>"adult" humor and +17 rating alienating the core N64 audience reducing sales
>same horrible voice actor for ALL of the male roles

Why? It was an alright game but why did Rare want to get away from their cute image? What did they want to prove?
I was extremely hyped for 12 tales then they pull this.

They wanted to sell you Banjo Kazooie one more time without people realizing it was the same game

they wanted to do something original. the "Nintendo only releases kid games" attitude was at it's peak than. if they would have just released another "normal" 3-d action/collectathon BFD wouldn't have received anywhere close to the amount of attention it received.

Ironically, Nintendo distanced itself from CBF (never appeared in Nintendo Power) and outright rejecting publishing it in Europe.

The game built upon Mario 64 and Banjo's success by adding hilarious content and nods to pop-culture. GTA is another game that does this and look at how popular the franchise is.

Conker's Big Reunion, however... well, shit.

CBFD's gameplay was actually pretty different to Banjo Kazooie, though.

>> No.2408813

Even without the adult humor, it was a frustratingly annoying game.

It was just hard, and not the kind of hard you feel rewarded for finishing, it was just annoying. Especially the war segment.

Some sections were. But the multiplayer modes with friends was were the game truly shined. You didn't have to change cartridges to race, shoot, conquer, or flee. It felt like you had every game mode available.

They realized it halfway through making Twelve Tales, that they are just doing another Banjo / DK64 game and said fuck that, we need to make something more original.

And it worked as far as popularity went - it did not sell well because the N64 was the absolute worst target for such a game. If they got the game with similar open-end worlds and same humour on the Playstation, it would've sold millions.

>> No.2408861

It didn't sell well cuz it was knr of the games at the end of 64s life. The game is top notch by my standards. Every scene is a reference to something going on at the time. I can still remember the first time I beat the shit monster. Getting to the Matrix level. It was a game ahead of its time. So glad Rare gambled to release this one. Where's our Conquer amibo

It was part of the original Xbox lineup. Game didn't sell so well. They cut out a few scenes that were in the N64 version too

The xbox version was 1) on another failed console, and 2) got notoriety for being censored worse than the N64 version, despite the claim that it was uncensored.

The first Xbox was sold at a giant loss and the PS2 sold like 5x as many units.

It was not successful by any measure, other than building enough hype to make Microsoft a major player in the console industry with the success of the x360.

I thought that the xbox console sold at a loss from day 1, but the money was recouped from game sales, which is what made it profitable...

The N64 was virtually already dead when this game came out.
>same horrible voice actor for ALL of the male roles
The game was entirely voiced by the people that actually made the game, I actually think that's pretty cool. I actually think Seavor is perfect as Conker. But I think the real reason was they were trying to copy South Park by having lots of characters all voiced by a skeleton crew.

>Why? It was an alright game but why did Rare want to get away from their cute image? What did they want to prove?
They were just bored of being spun off to make yet another platformer. I think Nintendo probably quietly disapproved of Rare making so many platform games when Nintendo already made an almost perfect one as a launch title. Rare's resources would have been better spent on making games that the N64 lacked, like RPGs or fighting games or hell even 2D games.

>I was extremely hyped for 12 tales then they pull this.
Why? It still has some merits. It probably has 5th gen's best graphics.

Nintendo is the only company never to sell its hardware at a loss at release. Everyone else sells it at what the consumer will pay, expects to get paid on licensing, and hopes the price to manufacture will come down soon. This is why you see different boards in the same console over time. Especially notable in the 360, where savvy customers attempted to replace their RRoD'd units with Jasper chipset models.

Well aren't you just full of shit, it was both mentioned (though censored heavily) in Nintendo power AND published in Europe.

Nintendo did nothing more than giving their OK to publish it on their system. Rare thad to publish it themselves and in Europe it was published too, yes- but it was published by THQ.

n64 was pretty much dead by the time BFD was released. if it would have came out 2 or 3 years earlier it would have found a larger audience.
