There are so many traditional Bomberman games, and the differences between them are so subtle. What would you consider to be "the best" of bomberman?

>> No.2393515

>>2393509
BM64 and 2nd Attack! right after.

>> No.2393520

Not technically retro, but Bomberman DS is probably the best one objectively. Just one cart will allow up to eight people to play at once, and you can still wreck your friend's shit from the sidelines after you die. It uses both screens pretty smartly too.

64, Super 5. 94, or Saturn.
I can't really choose.

Probably Bomberman 64. I haven't played it since I was a kid, but I keep hearing that it's still pretty good and has a a bigger focus on single-player.

Saturn Bomberman

>> No.2393562

Saturn Bomberman has the best multiplayer by far. The story is also very entertaining (not that you play Bomberman for the story).

Mega Bomberman > Saturn Bomberman > Bomberman 64.

64 is kind of a different beast than the 2d ones. I honestly think Bomberman 64 was better with friends who owned the game because of the battle mode and character customization was more fun than the others. As far as 1Player mode its more like an adventure game.

Isn't Mega Bomberman just a shittier port of Bomberman '94?

Bomberman '94 for the single player mode. Nothing beats Saturn Bomberman for the 10 player madness though. That was fun as hell.

>> No.2393771

I had the one for the snes and always really enjoyed it.

Super Bomberman 3 was my favorite.

...or was it 4? The one with the penalty kick minigame.

If you have no friends then you should probably not be looking into the Bomberman series.

>> No.2394604

I like Super Bomberman for its inconsistent level design and difficulty spikes. It's weird, feels like a fan mod, but it's still an enjoyable experience if you're used to other Bomberman games, if not just for the shit and giggles.

Super 3, 4 and Saturn Bomberman for a more polished experience.

Anyway, have anyone here finished Super Bomberman 3 via password? Beating the last level without power-ups seems insane, that's some real hardcore shit.

>> No.2394615

Super Bomberman 2, probably 'cause nostalgia, that multitap SNES had some friends coming over before going out, never going out and suddenly birds started to chirp again outside.
That didn't stop us from playing though.

>> No.2394691

Super 5 definitely

What about Bomberman hero? My friend used to have it, and I used to play it when I went to his house. From what I remember, seemed like a fun platformer

>> No.2394839

What was the max number of players possible in Saturn Bomberman? I remember one of the maps being unbelievably gigantic and allowing more than 8.

>> No.2394845

This is something that is pretty bizarre to me. You look at release lists and you see so many bomberman games. SNES and Game Boy had a dozen Bombermans alone IIRC, and there's more where that came from on PCE, N64, Playstation, Saturn, etc.

What I want to know is, how did people keep on buying Bomberman games to support this activity? Did people really buy all of the Super Bomberman games? I know I bought Hero and Second Attack as a kid, and Bomberman DS for portable multiplayer, but after that had difficulty seeing any reason to buy one.

im fond of the bomberman 2 custom battle on ds but alas, not retro
bomberman 1 on snes has a long ass invincibility time that can be exploited
bomberman 2-3-4 are pretty even in quality with 4 having the most fun battle mode due to being able to use the bosses skills
bomberman 5 was a little weird, levels were done on a random generator, there are over a 100 of them. there's an interesting battle mode where you can buy items and customize your character

cont.
I think super bomberman 3 was the most popular as that was the last game to come to the US and the only that got ported to turbo grafx and sega genesis
it's also got some of the most interesting level design, in order to proceed you need to destroy these red lamp things, you interact with a lot of objects and you move into subareas.
i think it's the one that got the most solid adventure mode coop right there

if you game over you are taken to world select screen
the 4th world before the last one gives you a heart and a remote control item, it's a better idea to start there and move to the final boss

But that's wrong. Bomberman 94 for the PC-Engine came first which was then ported (badly) to the Genesis/Mega Drive as Mega Bomberman. Super 3 came 2 years after 94, and could be considered an unofficial sequel of 94, if anything.

Saturn Bomberman, 2nd Attack or Bomberman '94/Mega.

Like others, I'll have to recommend the three Bomberman games on N64 as standout titles.

Keep in mind most people saying to play Bomberman 64 2 are talking about Bomberman 64: The Second Attack, not the Japan exclusive Bomberman 64 2, which I believe was just a puzzle game similar to Tetris Attack or something.

However, even those three games are all well worth playing, they aren't really representative of the Bomberman franchise. Second Attack probably does the best job at shifting classic bomberman gameplay into a 3D adventure environment but even that is quite different from classic Bomberman.

I don't know enough about all of the grid based Bombermans to tell you which of the classics is the best. I will however recommend Bomberman 2 for the DS. It has a customization aspect which, while incredibly simple, is surprisingly deep and adds a lot to replayability and to being able to complete various challenges by swapping out equipment. Out of the grid based Bomberman games I've played, this one is by far the best for singleplayer.

Beyond that, all I have to say is that if you pick up The Second Attack, you should probably have beaten the first Bomberman 64 beforehand. Also The Second Attack has imo the best multiplayer of the franchise even if it isn't the most representative, none of the other Bomberman games I've played come close to the insanity of TSA multiplayer.

nevermind, I already looked up Wario's Woods and it turns out it's basically a Wario Tetris game. You bomb blocks away basically

It's just such a cheap move, y'know?
they used the very same title font on the cover with the bombs in the "O" for both of these games. that's why I thought it was the same game just re-named but that's wrong.
