What was up with the limited number of colours for sprites on the ngpc? Is it because the system's hardware wasn't properly upgraded between the black and white and colour versions?

It had the power of a marginally sophisticated pocket watch, what did you suspect?

Looks like 2bit per pixel.
The background might also be 2bit, I don't know if any 8x8 section exceeds 4 colors

3 colors + transparency per sprite
isnt that the same as an nes?

I don't know about the tech aspects but I was always under the impression the ngp games played a lot better than on gbc.
More fluid, I don't know.

NGPC is probably my favorite handheld. Sold mine but had so much fun with it as a kid. Had a small library, but the 10 or so games I had were fantastic. I think it had a lot to do with the fluidity of the game that another anon pointed out.

>> No.2395105

I think they could do 4 colors per sprite and I know this from playing the Sonic game, but the fighting games had so many characters so they probably had to tone it down.

>> No.2395354

looks like the white skin in kof was a choice not a fault, remember its a reflective type display so screenshot colors looks different to the real thing

>> No.2395371

>>2395105

Sonic probably did the same trick as the NES Mega Man games - two or more separate sprites of 3 colors, each with their own palette.

Another trick is to use the background to display a moving object instead of the sprite - again, Mega Man did this will most minibosses. You can usually tell when a game does this because it'll have a simple black background.

>> No.2395395

>>2395354
They also had to have an alternate palette for player 2 and keep it backwards compatible with the black and white console model.

Is that true?

>> No.2396062

>>2395653
i had a ngpc for a while and i can honestly say 40 hours sounds like even less than you should get. i've gamed like crazy on them for weeks.

i have a disc full of NGPC roms. i think it should be every game ever released including a handful of english translated games. can't get all of them to work with the emulator that came with it. evolution for example won't work pass the first dungeon. biomotor is beatable but some of the colors are fucked up. didn't really bother trying out all the roms though beause moonrunes. there even seems to be some kinda house sim where you raise a little grill??

what's the best emulator for NGPC?

Right now Mednafen or Retroarch's port of their NGPC core are probably the best for playing, everything else except MESS has been dead for years

MESS is also a good option (and has a good debugger if that's useful to you) but there are some noticeable issues with the sound emulation; for an example, compare how Geese's theme song in SNK vs Capcom sounds in Mednafen/Retroarch vs MESS and notice how some instruments are conspicuously absent in MESS

Right now I don't think any current emulators support 2-player which is a shame; the only one I saw that claims to (haven't tested to confirm) is Koyote which is extremely dated

>> No.2397390

>>2397249
retroarch is bloated as fuck. stop shilling that shit already! anyone who reccommends retroarch should insta-banned!

mednafen just uses an old buggy version of neopop. why the fuck is that good?

and apparently my version of koyote is newer than the last version of neopop, but more unstable.

can't find shit on mess's website though. looks like they're trying to make MESS do too much like MAME.

That's exactly what it does.

>>2394943
White has higher contrast, which makes things pop more on the non-backlit screen.

>>2394906
NGPC's got a much better CPU and has a separate Z80 CPU for sound (the GBC runs everything on its one slow not-quite-a-Z80).
It's in this middling sort of power-class between an 8-bit home console and a 16-bit home console in terms of CPU power.

It's a significantly better machine than the GBC, but significantly weaker than the GBA.

>>2394907
which isn't so much to do with power as it is to do with quality of game design
I'm still amazed at how much better the NGPC KOF games are than the GBA ones.

SNK really fucking tried with the NGPC. God, now this is a machine that didn't deserve to fail.

Gals Fighter is incredible and probably the best pre-PSP handheld fighter around even if it goes heavy on Marvel levels of cheese, it's a shame there's currently no good way to netplay it in emulator

KOF R2 is good but still suffers from some finicky inputs that were improved a bit in MOTM and finally solved in Gals (shorthopping for example is a lot easier to do consistently on demand in Gals), Samsho on NGPC feels "okay" (didn't really grab me though) but I'm not sure why there's so much praise for NGPC Last Blade when it frankly feels like a huge step back from the games that preceded it

Dark Arms for sure. It's a gun-centered action rpg with some fucking amazing sprite work. My other suggestion would be Biomotor Unitron, it's a great little pokemon ripoff, but instead of pokemon you upgrading armor on a robot.

But if you're looking for some action get Metal Slug second mission or sonic pocket adventures

Holding off on Biomotor because it's a tad more expensive than most other games. Same goes for MoTM because last I recall it's like $25.

All sprites in Fatal Fury First Contact have tan skin too.
