it's simple. the cut-off is right at 1999.
1998 was the year the dreamcast was released in Japan and 1999 in the rest of the world.

PS2, Xbox and Gamecube came way later despite belonging all to 6th gen, just like dreamcast.

I can agree with this. I'd say at least another 8-12 years should take place before sixth gen can get some legitimate retro discussion, even then it'd need longer to actually make sense being on this board. There's just too much that's different about them.

I'd even go as far as to guess if the Dreamcast had been successful enough to last longer, it wouldn't even be allowed on /vr/.

Because no matter what wikipedia says it's not a real "6th gen" console. That would mean it is in the same league as the PS2 and XBOX! It was realeased 1998 which makes it closer to the N64 and co. It is a special kind of thing having come out several YEARS before the other so called "6th gen" consloes. It lives pretty much in its own world.

There was barely any overlap between the Dreamcast's life-cycle and the 6th gen consoles' life-cycle. Most multiplatform games on the Dreamcast are ports of 5th gen games. The only games the Dreamcast shares with 6th gen consoles are ports of Dreamcast games that happened after it died.

It's not really 5th gen either. As I said it is kinda like its own thing. You cannot really compare it to the N64 and especially not to the PS1, it's leagues ahead of them, but to the PS2, XBOX, Gamecube etc neither, it is behind those.
Sega wanted to do sth that is better than the then still living consoles like the N64 before Sony would come out with the next big one. Therefore from specifications etc it's exactly between those two generations, it's like "5.5th gen"
