How did you guys like the Master System/ Game Gear Sonic the Hedgehog games?

>> No.2410216

Game gear and Master System were the same thing?

>> No.2410226

>>2410216
Not 100%. The game gear was based on the Master System's architecture, but it had SLIGHTLY better tech specs than the Master System, including a bigger color palette.

>> No.2410227

>>2410201
The Master System Sonic games were ported to the Game Gear, that's why I'm connecting the two.

2 - 4
Chaos - 7

Except for the small screen, which made Sonic 2 harder than it was in the first place.

>> No.2410263

GameGear's z80 was clocked lower, but it had twice as much VRAM.

>> No.2410290

>>2410201
I liked the cart game, triplr trouble and tails adventure.

Sonic 2 was an awful experience I never want to repeat.

>> No.2410354

I like Master System Sonic 1 and 2 better than 1 & 2 on the Mega Drive.

Sonic Chaos was a let down though. As for the Game Gear games, Triple Trouble was allright, Blast was awful. Haven't played the others enough to judge.

>> No.2410358

>>2410201
I only had Mortal Kombat and some helicopter game for this. One day the batteries leaked inside and it never turned on every again.

>> No.2410432

I liked Sonic 1 and 2, Triple Trouble, and Tail's Adventure. Everything else was either meh or just plain bad

>> No.2410451

I prefer Sonic 1 on MS to Gen.

Sonic Drift 2 is the best Game Gear game.

whaaaaaaa?! there's more?

growing up my friend had the game gear and star wars, and I had the gameboy with mario. Always jealous of his color.

this makes me interested in this hand held again...

The first Sonic Drift and Tail's Skypatrol were Japanese only releases that were excluded from the picture.

Tail's Skypatrol gets shit on a lot but it's super fun. It's a really creative shmup.

Total fucking downer when I was 7 years old though.

Fuck Sonic 2 so hard though. I'm 26 and I still cant fucking work out the Sky High hang glider.

Has this ever been confirmed because it's really obtuse. Past tempo and key, it's not got a lot in it.

Don't some people seem to think that the Jungle level in Unleashed is a reworking of the S1MSGG ending theme? Because that ones definitely a coincidence

>> No.2414147

Absolutely not.
Exact same CPU speed, same amount of VRAM.
Only differences are extended CRAM depth (number of color entries remain the same), PSG channel separation with fake stereo (panning) and extended I/O (for START button and link cable communication )

I agree with these ratings 100%.
everyone tells me that Sonic 2 GG gets better, but it kind of doesn't

hated every bit of that shit as a kid, still hate it today
I wished I had Triple Trouble growing up. Now that game is fun as fuck, although not without issues (Robotnik Winter is a bad level and no one can convince me otherwise).
and original Sonic Chaos is just okay (it was the first Sonic game I ever beat) -- levels are short and easy, but it's not obnoxious at all

Sonic 1 GG/SMS is surprisingly great. It's a bit weird as a Sonic game, though. But as a platformer in general, it's very good.

>>2410254
doing the first boss on the GG was awful
when I discovered emulation and found out about the SMS version, I was so glad
but then I realized that the game is still kind of poor even though the increased screen size helps tremendously

>>2410216
pretty much (there is a converter that lets you play most SMS games on a GG)
>>2414147 lists all the differences (like, all of them)

Otherwise, the hardware is identical.
neat facts: GG has a wider color gamut than the SMS and Genesis (4096 displayable colors on the GG, 64 available on SMS, 512 available on the Genesis)

>>2411902
>I always wondered why there was a Sonic Drift 2 but I never heard of a first one.
honestly, I just thought Sega liked putting 2 after things

>After Burner 2, Galaxy Force 2, Sonic Drift 2...
It seemed to fit.
actually, I thought the same thing about Street Fighter 2 for years, had no idea there was a Street Fighter 1

>> No.2414937

Ratings guy here.

Yeah, Sonic 2 if anything starts average, drops to rock bottom with Sky High and then kind of flickers between awful and below average. It never gets better. Unless you let Tails die.

I wish I grew up with TT as well. I didn't really play it through until a few years ago. Again, like you said, not without problems but you've got to admire it's size and scope. 10 for ambition.

Couldn't agree more on the OKness of Chaos. Not particularly memorable. In no way bad. Apart from those rocket shoes.

1 MS will always be my favourite of the 8 Bit Era. I don't really have a lot bad to say about it.

What I didn't mention was Blast but what is there to say about it other than it's a steamer?

The strangest of the bunch is Labyrinth. I havent spent loads of time with it but I remember that it isn't as bad as you'd think but at the same time, not what you'd want at all in a Sonic game.

I couldn't make it far at all in the Tails games. Maybe they're good? I dunno. Just not for me

>> No.2414956

One beaten plenty of hard games from Ghosts 'n Goblins to Alien Soldier and the first boss of Sonic 2 GG trumps them all in difficulty.

In the beginning intro, Tails is captured by Dr Eggman. If you don't get all the Chaos Emeralds the ending cutscene is Sonic, run back on his own through the night with it panning up at the end to Tails' face in the stars.

Age old trope that just implies that you couldn't save him and he's fucking dead.

Anyone know which region is this version of Sonic 1? I'm from south america and got this many years ago, and I think it might be the european version, but not sure.
This is also my favorite cover on any Sonic game.

Anyway, Sonic 1 on GG is pretty good, surprisingly challenging too.
Sonic 2 is maybe a bit too challenging, right from the get go you have to fight that annoying centipede boss, fuck that shit, I remember the frustration as a kid, then when you get past it, you're thrown into a level with strange flying mechanics and confusing level design, never got further than that, I don't think.
Sonic Chaos was pretty good, it was my first GG game and loved it.
Sonic Blast is a disaster.

Tail's SkyPatrol is pretty good.
