Why do I feel like I'm losing touch with my roots as an SNES and Genesis kid?

I look back and struggle to recall games that really spark my passion from that long ago even though I grew up on those consoles.

You don't remember which games you had fun with? Or you're having a hard time still finding fun in those old games?

It's almost like you're telling me people grow up

I guess what I'm saying is I started with gen 4 systems but when I'm going down memory lane I don't seem to go any deeper than gen 5.

Whatever I enjoyed or did during gen 4 feels alien and out of reach for me and I'm confused as to why. I can't remember the last time I played Sonic 3 & Knuckles and I know I loved that game.

I still don't really understand what you're getting at. What do you mean by 'going down memory lane'? Are you talking about thinking back on those games or actually going back and playing them? Also how old were you in gen 4?

For myself I played games in the NES era, but I didn't really LOVE them back then. They were fun and all, but I didn't really develop my passion for gaming until the Genesis. I still have fond memories of some NES games, but other than Tetris and Simon's Quest couldn't tell you the last time I played any of them. You could be in a similar position, but forward a generation.

I was about 7 during the height of generation 4 (so roughly 10-11 during gen 5; my first gen 5 console was a Saturn and it was the only gen 5 system I had until early adulthood, although I bought PS1 games to play on the PS2).

But, yeah, if I'm going to dip into my retro catalogue, I really don't delve deeper than my gen 5 library.

Maybe I ought to read some old video game magazines from the time. Try to pin down games I never tried and give them a shot (I used to do this in college but got out of it once I graduated).

I don't really see anything wrong with that. If there's not much in gen 4 and earlier that really interests you, then there just isn't. Games are supposed to be fun, no point in forcing yourself to play the ones you think you "should" if they don't appeal to you. It sounds like Gen 5 is where you developed your appreciation for games so it makes sense that it has the most nostalgia for you.

I's the pposite with me.

The more I look back, the more interested I become. I spend lots of time I shouldn't these days just playing more and more old games. And when I'm done with a game I keep finding more and more games I never played thanks to the internet (mostly /vr/) and my interest only increases.
