giving away things for free, others think they are doing little more than feeding selfish internet kids who feel that the data is owed to them.
