I heard that some people consider the original PlayStation as the last of the classic retro consoles, but is it really?

I always thought it was the first of the modern consoles.

What do you think, /vr/?

Fuck, Frogger was the 3rd best selling of the console?!?!

I've never played it, and I can't even remember anyone I know having it. And as teenagers at the time me and my friends had a shit ton of playstation games.

>> No.2419516

240p is a bit misleading as it suggests 320x240 when the PS1 could do 256 320 512 & 640 x 240 in game. Namco used it as their low cost arcade machine and I most certainly played Soul Edge in the arcades.

it has this 2D 1/2 thing going on in a lot of cases so yeah, together with the N64 it is.

Nah, the Dreamcast was the last of the classic retro consoles.

> Mix of 2D and 3D
> Tons of fighting games
> Tons of shmups
> Lots of titles with arcade style gameplay
> Focus on fun

I feel like the PS2 is the first of the modern console era,

> It was the first to make a huge deal about movie capability

Saturn's VCD doesn't really count because hardly anyone used it, and as a bonus the PS2 even had Netflix Streaming in Brazil.

> Toward the end of it's life it started to usher in the era of multiplayer being online only instead of splitscreen

Significantly fewer 2-4 player splitscreen games to play when you are your bros were having a sleepover or a videogame party.

> Significantly fewer arcade style games

Arcades were dead or dying by the time the PS2 was running at full steam

> No shit flinging from Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft at each other, no memorable ad campaigns

Nothing is more retro than magazine ads from one hardware company being complete assholes to another. You didn't have any naked women or awesome catchphrases or live action propaganda videos shipped to your house on VHS tapes

The PS1 was definitely at the point where gaming was transitioning, but I still think the PS2 was the first console to really kickstart the "modern" console blueprint.

You never would have survived the 90's, bro. We didn't even have USB until later on, and at first we only had 2 USB ports on the back of the TOWER, so you basically got to choose two things and that was it.

It's the first of the modern consoles.

It's when gaming turned from a pure hobbyist pursuit enjoyed by people who knew games weren't about graphics and story and other bullshit to modern "games". FF7 (which went way more mainstream and story-based than its already story-heavy predecessors), fucking Metal Gear Solid (barely a game), and many more solidified the PS1 as a "new generation" game machine targeted not to established gamers but "new gamers" that didn't care anything for tried and true gaming.

>tfw SCPH-1000

There are two revisions of the SCPH-1000. The second prevents the exploit which allows the booting of backups. Because of this, all NTSC-J PlayStation since the first revision are region locked, even with a modchip.

So I got a decent condition one cheap, and it ended up having the locked BIOS. I later won another one that had the original BIOS and swapped the boards over. I also had the swap the I/O which involved a bunch of soldering as the better board I/O was rusted. I stole shielding from a SCPH-1002 I had, replaced the main capacitor on the power supply to reduce heat output and installed a Mayumi V2.1 modchip. I also swapped the AAM laser for an ACM laser that was in the 1002. And that is the end of that.

Also have a SCPH-5500. It has a 5501 motherboard and a Mayumi V4 installed. Kinda want to pick up a 5502 and steal the PSU for it so I don't have to use my step down converter like I do with the SCPH-1000.

Also, a console is defined by the era of which it was released and the age of it. I personally think that /vr/ should embrace the 6th generation as being "retro" now too given that the 8th generation of hardware is in full swing. Especially when you consider the SD nature of the console which cements them in the past.

I also consider the DC to be the last one. It is actually a modern one, but given what it lasted and what it did during that time (and the games it got) it feels like the star that's about to die and shines as strong as ever.
It was pure arcade heaven embracing stuff PC gaming had at the time, in a little compact (and cheap) console.
The PS2 promised to be almost a computer at the beginning, but it ended up making videogames more like movies, in the way they're presented and percieved by consumers. Also, the same, regarding how long it lived and what it did in that time (and the games it got) I see it as the first "modern" console as well.
but I think arguments like this could be made between the 4th and 5th generation so it doesn't really matter.

Yeah. He had Smash Bros too but he hated losing. Mario Party was something he was good at so we always played that. His parents weren't that well off and I felt bad so I bought him Majora's Mask for his birthday.

I wonder how one can be good at Mario Party. it's the kind of game where ANYONE can win depending on luck, which is why it caused so much butthurt and friendship termination.

Yeah, most of my friends had chipped PS1s. I bought my games used from Blockbuster (same place I got MM), to be honest modchips were expensive in my area otherwise I probably would've gotten one too.

>Is the PS1 version of Chrono Trigger worth it?
AVOID AT ALL COSTS

It has ridiculous lag. As a kid, I had just bought USFF2 from eBay, and I sold it because Final Fantasy Chronicles just came out, and it had the FF I just bought *and* it had Chrono Trigger

The FF4 part of Chronicles is alright, but the Chrono Trigger part is horrendous; I feel bad for anyone who played the PS1 CT before they played other versions. Anytime you want to go to a menu, there is 10 seconds of loading lag. Encounters are another 5 or so seconds of load time, before *and* after. It's asinine.

Furthermore, stay away from the PSN versoni of Chrono Trigger as well. It's like a 250mb download, it's stored on your system, and there are no moving parts for it to load, right?

FUCKING WRONG

The PSN version of Chrono Trigger even emulates the lag that the PS1 version had. I have no idea how since it's just a solid rom file or whatever, but they did it. The stupid long loading times before menus, battles, screen transitions, and everything really was somehow carried over in the emulation. I'm still baffled.

So before you waste your money, please read this and dont bother with PS1 or PSN Chrono Trigger. It's on of my top 5, but it absolutely isn't worth it. I would rather people never play it than to play it with such terrible load times.

If you're emulating, just emulate the SNES or DS versions. DS is actually superior, but I prefer some of the SNES translations (Frog Englishe speaking, "Spincut") and SNES is actually /vr/ while DS is not.

But really anon, fuck everything about Chrono Trigger on any iteration of the PlayStation. They stole my money twice, once for the PS1 version, and once again with the PSN version because I naively thought that a solid file with no moving parts would have almost no lag, but they decided to make it 100% true to their PS1 port somehow

The PS1 emulator emulates the PS1 as accuractely as possible because there are certain games that shit the bed when load times are reduced (the biggest examples are Silent Hill and Dino Crisis).

You can still turn on fast loading for PS1 games downloaded from the PSN.

You'd know this if you paid attention or maybe even explored the menus instead of raging in impotent frustration in front of your TV.

That said, SNES version is the number one recommendation from most people.

I kek'd reading your interpretations of "lag" and "solid files" though.

Are there any special settings for playing burned PS1 games?

I know the original myth was to burn with Taiyo Yuden only at 1x speed or some shit, but I was told that CDR medium has changed over the years and that for some disks/burners, it's better to do faster speeds overall?

I'm playing these on my FMCB PS2 slim using PSXLOADER. So far, P2:IS on a cheap Memorex CDR I had lying around is working fine, but I was wondering if there are better solutions.

Grabbed my Dad's PS1 last time I went around there but have been having trouble trying to burn games that will play on it.
It can play play all our old copied games (it is chipped) but I burnt a number of different games onto some cheap discs I bought and most of them wouldn't load, only Bushido Blade managed to get into the game after a while, and it was in black and white and the cut-scenes and audio would lag.
I tried burning the discs with Alcohol 120% and ImgBurn, the slowest I could do was 8x which I saw some people say was fine but not ideal. The copy of Alcohol I had even had a setting for PS1 games but that didn't help.
Does anyone have a fool proof method? Do I just need to buy a certain brand of discs? Do I really need a better CD burner?

>some cheap discs
That's probably your problem. Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden is what you want. Also, given the way modern disk drives work, slower speeds aren't always better. On top of that, some PS1s and 2s are finicky with different disk types. Try again with a different brand, different speeds (I usually just use AWS in ImgBurn), and give them another shot.

For some systems, it might take a few coasters before you get something that actually works nicely.

I'm playing some PS1 games on my PS2 with PSXLauncher.elf, and what I'm wondering is how multi-disc games work. I've been googling around, but google seems to confuse "multi-disc" with the disc swap method.

I know a lot of games let you save before switching discs, but I know there's a few that don't. I was wondering if there's anyway around that with PSXLauncher. I know there use to be big topics on this several years ago due to PSX eboots on the PSP only working with one disc at a time (before there were mutli-disc eboots in POPS 3.70), but I can't seem to find any of those anymore.

>> No.2440915

>>2440838
Figured I'd add an addendum to this since I found my answer, but the quick solution is: You don't.

The only alternative I could find for games that don't let you save before switching discs (Koudelka, for example), was to get the save from your PS1 memory card on a USB stick, convert the save into emulator playable formats, go to the next disc, and then reconvert the save back to PS1 format.

There's a simple guide here with the tools in case anyone else needs it: http://www.epforums.org/showthread.php?50796-PSX-Raw-Converter-PSX-Game-Edit

Just don't want to be that guy who goes "nvm fixed it :)" when other people search the archives for the same problem.

I'm not quite sure.

I know a lot of the games in this post here don't have save points: http://ngemu.com/threads/disc-combining-kits.118402/

Note: I wouldn't use these kits on an actual system or emulator.

Obviously, the Final Fantasies don't have that problem, but off the top of my head, MGS, Chrono Cross, the Parasite Eves, Thousand Arms all lack saving before disc switching.

>> No.2443407

I feel like a lot of PS1 games have aged really badly graphically. The ones which try to overdetail with detailed textures fall prey to affine texture deformations and overpixilization. I feel the best looking 3D games on the system emphasise clarity, high resolution and flat shading. Crash Bandicoot is a good example. Megaman Legends also looks great.
That, or they're 2D games. But then again, the Saturn outdoes the PS1 when it comes to 2D most times.

I just feel like the PS1's graphics have really faltered over the years in general.
