My friends and I were so into the first Armored Core games that I'd carry my playstation and small TV a block and a half down the street just so we could battle our ACs with a link cable. Usually we just played split screen but we did do the 2 TV thing a few times.

2 player battling in video games was nothing new, but going up against each other with carefully customized robots developed at home was a whole new experience. As I was in my mid teens and too old for pokemon I guess this was the closest thing we had to it in my peer group.

Oh man. I played the shit out of Road Rash 2, Cyborg Justice, and Combat Cars. It took my ages to get passed that big hole near the beginning of Cybog Justice. I didn't realize that the different limbs did different things, and that one of the legs gave you the ability to double jump. Me and my brother discovered this by chance while playing versus, and flipped our lids.

Four player Gauntlet Legends was the most fun I've had co-op on a console, followed by Perfect Dark. Exploring the labyrinthine levels together and finding the hidden weapons to defeat the bosses was great, and trying to survive against Dark Sims in later challenges was rough.

I had countless hours of fun playing all of these with friends and siblings.
I played a ton of PC and Playstation as well but I don't recall any particularly memorable or enjoyable multiplayer games for some reason. Diablo 2 would definitely be one, but that's barely not retro.

Kirby's Dream Course, Rock n' Roll Racing, Super Double Dragon, Super Mario Kart, Wild Guns, and Zombies Ate My Neighbors on SNES.

Future Cop L.A.P.D., Loaded, Twisted Metal 2, Vigilante 8, and WWF SmackDown! on PS1.

BattleTanx, Perfect Dark, Rush 2: Extreme Racing USA, and WWF No Mercy on the N64.
